[ *] ACT: none
[ *] UM unweighted GPA: 2.9 (real UW 3.4, W 4.23)
[ *] Rank: doesn’t rank, probably top 20%, there are only around 15-20 students in my grade (out of 380) that took as hard or harder classes

[ *] Other Factors/questions: trying to have app in before Oct 1st…I officially requested my guidance office to send my transcript/counselor rec beginning of last week, but judging by how they’ve dealt with my other college requests it won’t be there until 2nd week or so of october…

^ Quantum reach.

[li] Ethnicity: White
[/li]

[li] Gender: Female
[/li]

[li] major strength/weakness: essays are a strength, test scores/gpa/lack of hook are a weakness. And I’m OOS.
[/li]

[*] Other Factors/questions: I’ll be applying early. Thanks!

^ Probably a low match. Your GPA is a little low for an OOS, but I think you’ll be okay since you’re applying early.

Mine got skipped too…

[ *] College (LSA, engineering, etc.): LSA, hopefully business
[ *] SAT: 660/680/690 (probably not submitting)
[ *] SAT IIs (if sent): n/a
[ *] ACT: 31 (going for a higher score this month; aim is 34)
[ *] UM unweighted GPA: 3.89
[ *] Rank: 12 of 179 (Top 7%)
[ *] Other stats: IB Candidate, have taken 8 AP courses. Weighted GPA is 5.02.
[ *] Subjective (ECs, special circumstances, etc): Forensics (32nd best orator in the nation), Captain in Forensics, Premier Distinction [1500 pts], Student Body Secretary, President of NHS and Interact, President of School Youth in Government, President Pro Tempore of South Carolina Youth in Government, Varsity XC, Boys State, 9 years of piano. Lots of community service, Presidential’s Volunteering Medal - Silver. Going for gold now.
[ *] Essays: Really creative. That’s all I can say, haha.
[ *] Teacher Recs: Good, I’d say.
[ *] Counselor Rec: Very good.
[ *] Hook (legacy, recruited athlete, etc.): N/a
[ *) Location/Person: South Carolina US Citizen?
[ *] State or Country: South Carolina, USA
[ *] School Type: Public
[ *] Ethnicity: Asian
[ *] Gender: Male
[ *] major strength/weakness: Weakness is probably low AP scores (I’ve passed 5/8 AP’s) but if I don’t have to self-report all of em it’ll be okay. Average SAT/ACT scores and a lack of hook. Strength is probably my EC’s and essay.
[ *] Other Factors/questions: I don’t know if I should ER or RD. I’m hoping this can help me decide…

Does anyone know if scholarships are still considered if you RD? That’s my main thing (that and an honors program). Being OOS is definitely hurting me I think.

I’m just worried if I ER I might get rejected.

edit: Is there a diff. between a typical unweighted GPA and an UM unweighted?

Prism, UM unweighted is core classes 10th and 11th grade…

And you have a really good chance to get in.

Your chances are much stronger for ER because the majority of applicants apply ER–if you wait until RD then you will be competing against some really good applicants when there are few seats left.

U of M GPA doesn’t count +s or -s. In other words, B+ = 3.0, B- = 3.0, etc.

As for your chances I think you are a match ER (submit ACT, not SAT) and that the essays and LORs will be the deciding factor, so write well and choose the right recommender.

Good luck!

RONDIZZLE: Wait, so 9th grade doesn’t count period? How do you define core? Math, science, english and history?

And thanks!

smart.cookie: Thank you very much! Does UMich do standard unweighted? A = 4, B = 3, and so on so forth? What is LOR?

I guess I should work on my ER now then. :)

@Prism:

U of M does standard unweighted. LOR= letter of rec

Best of luck! Make sure you get your transcript request to your counselor soon so that it gets processed quickly.

^ Yeah, ER for sure. You still have a month.

And yep, 9th grade doesn’t count. Core classes are math, science, history, english, foreign language, and computer science.

LoR = letter of recommendation.

^this is why my Michigan gpa is so low. I had a 3.9 in 9th grade, then I had a horrible sophomore year and then a good year again in 11th. It also doesn’t factor in strength of schedule. …■■■ :D

^ U of M expects everyone to take rigorous courses and have a high GPA. I honestly don’t think a 2.9 GPA will have any chance at all, unless they’re a URM with a massive hook (sorry!), and the fact that you’re OOS makes it worse.

Applying for summer could help, but I still think you have virtually no chance =[

[ *] College (LSA, engineering, etc.):LSA (political science)
[ *] SAT:1990 (retaking)
[ *] SAT IIs (if sent):
[ *] ACT:
[ *] UM unweighted GPA: 3.3
[ *] Rank: School doesnt do ranking
[ *] Other stats: 2 AP classes (Statistics and Environmental science), lots of honor classes
[ *] Subjective (ECs, special circumstances, etc):
4 years baseball with summer baseball all 4 years
4 years basketball
14 hrs/wk job at nursing home
Refereed youth basketball games
4 year nursing home volunteer
4 year jimmy fund volunteer

honor roll
[ *] Essays: should be good
[ *] Teacher Recs: great
[ *] Counselor Rec:great
[ *] Hook (legacy, recruited athlete, etc.):none
[ *) Location/Person:Out of state
[ *] State or Country:MA
[ *] School Type: public but very competitive
[ *] Ethnicity:white
[ *] Gender:Male
[ *] major strength/weakness:GPA?
[ *] Other Factors/questions: Upward trend of grades (from 3.26 freshman year to 3.8 junior year)
applying early

What was your GPA for your sophomore and junior years? Michigan completely disregards your freshman year.

Sophomore year it was 3.45 and 3.8 junior year

Then that means that you have a Michigan GPA at or around 3.6125. I’d say you are a slight reach, especially out of state, but it wouldn’t be unfathomable if you got in. I got accepted in December with similar stats, so you have a decent chance.

I’m aiming for getting deferred or waitlisted…I dont really expect getting accepted right away on Early Decision

Moricarak, you will probably get deferred at first because of your GPA…But, your courseload is really good and if you get good grades senior year id say you get in

Oh wow, I think your chances of admission are decent. Considering you attend one of the top three schools in the state as you say, I wouldn’t be surprise to see a low UM GPA.

[ *] major strength/weakness:Academics/ECs

Thanks in advance!!
