The Official UCB Fall of 2014 Decisions Thread

So what do we do from the 24th to the 28th? The 8th is when classes actually start, right?

Hey guys, how do you check if they’ve received your IGETC certification? Is it under “Official Records/Documents”?

@moriartee‌ Settle in, meet your roommates, meet your floor. Go out to the store to get all those things you forgot (the Wada bathrooms don’t come with hand soap!? we need a dish drying rack!). And there’ll be a gazillion welcome week events, some orientations, you can go hang out at calapalooza if you’re really bored. Basically it’s an adjustment period before your classes begin.

I’m a little confused about Phase 2. Could we actually begin registering for Phase 2 on its first day or do we have some sort of appointment date/time to register?

@failure622 Have you ever been on a wait list for a class? If so, how is it like? Is there a good chance to get into a class from the wait list?

@oongaboonga‌
Phase 2 has a schedule, just like Phase 1. I think dates are posted on Bearfacts or Telebears, forget which one. During the adjustment period (after phase 2) it becomes free-for-all.

I’ve been waitlisted a couple times, but always for CS classes. Most are pretty good at expanding to let everyone into the class, others will explicitly say that anyone after some number on the wait list should give up now. As a rule of thumb, ~10% of the class will drop and let in waitlisters, but that might be a CoE thing. :stuck_out_tongue: Sometimes you can also get an advantage in a wait list situation by picking unpopular sections… the ones with tiny wait lists or at really weird times (8am or after 5pm) since those are considered less desirable. Remember that if a class has sections, it’s typically the section wait list that matters, not the overall one.

@failure622 are you a senior?

@hairlesscow‌ I exist in a semi-graduated state right now, I transferred two years ago but I’m sticking around one last summer so I can TA. :slight_smile: This place really helped me when I was transferring, so I like to stick around and answer questions when I can.

@failure622 How do we know our wait list number for a discussion section? Telebears only let us know our wait list number for the lecture.

@oongaboonga‌ You don’t. Isn’t telebears fun? But being on a shorter waitlist (when you sign up, pick a small-ish wait list) works in your favor, and sometimes you can swap to a newly added section (with open seats and no wait list) to jump past students who are waiting on full sections.

Personally my theory was always just hope for the best, and have a plan B in case the wait list thing doesn’t work out.

@failure622 If we are registered for a class, would switching the discussion section be easy ie. landing available seats not the wait list in the section?

tele bears are not letting me get on the wait list for any of the classes while I can enroll into open classes… anyone else having the same problem? I have only 5 unit enrolled so I know it’s not a unit or pre-requisite problem…when I try to get on the wait list it says “transaction cancelled.” :/

do you guys know the exact date when we are finally going to know who our roommates are and all the details about move in day? I spoke with someone that works in the units and she said late july or early august, but I’m not sure when exactly… some people have said that certain ppl move in a day before other ppl, it is just very confusing haha.

@ucastell‌ I checked my old housing emails, they emailed that roommate info was on the housing portal on 8/5 (last year) and 8/3 (two years ago). It’s probably not set in stone, and it could be spread over a couple days… just be patient.

For the most part, people move in on the same day. Triples move in the day before doubles, and some students will arrive late, but move in day will be crazy and full of people.

Good news is that i found a parking spot 0.3 miles from Martinez. :smiley:
So, when do we find out how much we owe Cal? I know we have to pay our first bill by August 15th but it’s still showing as $0.00 for me.

@failure622 did you ever use Bearwalk? The place I’m parking at is pretty close but I have to pass People’s Park to get there. I’m thinking I might always need BearWalk to go back to my apartment at night

@moriartee I was always too lazy to use it. I usually walked back with a group if it was late, and I always stayed to routes I knew/well lit places. Unless you’re walking around after midnight, there tends to be a lot of people out and about, so it feels safer. I’d recommend finding a path that doesn’t go right next to/through people’s park if you’re walking in the dark… just a block east/west is enough to avoid it.

But the Bearwalk service is definitely there if you want to use it.

@failure622 well, the apartment building where I’m renting my parking spot is 2533 Hilegass, and google maps says the shortest walk would be next to People’s Park. Idk how Bearwalk works - would they yell at me if I only need to walk for 0.3 miles? :p

@failure622‌, thank you! :slight_smile: do you know of any cool programs designed for MCB majors at Berkeley? I’m thinking about volunteering but I don’t know where, or if I should just wait until Spring? What do you recommend being my first semester at Cal?

So do all the transcripts required from myberkeleyapp disappear after they have been approved? Just checked mine, and everything is gone. I thought they were supposed to be “received-final”?

@hairlesscow I was worried because mine did the same thing, but I think it just means that everything is in check!

@ucastell‌ I don’t know of anything specifically for MCB (I’m EECS). But during welcome week there should be a day when all the clubs/organizations are on sproul, and some of the departments host their own specific club fairs as well (CoE and EECS each had one). So, try and find out when those are if you’re looking for things to get involved in or wondering what’s out there. Apart from the usual “know your limits” speech, getting involved is a good thing, it’ll help you make friends and it should be fun. :)

@moriartee‌ No idea, at that point I’d probably just stick to the unit2 side of the sidewalk and call it good, otherwise you’ll be stuck waiting forever for someone to walk with you for 3 minutes.
