[ *] Gender: Female
[ *] major strength/weakness: I haven’t participated much in school, but my many science classes I’m taking this year should be good as I want to go into the medical field.
[ *] Other Factors/questions: Is there a delay between Common App submission time and when the school receives the application? I have to talk to one of my teachers about my recommendation and I can’t do that until tomorrow at school. I’m a little paranoid that it will take a few days to process and I will be late.

Also, would it be detrimental to do regular admission or do they just give you a decision at a later date?

Thanks!

Out of State
Weighted GPA 3.6
Current Semester GPA right now is 4.3, freshman year screwed me.
Highest Composite ACT 31. Highest sub scores Math 31 Reading 32 Science 32 English 35.
5 AP Exams, received three fours and two threes. Received AP Scholar with Distinction Award.
Received a Prairie State Achievement Exam Award
Commended by my town’s mayor and city council with a Certificate of Appreciation for my community service.
Currently helping out everyday with Special Education Kids
Junior year I was an unpaid intern for State Treasurer Alexei Giannoulias’ U.S. Senate Campaign. Same year I was an unpaid intern for Governor Pat Quinn’s Re-election campaign. Also the same year I was an unpaid intern for State Senator Toi Hutchinson’s campaign.
ECs: Business Professionals of America (consecutively placed 1st in Economic Research in Regional competitions for two years. Also placed first, two years in a row, for Banking and Finance in regional competitions. Current senior member of my chapter’s executive board.)
Model United Nations
Youth and Government (Current candidate for Lieutenant Governor for Illinois’ YMCA Youth and Gov, if I win, which I will, I will be representing 1,000 students.)
Speech Team
Here is the best component of my application. I am the youngest Fall Fellow (Community Organizer) in the whole state of Illinois, maybe even the country, for the President’s re-election campaign.
My grades aren’t really that good, but they get better each year even though I take considerably more challenging classes each year. My ACT is decent for Michigan, but my Extra-curricular activities are the best in my school. And I can guarantee you this, no other high school student in the state of Illinois has more political experience then I do. Am I in?

@kjung, how do you know your class rank? I didn’t think Pi Hi or Huron, whichever one you go to ranked. Anyways, you should be fine. I don’t think anyone with at least a 3.9 didn’t get in from Pi Hi or Huron.

It is just an estimation. I heard that 3.9 or 4.0 are usually top ten percent

and also thanks! but do you think that my ACT score is good enough for engineering? because engineering is so much harder to get into than LSA

Class rank: 1 out of 318
Cumulative weighted GPA: 4.5 out of 5 (unweighted: 4.0)
Extracurriculars: Writers club (co-founder), newspaper (editor), world culture club (historian), world language honor society, math team, orchestra, piano, volunteering at humane society, Scouts
Work experience: Tutoring in music and foreign language
SAT score: 750 writing, 740 critical reading, 660 math (2150)
Out-of-state (I live in Maryland)
Need financial aid
Race: White (3/4) and black (1/4)
LGBT Individual (if that counts for anything diversity-wise - I’ve heard UMich is very LGBT friendly)
Since tenth grade, I’ve taken four AP exams and I’ve gotten fives on all of them.

I plan to major in Linguistics and German, so I’m applying to the LSA college.

College: Engineering

SAT: 2220 (2260 superscored: 760 M 780 CR 720 W)
SAT IIs: 780 Math II, 680 Lit, but I won’t send either
ACT: 35 (33 M 35 E 36 R 36 S 8 W
UM unweighted GPA: 4.0
Rank: 1 of 626 (so are about 8 other students; no weighting here)
Other stats: National Merit Semifinalist, Nat’l AP Scholar

AP US Gov (5), Eng. Lang (5), Calc AB (4), Psych (self-study, 5), Env. Sci (self-study, 4…shame, shame), Stats (4), US History (4), Micro (5); will take Macro, Physics, Bio, and Chem this year

Subjective: Member (currently treasurer…ooh la la) of Business Professionals of America (won some regional and state awards, and a nat’l award titled “Merit Scholar” - sounds more impressive than it is); about 80 hours of community service; member of DECA, not much else; really…this is my weakness

Essays: They were kind of rushed, but they should be better than those of most engineering applicants (don’t mean to sound arrogant, but come on…engineers); also, the community one was somewhat tough to write

Teacher Recs: How would I know? My English teacher liked me, and she smiled when I asked, but I never saw the rec.

Counselor Rec: Got a new counselor this year; her whole impression of me was formed through my record, and she seemed impressed; then again, she knows little else about me

Hook (legacy, recruited athlete, etc.): Nope…Chuck Testa
State or Country: Michigan
School Type: Public, 2600 students
Ethnicity: White (born in Eastern Europe, immigrated in 4th grade, if that counts for anything)
Gender: Male
Major strength/weakness: ECs are a weakness, but I hope the fact that I reached the nat’l level in BPA weighs a little more heavily
Other Factors/questions: Finished and submitted my app at 11:40 PM. Procrastination gets the best of me. I’m looking for confirmation that I shouldn’t worry much.

@kjung1234, it’s somewhat of a myth that CoE is that much harder than LSA to get into. It’s a little more difficult but not to the point that it’s like two different colleges. I think you should be fine, a 31 is above average for accepted students and your math is 34. Besides, you’re coming from an Ann Arbor high school, if you have As there, Michigan will take you. An Asian I know from Pi Hi got in early last year with a 3.7 and 28 so you really have nothing to worry about.
