***The official University of Michigan Chances Thread:***

This is amazing thank you so much. I really have no idea if I have any chances of getting in.
I went to a small private school freshman and sophomore year and I did poorly freshman year with straight B’s once C and improved sophomore year with mixed A’s and B’s. I transfered to a big public highschool junior and current senior year and I got straight A’s junior year.

do I have any shot at all for Ross PA? The B’s on my transcript are mostly B+'s in honors science classes–not my forte…but hurt my GPA

Hi tayx63!

I’m happy to chance you for UMich … and I’ll give you a full eval.

Your UM GPA of 3.6 is a bit low for UM standards; however, depending on your courseload, that may be overlooked if you have taken a challenging curriculum, and based on what I know, NJ schools are highly competitive. I will also note that UM has higher admission standards for OOS students, so your lower GPA will put you in at a disadvantage. Try to make up for that with good essays + recs. Your ECs are pretty good and should help compensate for your “disadvantage,” and demonstrates your interest in your own culture, and most importantly, in business.

Your ACT is above average at a 33 - that is above UM’s 75-th percentile so that should help boost chances. Your SAT of 2100 is also very good and is near UM’s 75-th percentile. Overall, you’re a strong test taker, so don’t worry too much here.

Chances:
UM: Match
UM/PA: Reach (Average stats here are ACT 32 and GPA 3.8 … but write really good essays to make up for it.)

Good luck!
-ab2013

tayxz; My D had your EXACT stats last year (with almost the exact same rank)…and we are from NJ:

She was deferred EA and withdrew her app for RD (but was waitlisted anyway)…
Soooo, I think it’s a reach

But, good luck…maybe NJ applicants will have better luck this year…

thank you!!!

IB is a universal standard; IB exams are written and graded by outsiders … not sure what you mean by Canadian standards. Admissions are familiar with IB grades.

36/42 is not really competitive for the most selective schools like the Ivies.

goblue… i mean for predicted IB points… our teachers look at our Junior Year mark and then predict a grade. In Canada an 80 is an A … 90 + is is A +… for us to get predicted a 6 we need 90-95… for us to get predicted a 7 , we need a 96-100 in our Junior year. Thats what i mean. So what do you think my chances are at Mich

I don’t get it. Are you saying your teachers underpredict your IB scores? How accurate are the predictions compared with actual scores in general?

Not sure how to gauge your case but there are many kids with 38 or better scores applying from my area.

goblue… its hard to explain… all i am saying is i can get an A and get a 5 which seems unfair to me. Our schools val last year had 2250 on SATs and had 38/42…(btw i am talking out of 42 … not 45) so that seems like our teachers are a bit harsh when judging grades. Our val this year is a downright genius/near genius…and if he keeps his pace up, he will get predicted a 38/42… I am in the top 10 %… SATs over 2100… GPA decent… but yea i dont think i will get predicted over 36/42. I contacted some schools… Brown said they look for ‘37 or over’… JHU said ‘mid to high 30s’…i am assuming the standards at Mich may be similar or even a bit lower. These people you speak of… they are all getting 38+/42? Ummm… what are their SAT scores like? Lets say i don’t send in my Predicted grades… then how do my chances look like?
