[*] School type: public
[ *] College: Kinesiology
[ *] SAT: 1270
[ *] ACT: 26, not sending
[ *] UM unweighted GPA: 3.97 (4.008 W)
[ *] Rank: 40 of 507
[ *] Other stats: 4 AP’s
[ *] Subjective (ECs, special circumstances, etc): Creator and manager of a sports business that is thriving (6 million YouTube views, 32,000 subscribers) Also- Varsity basketball, JV baseball, NHS, freshmen mentoring program.
[ *] Essays: Pretty good- Common App essay was about my sport business (intended major is Sport Management)
[ *] Teacher Recs: Solid
[ *] Counselor Rec: Decent
[ *] State or Country: Michigan
[ *] School Type: Large public school
[ *] Ethnicity: White
[ *] Gender: M
[ *] major strength/weakness: weakness- SAT could be better, but I know that Kinesiology’s middle 50% SAT is slightly lower than the other schools within UM. Strengths- GPA, ECs
[ *] College (LSA, engineering, etc.): Ross
[ *] SAT: 2180 (800 CR, 700 Math, 680 Writing)
[ *] SAT IIs (if sent): 620 literature
[ *] ACT: 33 twice
[ *] UM unweighted GPA: Probably around 3.6 (I couldn’t find it on my school transcript); 3.914 Weighted
[ *] Rank: School does not rank.
[ *] Other stats:
[ *] Subjective (ECs, special circumstances, etc): Did a history club all 4 years (historian position senior year), Red cross club 10th/11th grade, Latin honors society 11th grade, English honors society 11th grade, and got a silver medal on the National Classical Etymology Exam in 11th grade. I also have around 130 volunteer hours. Some other ECs are SCUBA diving, working on my motorcycle, photography, and I played club soccer for Princeton FC for 2 years.
[ *] Essays: Pretty good: I wrote my Common App essay about scuba dicing.
[ *] Teacher Recs: Pretty standard; nothing special.
[ *] Counselor Rec: Same as my teacher recs; nothing special.
[ *] Hook (legacy, recruited athlete, etc.): None
[ *] State or Country: New Jersey
[ *] School Type: Public School (last year 85 applied, 21 were admitted, and 4 enrolled)
[ *] Ethnicity: Indian
[ *] Gender: Male
[ *] major strength/weakness: My SAT, ACT, and GPA could be better. I also could’ve done more ECs. I just feel like my application isn’t strong enough to justify accepting an out-of-state kid. However, I do have some unique ECs like scuba diving and my motorcycle.
Just an observation from the other side of the application decision. Our daughter was FINALLY accepted to the College of Kinesiology last year after applying early action and being deferred for four months before hearing her decision. She was an extremely strong applicant with great ACT scores (33) and a committed vision to attend UMICH (which is where she is as I type). But, it was not an easy process. UMICH has become very concerned with its yield and has been scrutinizing applicants (with an indiscernible process other than if you have really strong scores you likely will have to wait), to determine whether if offered admission they will accept. As a result, some of the top early action candidates are deferred. I think they want to see the applicants’ staying power and determination. There are many trials that await you. If you are using UMICH as a safety school, don’t count on acceptance. If you truly wish to attend UMICH, be prepared (as Bette Davis said) “for a bumpy ride.” Our daughter found out about her acceptance in April after walking in the door from a 13 hour car ride back from University of Wisconsin, a close second choice. BTW, that is a totally awesome place as well : )
Will appreciate any feedback.
[ *] College (LSA, engineering, etc.):LSA for mathematics

[ *] State or Country:CA
[ *] School Type:Community College

[ *] major strength/weakness: meh, with my barely sub-par stats U of M is definitely out of reach for me, but I think I can whip up some good essay.
[ *] Other Factors/questions:I’m a out of state transfer applicant with over 60 college credits. I think they will disregard my high school stats because I’m considered a junior applicant.

Also, I thought that Michigan super scored SATs?
@lancetjay My son is a freshman in the School of Kinesiology and my advice is get your ACT to 30 as a buffer. We are also from Kalamazoo and in his class no one was admitted below a 30 that I know of. Everything else looks great on your app. I wish you the best, my son has really enjoyed the first part of the school year. He is an avid soccer player too and is doing intramural with guys from the area here and they are all having a blast.
@ProudDad26 I’m glad your daughter made it! I remember talking to you last December when the EA decisions were out. She sounded very qualified. My son only has one Kinesiology class this fall but couldn’t be happier with his choice. We go pick him up in a few hours for their fall break, he hasn’t been home since he left:)

Would applying Early Action increase my chances? I have the common app done, but I’m not sure whether I should wait to send my Senior year 1st quarter grades or not. Rate my chances?
@GoBlue2020 all is good with our daughter. She is loving Kinesiology and has become so involved at the school. Glad to hear that your son is doing well, also! No visits home until Thanksgiving : ) But, we’ve already been to two Big House games. Go Blue!!!

Hi guys…trying to help relieve some stress!! All these are subjective opinions, so take it with a grain of salt
@DurocMa05 It’s kinda hard to guess from the info you have. The complete absence of ECs will hurt you a lot…admissions wants to see genuine and unique passions from applicants. I think you’ll get rejected if you don’t show interest in your essays towards attending or other things you are involved in. It’s a toss-up with what you gave though so hmm
@sossomeonehelp I think applying to Engineering as a female should give you a tiny boost, but your stats are quite below average for CoE, especially for being OOS. I think you could have an okay shot if your recs and essays are as good as you say. It’s pretty hard to tell though, but I think you’ll get deferred and probably rejected because of your stats unless your ECs are actually more amazing than what you suggest.
@Umichhopeful1999 Very vague…I mean your ACT is okay for LSA but you’re OOS so that will hurt. Don’t seem very passionate too or involved in ECs. If you wrote your essays very well and your recs were good, you might have a chance. GPA is kinda lackluster.
@jd8171998 Your ECs look great, along with the essays/rec. GPA fits and ACT, but might sting a bit bc you’re OOS. I think you’ll get accepted because you seem very genuinely interested!!
@MIT2017LOL Uhh your stats are outstanding (seems like you know LOL). However, basing how you posted here because you got deferred from Cornell and don’t bother to copy and paste those stats over to this thread (which gives the impression that UMich is a safety for you), I feel like your essays might have showed lack of interest in actually attending UMich, which they frown upon greatly because they want to keep their yield rates high. Interest=accepted, noninterest=deferral/rejection.
Make sure you sent a letter of interest/semester grades/accomplishments in if you actually want to go to UMich. You seem very salty (which may be warranted, but I’m not you so I can’t say), but you should be careful about how you portray yourself. I know its hard being an ORM but humility goes a long way! I hope things turn out okay for you.
[ *] College (LSA, engineering, etc.): LSA
[ *] SAT: Didn’t send
[ *] SAT IIs (if sent): none
[ *] ACT: 33
[ *] UM unweighted GPA: my school does not give us that information, but unweighted, I would guess around 3.7-3.8?
[ *] Rank: school doesn’t rank
[ *] Awards: High honor roll(90+ GPA) (11th-12th grades) & Honor roll(85+ GPA) (10th grade)
“Spotlight scholar” for AP Lang (English)
Current Courses: I took mostly honors Freshman and Sophomore year, one AP and one honor 11th grade
AP Score: 4 AP Lang
Senior course load: AP Lit, AP Spanish Lit, AP Econ, Calculous, Astronomy, Research class for a program I got into (1st semester)
[ *] Essays: Common App was really good & interesting. I also transferred to a private school Sophomore year and had a few lower grades (About 86 gpa) so my essay touched on that. Also, I have a huge upward trend… will that help? I did not visit because I did not get to fit in it (so unfortunate, because this is my top choice) My essay about why I was applying to the LSA was very specific…will that show some interest? My essay about my activity elaborated on my leadership position…not sure if that is good or not.
[ *] Teacher Recs: 9/10: My chem teacher was the head of the science department and I had a very good grade, so I assume it was good. My English teacher really liked me and gave me an award, so I assume that was good too.
[ *] Counselor Rec: He knows me pretty well… 8/10?
[ *] EC’s:
- (12) Applied and selected to be a dorm proctor (Like an RA). It is a huge commitment, and not many people at my school are proctors…maybe 30 out go 550?
- (11-12) Yearbook Co Editor
- (11-12) Community service (on the board for Special Olympics and we host an activity every Sunday during the Winter season)
- (9-12) Lacrosse, varsity
- (10-12) Paid work (20 hrs/week during the summer)
- (11-12) Summer internship with Morgan Stanley
7.(10-11) Spanish immersion and community service (Costa Rica)

[ *] Other Factors/questions: I didn’t express a ton of interest, but my essay was specific about why I wanted Michigan…will that help? I also applied Early Action.
^Also got accepted to Tulane with a Premier Scholar merit scholarship(30k/yr) and not applying for financial aid…don’t know if that helps you chance me at all
