It’s not good to pile on ECs for your senior year. It’s a little too late for that, because admit committees (especially at Ross preadmit and at the top privates) like to see that you’ve dedicated time to a club (preferably sticking to it for most if not all of your HS years) and that you’ve demonstrated leadership (gained an officer position or became president). Leadership is especially important when it comes to Ross, and I’m not entirely convinced that the Ross admit committee will be particularly pleased with your EC profile. The rest of your stuff is solid, but I don’t think you have the “complete” package (Not everyone does … I didn’t either, so it’s OK).

To the other CCers who want chances … I’ll be back soon, especially after I’m done restoring my computer. A virus attacked my computer last night, and somehow it messed with my computer so that Windows couldn’t boot up, so I had to reinstall … like … everything.

Hello, need help with a terminology here “UM unweighted GPA”. My son is in a very competitive public school in SE Michigan. His official transcript of the high school has a GPA posted. That one is calculated with A- to A+ as 4 and B- to B+ as 3 for all classes my son took from the freshmen year to the junior year. Is that the same thing as UM unweighted GPA? If different, how is UM unweighted GPA calculated? Thanks for help

I found the answer in another post that says:

to calculate ur umich gpa goes like this: Grades are determined using an unweighted 4.0 scale: A (including plus or minus ) = 4.0, B (including plus or minus) = 3.0, C (including plus or minus) = 2.0, D (including plus or minus) = 1.0, and E or F = 0.0. No extra (GPA) weight is given to Honors, Accelerated, or Advanced Placement courses; however, the difficulty of a student’s curriculum is taken into consideration within the admission’s process. Additionally, only academic courses from 10th and 11th grade (Foreign Language, Social Studies, Science, Mathematics, and English) are used to calculate the GPA.

[ *] Other Factors/questions: financial aid questions? i would be fine with going to umich but im worried that i will waste my time applying, just for them to give me a small amount of financial aid. my single parent mom makes 46,000 a year and we just can’t afford the out-of-state tuition :/

Your ACT is in line with UMich’s range, but your UM GPA is quite low, but clearly there was a discrepancy between the two schools you went to … and UMich would see that as an upward grade trend. I think it’s more likely that UMich will put more emphasis in your later grades … hence they will look more closely into the school you go to now, because that is the school that will influence you more in the long run … and be the one that prepares you for college. But I really think your EC profile is outstanding, so that should help you out a little. My advice is to apply ASAP (mid-September, I usually say), and spend time on those essays.

Your academic profile is very strong indeed, though your EC profile is a bit more iffy. I really don’t think you’ll have much of a problem applying to UMich … I’d be completely stunned if you didn’t get in. That said, I clearly don’t have much to say.

Chances:
UMich LSA: In
UMich LSA HONORS: Safety match
UMich Merit: Slight reach due to iffy EC profile

OK … your UM GPA is not a problem … but your school rigor may be a problem, because your courseload may be a little light for a UMich applicant. Your ACT is in line with UMich’s average, and your EC profile is pretty good … that International Cricket thing is very cool indeed but it won’t guarantee admission unless you’re a sports recruit. Apply ASAP … I think the international status will make it harder for you to get in.

Chances: Slight reach, perhaps bordering on reach

Your ACT is solid, and your grades are good, supported by a strong course rigor. You shouldn’t have much of a problem at UMich unless you apply late.

Chances
LSA: Safety match
Honors: Slight reach

Others:

Chanced by other CCers … I am going out the door … cya in a week!

[ *] College (LSA, engineering, etc.): LSA
[ *] SAT: N/A
[ *] SAT IIs (if sent): N/A (I might take one in Biology this fall though)
[ *] ACT: 32 (E-35, M-35, R-27, S-31, W-8)
[ *] UM unweighted GPA: 3.94 at the beginning of my Junior year; it should be around a 3.96-3.98, but I doubt that will make that much of a difference.
[ *] Rank: 5/152
[ *] Other stats: I went to a community college my freshman and sophomore year and took class there. Music Theory I and II, Calculus I, and Anatomy and Physiology were taken when I was 15. I attended the high my Junior to see if I had made the right decision and took 2 of the 4 APs that they offer (5s in Calc AB and US Gov; actually I was the only kid to get a 5 in any of the classes which should say a lot about the high school and hopefully my study habits). I plan to attend the community college again and take Music Theory III and IV and Gen Chem I and II along with auditing Human Physiology (cannot take it for credit because it is a 400 level course) and MV Calculus (did not have the Calc II prereq). However, I do plan to send a note from my professors explaining why I wasn’t able to get credit and the tests that I will take (or at least the results).
[ *] Subjective (ECs, special circumstances, etc): Swimming (3-4 years), Soccer (2 years), Track (2-3 years), NHS (2 years), and Key Club (2 years); my most important EC is the piano though (my repertoire includes Rachmaninoff’s Prelude in C-Sharp Minor, Brahm’s Rhapsody in G Minor, and Debussy’s Clair de Lune to name a few. I am currently working on Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata and will start Chopin’s Revolutionary Etude).
[ *] Essays: Should be good
[ *] Teacher Recs: Should be excellent
[ *] Counselor Rec: It will depend on whether the high school guidance counselor writes it (she is quite incompetent and has already stated that she will not write a good letter for me; they are not big fans of students participating in Post Secondary Option) or my acdemic advisor at the college writes it
[ *] Hook (legacy, recruited athlete, etc.): I am from Ohio with two parents who are OSU alums and I applying to Michigan…if that isn’t a hook, I don’t know what is. Well maybe it would help if I was 6’6", had 4.3 speed, and played QB to help Rich Rodriguez.

[ *] major strength/weakness: Study habits and the piano; weak ECs though
[ *] Other Factors/questions: Thank you for taking the time to read this and sorry for it being long.

ACT 23
GPA 3.96
Taking AP Calc, AP Phys, AP Span, all in senior year, and AP gov last year and got a 3.
Im european, ive lived in michigan for 11 years,
I have 0 volunteering hours, can I still volunteer? and if i do the hours will show up in my senior year so theyll think i loaded it all on senior year.

^ Yeah, volunteering doesn’t help you much anyways. Its mostly about the numbers, and your ACT is really low…I’m guessing that the admissions officer will see your high GPA and very low ACT, and assume that your courses are easy. Raise your ACT asap.

Michigan does not place too much weight on ECs. Given its stature in Athletics, Music and the Arts, it will attract World classathletes and artists anyway. Generally speaking, unless you are exceptional, Michigan will weight GPA the most and ACT/SAT second most. Is your GPA weighed or unweighed?

I agree with yosup, you need an ACT score of 27 at least if you want a reasonable chance of admission.

[ *] College (LSA, engineering, etc.): LSA

[ *] UM unweighted GPA: 3.85-3.9, don’t exactly remember…
[ *] Rank: At least top 10, my school doesn’t finalize rankings till graduation (takes ACT, GPA, and courseload into account), so my counselor should explain that I will graduate ranked higher than I am now…I should be top 5
[ *] Subjective (ECs, special circumstances, etc): NHS, 3 years football, 1 year track and field, 1 year baseball, Student Mentoring
