NJSterling, solid/safe match. Again, apply as soon as possible. there is nothing like an acceptance froma top university before Christmas time.

That would be a nice Christmas present…It would suck to get rejected right before christmas =[

Also…what would be my chance at getting aid? I can’t relly afford to go there…rite now but I also wouldn’t qualify for need based aid.

^ Probably a match. Maybe being a woman in engineering will help? idk.

There’s no way you’ll get rejected.

I hope not, but I want to get my application in ASAP

what do you think about getting any merit-based aid?

^ I don’t really know about merit aid too much, but from what I’ve read around this site, I don’t think you’ll receive much merit based aid. Maybe a little to compensate for the high OOS tuition, but nothing much.

–College (LSA, engineering, etc.): LSA Residential College
–SAT: 2110 (750CR, 640M, 720)–will probably not send
–SAT IIs (if sent):
–ACT: 32C from March (36E, 29M, 34R, 30S, 11E)–scores pending from last Saturday’s test
–UM unweighted GPA: 4.0
–Rank: We don’t officially rank until graduation time, but I think I’ll be salutatorian.
–Other stats: I’ve won some creative writing awards and am National Merit Commended.
–Subjective (ECs, special circumstances, etc): Professional choir (4 years); debate team (3 years, some speaker awards); Quiz Bowl team (3 years, 2 as varsity); volunteer with youth opera camp in the summers (4 years); interned with local hospital in cancer center and neuroscience units (this past summer); Student Council (1 year, serve as secretary and member of various committees)
–Essays: Working on them. Not sure how well they’ll turn out.
–Teacher Recs: My math teacher is writing one, and one of my history teachers will be doing the other. The math teacher loves me and is a UMich alumna.
–Counselor Rec: Hopefully decent, but I don’t have much confidence in her abilities. She likes me, though.
–Hook (legacy, recruited athlete, etc.): None
–Location/Person: West side
–State or Country: Michigan
–School Type: Best school in the area and second best in the state (judging by test scores)
–Ethnicity: White and nerdy
–Gender: XX ![]()
–Major strength/weakness: My math test scores are definitely drawbacks.
–Other Factors/questions: None

@phanatic

your in no doubt…I wouldn’t even worry about it

phanatic:

I see '14ers have revived this thread, so let’s see:

Your SATs aren’t bad … they’re decent for Michigan, probably on the same level as your ACT. Math is for sure a weak spot though. On the other hand your English skills are strong … our brains are wired differently like that, I guess. You are IOS so that will help you out. Your GPA is great (4.0 … that’s hard to beat :)) and your ECs are quite strong as well. I think you’re in as long as you apply ASAP.

^bearcats:

Go and open a new thread, b/c this thread is a little too congested. We could have some interesting results. :D

I know right… maybe those getting rejected by early response hear back earlier than those accepted and deferred.

Just so you all know, it’s almost impossible to get flat-out rejected in the Early Response round. The vast majority of those who don’t get accepted in either October, November, or December, get deferred to the Regular Decision pool.

^ thats really good to know aajjc

In about 2 weeks I went from thinking of not applying to being confident about getting in. The only hard thing for me is writing the 500 word essay

I’ll play:
–College: Trying to decide between LSA and Kinesiology (Sports Management)
–SAT: 2130. Only took once, 2 yrs ago; will not send.
–SAT IIs (if sent): 740 USH, 800 WH
–ACT: 33 (31E, 35M, 34R, 32S, 9E)
–UM unweighted GPA: 3.75. Course load rigorous; 3-4 APs per yr last two years, plus majority of honors/TAG all 4.
–Rank: Somewhere between top 25% and top 1/3. Extreme upward trend; pretty much all Bs first two years, almost all As last two.
–Other stats: AP scores: E Hist 5, Stats 5, English Comp & Lit 4, US Hist 4. AP Scholar w/Honors, Best Business Plan (Econ.).
–Subjective (ECs, special circumstances, etc): Nationally ranked athlete (4th in country in one event, 11th in another). On track to represent the U.S. in Nations Cup competition if I can figure out how to finance it. Currently taking gap year (graduated in May) to work for top professionals in my sport and to do some community service.
–Other ECs: The Innocence Project (Sr. year). Leaving at end of next month to go to Haiti to work for humanitarian organization for two months. Going to Europe in the spring to work for Olympian/top industry pro.
–Essays: Excellent.
–Teacher Recs: ??? How do you guys find this stuff out? At my HS, they won’t write them unless you waive the right to see them. Asked my AP Hist. teacher (has known me thru HS) and my AP English Teacher Sr. yr.
–Counselor Rec: ??? Again, how do I know? I was one of 125 Srs assigned to her; met with her briefly maybe 5 times my Sr. yr. She definitely thinks I’m a maverick, but who knows if she thinks that’s good or bad. She did tell me that in ten years of HS counseling, I’m the only one of her kids who’s ever done a gap year.
–Hook (legacy, recruited athlete, etc.): Obviously, athletics. (Unfortunately, at Michigan, my sport is only a club sport.). My real hook is the maverick/determination thing, tho. Most kid-athletes who compete and train at my level go to high school at special sports academies or online. For financial reasons, the only way my folks could make it work was for me to continue to go to my local public HS. Since my sport is centered on the East Coast, I had to fly back & forth to compete & to train (my coach lives & trains 2500 miles from my home). I had to withdraw and self-study for huge periods of time, then re-enroll before the end of the semester & take finals. Some of my teachers were great, but others REALLY didn’t like what I was doing and made it as hard as possible–refused to give me assignments, refused to answer questions, one even refused to let me take my books with me. I ended up missing something like a third of my HS classes, but I managed to make it all work.
–Location/Person: Urban
–State or Country: Texas
–School Type: One of best public HS in state. 99% of grads go to college but only a few go to top colleges (e.g., Ivies or top LACs).
–Ethnicity: White (part Blue Ridge Mountains, part German Jew).
–Gender: Female
–Major weakness: Obviously, my class rank. Also, tho I took 3 other AP courses, including Calculus, I never took the AP exams because competition schedule in Jr. year conflicted. Finally, don’t know how those recs are going to be, because with all the school I missed, there was a certain distance and even maybe a touch of resentment (on their part, not mine) in those relationships.
–Other Factors/questions: Is Kinesiology easier to get into than LSA? I really don’t know if Sports Management is something I’m ready to commit to: also want to explore History, Psych, etc.

Advice? Chances? Suggestions??? Thanks!

LSA or American Literature (still deciding)

I’m aiming for getting deferred or waitlisted…I dont really expect getting accepted right away on Early Decision

YoMomma - Be sure to tell your story, through the supplemental and in your essay responses because you sound like you’re a good fit. Add a recommendation from your coach to compensate from possible teacher recc/counselor recc.
AND I think you’re GPA is higher than you think b/c you get to DROP all Freshman year courses to calculate the “Michigan” GPA, which is gr. 10 and 11, core academic courses, unweighted. So, given all that, I say match.

(Ooops, see you’re taking gap year. So gr. 10 + 11 + 12, which gets rid of a whole year of Bs, right?)

kmc–thanks for the encouragement. Doing as you suggest, trying to strike the right tone (explanation but no excuses/whining).

Re GPA–above GPA is already the Michigan UGPA, Jr. & Sr. yrs only. Unweighted GPA all 4 yrs of HS is 3.45. Jr & Sr. yrs GPA just 3.75 b/c Jr year AP calc teacher was one who wouldn’t play/allow me to take book. So, during spring tried to beat the system by taking AP calc online in a course with no instructor, just a book & a syllabus. Let’s just say I learned that I can’t teach myself calc–got a “C”!!.

Guess the positive spin there is, the experience does make one appreciate a good teacher.

Any clue about difficulty of admission in kinesiology v. LSA?

It’s A LOT easier to get into kinesiology since it’s new, and not many students apply there anyways.
