***The official University of Michigan Chances Thread:***

@yesyesno Your GPA is a bit below admiasion average while your ACT is at admission average. So you are right among average applicants. The OOS admission rate is 20% this year. So it would be a low reach for you.

@12temps12 @mjr2013 The mid 50 ACT for CoE has been 31-34 in the last couple years and is likely higher this year. The admission average is 33 this year. ACT 29 is NOT within their “published average” and it would make you very unlikely to be admitted. I do know one got admitted with ACT 29 a couple years ago who is a girl from in state with near 4.0 GPA and legacy.

@billcsho it would be different in a good way or a bad way? And what’s the basis of your statement?

[ *] College: Kinesiology
[ *] ACT: 32 composite (E33, M28, R36, S32)
[ *] UM unweighted GPA: 3.93
[ *] Rank:Top 10% (class of 359)
[ *] Other stats: Course Load 4AP overall (3 History, 4 Lang, other in progress),
2 concurrent college classes this semester, 2 in spring (cannot figure if this helps or hinders?)
[ *] Subjective (ECs, special circumstances, etc): NHS (4 years) w/volunteers hours, XC 4 years, JV captain, Soccer 2 years, Spanish club, Science Fair winner 9/10. Worked ~10 hours week school year and ~25 hour week summer since spring of sophomore year
[ *] Essays: 3 of the 4 express specific match to sports throughout life, Why Mich includes references specific to Sport Mgt program AT Mich and how it’s a perfect match
[ *] Teacher Recs: excellent, had her in 8th and again for senior AP Lit
[ *] Counselor Rec:generic, but should be very good (head of dept, but new counselor for him this year)
[ *] Hook (legacy, recruited athlete, etc.): None
[ *] State or Country:OOS
[ *] School Type: Public
[ *] Ethnicity: White
[ *] Gender:Male
[ *] major strength/weakness: S: ACT score above Kinesiology average, essays very good and specific, ability to manage work. W: OOS, may think safety app, plus 4AP and 4 concurrent (since I can’t get a read on concurrent enrollment)
[ *] Other Factors/questions: Visited in June 2015, applied EA

Anxiously awaiting to hear about my son:
Out of state, but would be 4th generation to attend UM
Attended Interlochen Arts Camp 6 years
Main EC: Piano, Competitive Chess Player (since grade 3), LAX Varsity Letterman (3 years), Volunteer on overseas medical missions for 4 years
Honors: NHS, Chosen for Economics For Leaders (UT,Ausin), HOBY Leasership, AP Diploma With Distinction
ACT: Composite 32 (Best M 35, Sci 35, reading, 34, Eng- 33)
GPA: Unweighted 3.8, Weighted 4.25
Will graduate with 9 AP classes, HS is public, but ranked #1 in our state.
Applying to Engineering
Thoughts?

@MrGupta They will put less weight on the reading/englush scores for international students, howver, they will compare you with other applicants from the same country. So it is difficult to chance based solely on GPA and test scores.
@mom2ljr Hopefully the multiple legacy would help. Otherwise, his test score and GPA right below admission average would hurt his chance. I know an in state student with slightly higher GPA and ACT from a local feeder school got rejected last year. His EC and course rigor were not as good as your son though.

@billcsho It has gotten more selective in recent years as far as ACT goes, but I definitely disagree with the notion that an ACT of 29 makes one “very unlikely” to be admitted. UM published 30-34 as the middle 50th percentile for those admitted for fall of 2015, so you are correct that it is outside their official published average, but not by much.

Princeton Review has their middle 50th percentile at 29-33. College Board has 30% of admitted students with ACT scores of 24-29 (29% of which are most likely 28 and 29)… 29 isn’t ideal but it definitely isn’t a deal breaker.

@mjr2013 Obviously Princeton Review’s data is outdated. The mid 50 of 29-33 was from 2 years ago. More important, you are quoting stat for UMich overall, not the CoE which @12temps12 is asking about. ACT 29 has been out of the mid 50 of CoE for a long time. What matter is the latest stat for CoE from official source. Note that you used the term “published average”. Mid 50 is not average while the middle of the mid 50 is (it is median precisely). ACT 29 is below the 25th percentile and miles away from average (which is 32 for UMich overall and 33 for CoE).

@billcsho It is outdated, I credit UM’s site much more than PR or anywhere else, and in fairness I did not take the CoE’s increased difficulty into account in my OP to 12temps… I already admitted that I was wrong about the published average.

With that said, I still do not think it’s fair to say that 12temps, or anyone with a 29 is automatically “highly unlikely” to get accepted. 12temps is from an underrepresented state with a 3.96 GPA and great ECs. The 29 is not ideal, but it’s not a deal breaker.

Montana is underrepresented, but it is not having no better student. “Highly unlikely” does not automatic for anything. It is just showing the low possibility. It is not a deal breaker as I have already mentioned an in state female student with legacy did get it with ACT 29.

@billcsho will you chance my son in post #2044 above please? Thank you

@Mom1997Kid All I know is Kinesiology has lower admission stat than UMich overall, but I don’t know their admission rate. Your son’s stat is at or slightly above the admission stat of UMich overall so it should be way above average for Kinesiology. Nevertheless, the chance would still depend on the admission rate.

Thanks for the feedback @billcsho!

@wert2222 Your SAT is rather weak for UMich while your GPA is near admission average. It would be a reach for you from OOS.

@whej123 You are within the range of admitted students, however, it is hard to chance international students. Expect the admission rate to be in the teens for CoE from OOS/international.
