[ *] Other Factors/questions: How much money would I expect to get as a NMF? What about honors college?

I already applied if that matters

^Always apply early response if you can! It always boosts your chances.

Right now you should recalculate your UM unweighted GPA the correct way:
A +/- = 4.0
B +/- = 3.0
C +/- = 2.0
D +/- = 1.0

Add all of your semester grades, divide by the total number of grades to get your true UM GPA.

As for your chances, I think you definitely have a good hook, and that your app would have stronger chance for Ross pre-admit if you raised your SAT CR to a 700+

Ross pre-admit is super competitive, so as-is I would say you are a match for U of M LSA and a reach for Ross pre-admit. I would recommend that you apply ER and then submit your October score when available if you want to retest.

@ BuddyMcAwesome

You are definitely going to be accepted. There is no honors “college” at U of M, only an honors program for LSA students. Check the School of Engineering website because I think they might have a separate engineering honors society for top students.

As for National Merit Money, I know that it is not a lot of money, but you would likely be in the arena for top scholarships like the Bell Scholarship and the Shipman Scholarship. As an OOS student you might receive anywhere between $5000-$40000 in merit based awards (per year, renewable) with your scores and application, though it could be less if competition is particularly stiff. It really depends on your essays.

Best of luck!

Looking back, it sucks that my GPA suffered a little bit because of my 3 B+ grades thru high school…They were all around the 88% range. Its dumb that a 79.5 counts the same as an 89.4, but oh well.

Smart Cookie thank you so much.>!!!

I wouldn’t say that Rondizzle, although it may factor into your GPA the same way, when colleges look at your transcript, an 89 will look better than an 80.

^ True, and of course it’ll help your class rank.

[ *] Major strength/weakness: Programming, I’ve won several awards in this and was the first place programmer at the states competition for BPA. In addition I’m dual enrolled at EMU, taking their third year computer science course.
[ *] Other Factors/questions: I’ve done several jobs as a web designer for local businesses and am currently in a job as a part time web designer

My biggest concern is probably my GPA but most of my classes were pretty challenging.

^ Your GPA is below average for engineering, but your ACT, SAT/SAT II’s, and dual enrolling for CS classes and web design work (which will especially help since you’re applying to engineering) more than make up for it. Tie it in with your major.

With your stats, I’d say you’re more competitive for engineering than LSA, so don’t apply for the latter thinking you’ll have a better chance. I was thinking of doing so, but I learned that I too was much more competitive for engineering.

Anyways, you’ll get in.

You don’t need to retake the SAT with a 35 on the ACT…

^ Agreed.

As for your chances, I would say you are very competitive for engineering despite your GPA. Be sure you are calculating that GPA without freshmen year and on the UofM GPA system :)

Really, I don’t need to retake it?

Anyway, with the UofM GPA system, I think it shoots up to a 3.9 something as most of the dragging down is done by A-'s which is hopeful.

For the LSA / Engineering thing, so I would be better to apply for Engineering because of my extracurriculars? Would LSA place less emphasis on that? I saw that both have an computer science program so I wasn’t sure whether to go for Engineering or not as state above, there’s a higher acceptance rate for LSA

If you have a 3.9 UMich GPA your chances are much better. I would say that you will very likely get in if you have mostly As and A-s

As for your question, I would recommend you call each school and discuss each program with an admissions representative. Likely the two programs are different in scope, so you should pick the program that seems more suited to your aspirations.

Ah ok, does it factor in that the classes I got worse grades in were largely English/Humanities type classes?

No, because they are considered core classes. Though the engineering school might be more sympathetic to a situation like that, as greater weight is placed on math and science courses.

xttang, I assume you go to Huron? You’ll get in.

Xttang: If you get anything 33 or over on the ACT you’ve got a very legit shot I think…in your case a 35 is damn good. Dont forget that the university loves to make their avg. ACT score look as high as possible to the public.

xttang, read my previous post if you didn’t already. You’re more competitive for Engineering.
Also, Engineering has a higher acceptance rate than LSA, not the other way around.

If you’re majoring in computer science, it would be much, much better to do so through CoE IMO.

I don’t know if you’re refering to applying only, but as far as the major goes (i.e. the classes you will be taking), doing CS through Engineering or LSA is basically identical (ignoring the non-major classes required).
