Reach
you’re GPA is too low.

CLC2513…Perhaps blackpen is fair in his assessment of reach but the rank of your school and the fact that it ranks high in CA which has a reasonable rep for rigor makes up for your GPA to some extent. You’re highly focused interest in both science and music leadership give a nice quality to your profile. I don’t know anything more than anyone else on these boards, but if you can show an increasing trend in GPA, explain sophmore year issue, write stellar essays and get fab recommendations, I kind of like your chances! So don’t despair. Just know you do have a bit of a area to overcome and make sure you’re clear in your application about it!
Best wishes,
k

LolyGAGHa (when I saw that I thought of Lady Gaga, because I love Lady Gaga :D) anyways:

Both your SAT and GPA are quite low, granted you can retake the SAT without Michigan knowing. But at this GPA you’re in the top 20% which makes me believe that your school curriculum is challenging such that not many people earn As or your student population isn’t very hard working (But being in Chapel Hill, I’m gonna guess it’s the former). However, your ECs are quite impressive, and I’m sure you’ll have some stories to share in your essays. Invest a great deal of time on your essays and start writing them if you haven’t already, and apply ASAP.

Chances: Reach

Elasticity, I’m going out the door right now, so I’ll chance you when I get back.

[ *] Ethnicity:Black
[ *] Gender:Male
[ *] major strength/weakness: Low gpa; 3.35, But I’ve taken nothing but college courses for the past year and a half
[ *] Other Factors/questions:

I had a terrible freshman 1st semester (2.8 gpa) which lowered my gpa (even though it’s only a 3.61 without that semester)

Elasticity:

Your grades are good and you have a strong, rigorous course load (11 is a high number). Based on the opportunities that your school offered and your school rank, I’m going to assume that your high school was competitive, and that will play a factor. Your SATs are good for Michigan, though the score is probably not representative of your skills and abilities. Your ACT is great for Michigan and may even put you in the running for the Honors Program … you definitely don’t need to retake it unless you’re aiming for some higher caliber schools. Your ECs are OK for UG admit, but really they’re not terribly important for UMich unless you’re shooting for merit scholarships or the preadmits (in this case, weak). Other than that, I really doubt that skipping 10th grade will matter that much, but congrats on doing that.

Chance: Safety match, reach for Ross due to weak ECs

Solard:

Your GPA is a tad low for UMich, but you are URM so that will help, and you indicated that you have taken college classes, so admissions will understand that your prep for college has been rigorous. Also playing in your favor is the fact that you demonstrate an upward grade trend, and even better is that UMich drops your freshmen grades, so “Yay!” Your ACT of 29 is within UMich’s mid-50 percentile, but if you want to retake it, that is OK. Your ECs are weak, but they’re really not that important for UMich UG admissions. I see that you’re a legacy, but I’m not sure how that will play a factor.

My recommendation is for you to apply ASAP, preferably in mid-September to boost your chances. The earlier you apply, the better your chances of admission.

Chance: Weak match — URM status/upward grade trend will help

**I will also note that UMich seems to have admitted and enrolled too many students this year, so that may affect admission next year, because they may be more selective, but that’s not clear at this point.

In response to the post above. Sometimes I feel like I’m a product of Affirmative Action because I got into U-M with such low stats. I think Solard has a chance but its a reach. I’d say 20% chance or so.

UMich doesn’t count your freshman year, so Solard would have a 3.61 GPA. I’d say he’s a match.

[ *] major strength/weakness: 3.5 UM GPA
[ *] Other Factors/questions:

I must note that between sophmore and junior year I transferred from a private school to a public. The reason I transferred was because the private school simply did not offer many courses in science and mathematics, rather it focused more on humanities and such. Also the private school seriously deflated my gpa. I had a UW UMich GPA of 3.0 my sophmore year in the private school. When I switched to public school my non- Umich gpa for Junior year was an UW 3.8 and a 4.0 Umich gpa.

Stop wasting our time, don’t apply, go to Harvard.

Burdish, your stats are awesome but make sure you make other apps. if you’re looking for lots and lots of merit…I have heard of phenomenal kids like you who do not end up with a pile of merit $ at U of Mich and you’re not likely to access much, if any, need-based aid. (That’s because 52% of students have higher than a 3.9 average, for example…) There is the Shipman, which is full ride if you make the final cut. Not a ton of those. There are also the Michigan Tradition and Michigan Experience awards, which are $10,000 each but are often used for underrepresented areas (eg. maybe an urban school district…).
Just wanted you to know now to make sure you apply to fiscal safeties too if finances are an issue just to be on the safe side. (And for harvard, you’d still be 1 in 10, I’m afraid…that’s just how those numbers run : ) So don’t take it for granted but if you can write an essay and haven’t alienated any of your recommenders I’d say you’re a strong match.

I have a question. I plan on applying for transfer in the fall, and in college I fell like I have excelled. I will post all my credentials if needed. But, in high school I didn’t do that great, and my SAT score is low (1620/2400). When I spoke to a Michigan Representative, she said don’t retake the SAT because it was designed for high school students. But I feel that I can score higher if I retake it, and I feel my only weakness in my transcript is my high school record, and my SAT. How important is SAT scores and high school transcript if I completed 2 years of college? Should I disregard what the Michigan representative and retake the SAT anyways? I am also out of state and applying for the engineering program. Thanks for help in advance.

ab2013,

In the little time that I have left, can you suggest anything that will boost my EC’s?
I’m already volunteering regularly at two places, so I don’t think volunteering more will necessarily help much.
