***The official University of Michigan Chances Thread:***

@delstack in-state you’re very likely. OOS, you’re similar to a large quantity of applicants. Your chances are alright, but you want to make sure you nail the application and make them feel they need YOU.

Thank you. I appreciate the insight.

@Kelsey01

[ *] College (LSA, engineering, etc.): LSA
[ *] SAT: 1400
[ *] SAT IIs (if sent):not taken yet
[ *] ACT: N/A
[ *] UM unweighted GPA: 3.4 ( i know it’s very low but this is mainly because of my freshman year when I did not try at all, so big improvement since then)
[ *] Rank: top 10% ( not sure, school doesn’t give out that information
[ *] AP: Lang (5), Psychology (4), Seminar (4), Spanish lang (4)

[ *) Location/Person:
[ *] State or Country: Vermont (international student, from Bermuda)

[ *] Other Factors/questions: Can you guys chance me? I know my GPA is definitely subpar but I’m hoping that it won’t completely wreck my chances.

@Kelsey01 Nothing really stands out as a red flag on your application, but take my words with a grain of salt. I’m not an admissions officer and just a recent alum lol. I used to review applications for admissions to a high school summer camp at U of M, but that’s completely different from actual admissions. You might want to work on that science section and take the ACT again if there is a bit more time, but you should take it again ONLY if you feel absolutely confident that you can do better. Nothing wrong with trying to improve at all, but if your science/math grades at school are strong (like if you took honors/AP Chem, Bio, etc), Michigan might be understanding of that one bad subscore. Everyone has an off day at the office, and the ACT is just one of the many things they look at when they pick applicants. Although I’m from out of state, I do recall most of the kids from in-state at Michigan being in the top 10% of their class, so you do fit the bill there. You didn’t just study, and did lots of volunteering, had a job, displayed leadership (or whatever they call it) and what not, so you do check all the boxes that are required for admissions at Michigan. Essays and teacher recommendations are subjective and a complete mystery in and of itself, so… I can’t really give you much there.

Also, that legacy definitely helps when it comes to admissions. I don’t exactly know how it works, but Michigan does look upon favorably at children of alumni. It also doesn’t hurt if your parents donated to Michigan consistently over the years, but if they didn’t it won’t count against you. As for scholarships, their need-based grant package is mediocre at best, so applying to outside scholarships would be great. Michigan also has a massive endowment fund from rich/private donors, and if you apply early, you are automatically eligible for those without doing anything else to your application. Michigan sorts out the Early Acceptance students and dishes out scholarships to those people, but these scholarships are super hard to get, and most of them are for only a few thousand dollars, so don’t bank on it.

As for your pre-med ambitions, Michigan doesn’t really consider your interested field when it comes to reviewing your application. That 28 science you have as a potential pre-med student looks exactly the same as that 28 a potential pre-law student has as long as both of you applied to LS&A. Plus, you enter Michigan without a declared major, and can pretty much study whatever you want, however you want. They wipe the slate clean when you come in, so don’t feel like you’re under any additional pressure because you want to go into medicine. You’ll have plenty of time to worry about med school once you get into college.

Early Action 2021

[ *] College (LSA, engineering, etc.): Engineering
[ *] SAT: 1320 (ACT equivalent is 28)
[ *] SAT IIs (if sent): 1370 (ACT equivalent is a 29)
[ *] ACT: Will be taking the ACT for the first time in September
[ *] UM unweighted GPA: 3.65
[ *] Rank: dchool does not report
[ *] Other stats: 3.9 weighted GPA, 6 IB classes per semester for junior year (& upcoming senior year). 6 honors classes per semester, every semester in 9th and 10th grade .
[ *] Subjective (ECs, special circumstances, etc):

[ *] State or Country: Michigan
[ *] School Type: 4 year public high school
    [ *] Ethnicity: Asian (Indian)
    [ *] Gender: M
[ *] Major strength/weakness: Really low GPA because I attended the International Academy of Macomb where you must take 6 honors classes per semester for the first 2 years and 6 IB classes per semester the last two years
[ *] Other Factors/questions: Attending this high school also could be a positive because it was ranked the second best high school in Michigan and the 12th best HS in the nation by USNews (hopefully this somewhat makes up for my extremely low GPA)

I know it’s not looking good for me as both my GPA and ACT are below average and that makes it nearly impossible to get in; however, I’m hoping to gauge if my high school’s prestige and my large load of IB/honors classes will help me and to what extent. Thank you!

I’ll be applying early action for 2021 (: I’m not stressed tho haha
