Want to attend LSA for Computer Science (possibly School of Music for Stage/Theatre Design, but just ignore that)

So first and foremost, I go to a very small high school in rural ohio that consists of exactly 387 students total with 86 students in my class. Additionally, the school is so small that it doesn’t offer ANY AP classes, and only one Honors program (advanced math courses) that one is placed into in seventh grade. I am very worried how this will reflect upon my transcript.

Here are my stats:

3.75 GPA (out of 4.0)
Top 5% of my class
Freshman: A/B Average
Sophomore: A Average with a special Marine Bio Class
Junior: A Average with 3 classes at a University
I was placed in the advanced math program, so by the time I graduate I will have finished Calc 1 and Calc 2 at a nearby University (named by US News to be one of the top 10 Universities in the Midwest), as well as multiple other classes including Poly Sci, Anthropology, Programming, Intro to Psych, Intro to Philosophy, and Design (all of which I would be surprised to not get A’s)
My curriculum has been as vigorous as possible at my High School.

ACT w/ Writing: 30
SAT: Reading 630, Math 620, Writing 610 (I know these are low, I have one more opportunity to take it before EA)
Haven’t taken Subject Tests yet…

Extracurriculars:
VP of Class
VP in Student Senate for entire high school
4 years in Show Choir; student leader since sophomore year and president senior year
3 years in Mens Chorus: Prestigious Group that has sang at many important events throughout Ohio including the OHSAA Mens Basketball Championship
Drama Club for 4 years (this is a big portion):
Freshmen Year:
Featured Dancer and Stage Director
Sophomore Year:
Lead in fall play, choreographer and artistic director for musical
Junior Year:
Costumer and Lighting Designer for fall play, stage designer for musical and lead role
Spanish Club for 3 Years
Writing Club for 3 Years (typically only juniors and seniors are allowed entrance but I was voted to be allowed in my sophomore year)
Mu Alpha Theta (Math Club) for 3 Years
Started a Speech and Debate Team my Junior Year
Participated in the Production of 7 other musicals and plays beyond that of my High School’s Drama Dept

Spent 2 Summers working as a Lifeguard
Worked for 2 months at a local coffee shop
Just got hired at a nearby American Eagle
Will also be doing an Internship at a professional theatre company in Columbus

Volunteering:
4-8 Hours at Local Pet Rescue Center
Involved in a Community Restoration Project in a nearby city
Volunteer Usher at nearby Performing Arts Center
Volunteered at multiple children drama workshops this and last summer

Awards:
3rd Place for a painting I entered in a Arts Competition
Silver and Gold Honor Roll all through High School

I have had four teachers already offer to write recommendations for me including my guidance counselor; they have allowed me to preview their writings and they are very very good (the benefits of a small school). I also know how to set myself apart with my essays and can definitely write (I have been a featured writer on multiple gay blogs/websites)

Additionally, I am bisexual and participate in the local PFLAG chapter and will apply for many LGBT scholarships; something to set me apart I guess.

Thanks!

Where you stand today, less than 50% chance IMO. Your GPA is average (w/o a lot of AP’s - may not be your fault, but likely an issue) for incoming and your ACT (which is better than your SAT) is still average as well. These scores were likely good enough in 2010 admissions, but seemed to be mean waitlist/rejection in 2011. 2012 will be even tougher. You need to raise your ACT to hopefully a 32 or SAT to hopefully 2100. You are OOS, so that makes it tougher. Your bisexual may help in a scholorship but doesn’t make you a URM; so that won’t help for admission.

Zachary, as long as you took the most advanced courses available to you, I think you’re fine. But because you are OOS, I would worry about your gpa and ACT scores a little. I think you will need to get them higher. Your ECs look excellent and I’m assuming that your essays and recs will be good. If you were in state, I would say you are in good shape but remember that Michigan for out of staters is like trying to get into a near ivy. You should work hard to get good grades next semester and hopefully do better on standardized test scores, then I would say you have a very good chance at admissions, good luck.

^Just for a different point of view, I disagree with wayneandgarth to some degree. For example, what’s even more important than the actual GPA so long as it is in range is where you rank competitively within your class and what you’ve “done with” opportunities available to you. The fact that you attended a university as a dual-enrolled student will demonstrate that you’ve sought the most rigor AVAILABLE to you. You’ve also managed to maintain a respectable GPA while managing a very robust and demanding type of EC (Umich is very familiar with the demands of music and theater on talented students.)

However, I would be inclined to leverage your extensive theater background by applying to the theater program, because it sounds like it would be an awesome fit for you. I feel that the School of Music, Theater and Dance will give you a little more “credit” for the combo of “leadership” in theater tech WHILE maintaining a strong workload and GPA.

That’s just my .02 cents.

Remember that Michigan likes to attract students from underrepresented territories as well. I do not mean to artificially get your hopes up, but I just think you have a stronger chance holistically than 50%.

Best wishes!

The fact that your school is small and doesn’t offer any AP classes will not hurt you, however your GPA may be considered a tad low for non-AP classes. This is in addition to a good but not great ACT score. On the bright side, your EC’s are really solid. our chances would be much better even if EITHER your GPA OR your ACT was higher. The fact that they are BOTH hovering in the range that they are makes your chances for acceptance, imo, somewhere between 50 and 60%.

This wasn’t part of your question, but I’d like to add my .02 re. Michigan for OOS students. My S applied (Engineering), and was accepted, and fell in love with Michigan as an OOS applicant as well (we’re from CA). When all was said and done, he chose his in-state flagship school (UC Berkeley) over Michigan since he could not justify spending the additional tuition to become a Wolverine. You’re going to need to look at the cost differential as well if you are accepted. Good luck!

New here, and I’m really interested in this school, I really don’t plan on applying to many schools (3), so I was wondering if I had a shot.

Isomorphic - if your strength of schedule is very strong (loaded w/ APs, which you do say are numerous), you have a better than 50% shot w/ a strong essay.

Thanks, and yes, my schedule is about as rigorous as it can be next year (College Calc 1 and 2, AP English, Honors Adv. Bio, AP Chemistry).

I have a quick question about subject tests. To my knowledge, the subject tests aren’t required for U Mich. If I’m right, would a 750+ on the subject tests be worth the time to study for and take them?

Thank you for your reply, however I should mention that that ACT score was my first time taking it and I will be taking it again in September; I am expecting at least a 32. Additionally, my High School continually is ranked in the top 20 in Ohio, so hopefully that reflects upon the curriculum despite not having AP classes. Wishful thinking!

Thanks for your reply! Yes, I definitely have taken the most rigorous course load I could at my High School; I hope that this makes up for the lack of AP classes.

About applying to the School of Music…While I would LOVE to be in the Musical Theater program or the stage design major, I cannot allow myself to put over $150,000+ into education in a field that may not work out to my advantage. If there were some sort of double majoring I could do, that would be amazing; therefore I would like to first apply to LSA as I probably have better chances there and then find out what my options are for a potential double major or minor.

By the way, I want to study Engineering in college. Is this a good college to study it at?

Michigan does not super score. I think Michigan is a match or low reach for you since you are an OOS student. With admissions becoming increasingly competitive, I think your best bet is to try and get a better SAT score. Your EC’s are somewhat mediocre, but that can be offset by good essays. It think you have a shot though.

blobberhead, Michigan has an excellent Engineering school, one of the best in the country, in fact. This is one of the best places to study engineering at. And for your GPA, you will have to include freshman year because Michigan now looks at all of your grades. You have a decent shot at Michigan. I think if your essays and recs are good, you should be able to get in. Just make sure you keep getting good grades in case Michigan does require you send in your first semester senior grades.

Michigan does super score

dddsss, Michigan does not superscore. In fact, Michigan will only keep one SAT score on file and that is the only SAT score used for admissions and for data-reporting purposes (CDS).

[ *] Other Factors/questions:
Nothing.

Even from a good school, I suspect you will have a tough time with admissions. Your GPA is somewhat low, your SAT and ACT are pretty good but not very good (s/b 2100+ 31/32). Your AP’s/strentgh of schedule are also good but not very good (from what I can tell). I don’t know if being gay can help or not; likely not but maybe others know.

I think you can try to get your ACT or SAT up even higher, get outstanding grades 7th semester, write really strong essays and get great recommendations. Best of luck.
