I was also fortunate enough to receive an internship in my planned field of study this past summer.

To everyone applying, keep in mind that U of M loves leadership positions in clubs, diversity, and a strong focus on a select few ECs that you’re incredibly devoted to/passionate about. They also love to see that you’re involved in after-school activities related to your intended major. Make sure to play up all of those factors when writing your essays.

Also, if you scored below a 30 on your ACT, I highly recommend re-taking it. Submit your application now with your lower score, but notify them on the app that you’re going to test again. I applied with a 3.98 GPA, leadership positions, lots of volunteer hours, and a 29 on my ACT. I didn’t get my acceptance letter until they saw I got a 32 on my retake.

Please help me , I’m a huge Wolverines fan!!! Which admission (EA or Rolling) would be best for my chances!!!

eromano33: I’d say that you are correct in calling UMich a bit of a reach. However, I wanted to clarify something. UMich has replaced its Rolling Admissions Policy with the choice between Early Action and Regular Decision. To answer your question, applying EA should help, though you might want to consider waiting if you will have big extracurricular opportunities lined up for you late in 2010.

Eddie, everything looks good for you except the most important factor Michigan considers, GPA. And based on that along with the fact that you are out of state makes Michigan a reach for you. Your extracurriculars look good, especially because you are on varsity for so many sports, which shows a degree of commitment but what I find concerning about those is the lack of leadership capabilities shown. Nowhere are you the captain or president or treasurer of any of your extracurricular groups. You are merely a long time member and I’m not sure if it is still possible for you to gain some kind of leadership position within that but if you can, it would be very advisable to do so. So the reality is that which you showed that you are an active member of the community you do not display the all important leadership quality and that may ultimately come back to hurt you. So the reality is that your ECs may not come back to help you all that much. And then your gpa is well below average for Michigan. The single most important factor the school looks at is your gpa and frankly unless you got a 2.5 freshman year and have a huge upward trend and get a 4.0 this year, your chances at Michigan seem pretty low. I mean you have your race (Asian), gpa, and state residency all working against you. But the one thing that you do have helping you a lot is the fact that you went to a private school. If it is deemed rigorous enough by Michigan, then your gpa may not look as bad and your ECs, essays, and recs may ultimately be strong enough to push you into Michigan. Good luck.
