@arip1215, I would advise you not to listen to what afrddy said, most of his posts have been junk. He’s just trying to make everyone feel bad. Contrary to what he said, you do not have a good chance. Your GPA is below the 25th percentile of accepted students, so is your ACT score. You are OOS as well, which automatically makes it much harder for you to get in. Your ECs are good but not good enough to make up for your other weaknesses. There is little you can still do at this point to make yourself competitive. I’m sorry but don’t expect an admissions letter.

@Arip1215 Dont be discouraged because of GPA. Being a senior I know that waiting for colleges is like ending of Inception when you are dying to know if the dreidel falls but the director just cuts you off and expects you to pretend like the next few hours after that movie would be no sweat…but it isn’t. I’ve been going through all the threads all day instead of studying for calc and I even posted my “stats” in haste. I talked to my school college counselor about this and although numbers are good, they aren’t everything. University of Michigan wants students that are well rounded and are able to mix in with the student body personality. You ACT is in range so thats good! But just because of your GPA you wont necessarily be thrown out. You have to remember that 3.8 is just the average. There are many outliers in the applicant pool that make up for it through other areas. I hope you really put thought to your essays! Anyways what anthonyxy21 rubbed me the wrong way because I found it a bit harsh when nobody really even knows your decision EXCEPT the admissions counselors. Don’t lose hope just yet.

@jessi2243, I never said along the lines of you will definitely get denied. I dunno, if I wrote it as you will be reaching, would it have made you feel better? Just because I write things in a rather direct manner does not mean I’m trying to be mean, I’m trying to be honest. Not everyone can get in and if you come here, you probably want to know realistically what your chances are. It’s just pointless for me to sugarcoat everything and write, “you have a ok chance at getting in, if you could just be slightly better you would get in”. You guys are not in elementary school anymore and it would only give you false hope. It feels much worse to actually believe you’ll get in and then get denied then to have someone lower your hopes at an earlier stage. Besides, if you hold the opinion that no one knows, why even come here for a chance?

@anthonyxy12 I understand where you are coming from. I never said that you told her that she has 0 chance. But what did catch me off guard is just the fact that to say “dont expect an admission letter” is a bit disheartening especially if this is her dream college, which it is in my case. I normally dont do forums ever but right now every senior I now is panicking completely and even i panicked and posted away. I know your intentions are not as harmful but these last 12 days are agonizing as they are. Better to just idk give a number chance at this point like admgod then just flat out give a number opinion if you have a feeling that they dont have a good chance.

@jessi2243, Michigan had always been my dream school too so I absolutely know how you guys feel. Imagine going through this all the way until May, that’s what I more or less went through. I didn’t actually make it into Michigan as a freshman and it was horrible because people built me up to the point where I felt like I was a shoo in. I had to transfer into the school. Knowing what I know now, I would have really appreciated it if someone told me I was borderline instead of saying I was more or less a lock. I honestly would have preferred if someone had crushed my hopes earlier instead of later. Anyways, if it makes you feel any better, I do think you have a pretty good shot at Michigan. I’m sure Michigan won’t view Skyline students different from Pioneer or Huron students since the teachers are all taken from those schools and its pretty much all Forsythe students. Pretty much everyone with around a 3.8 got in from Pi Hi.

and again anthony i may have had an overly strong reaction to what you said because I feel I’m in the same boat and I’m not as confident at the moment either.

@jessi, You shouldn’t worry too much. This Asian dude I know got in EA last year with something like a 3.72 and a 28 ACT. He went to Pi Hi and I think only took AP Chem through his junior year.

@anthonyxy12 why thank you. AAPS is grueling.

Another reason I am concerned is that I am applying to UofM Engineering. Do they differ when it comes to these average stats? I read somewhere (like Yahoo answers) that the average gpa for UofM Engineering is like 3.9. Thats what is really bothering me.

Posted earlier in the thread but got skipped…

[ *] UM Unweighted GPA - 3.58. Yikes. But…this is including freshman year, in which I got C’s in Honors Geometry. I’ll have taken 10 AP/Honors classes by the time I graduate, and Sophomore year I got straight A’s one semester, Junior year I got only 2 Bs in math and AP English first semester, all A’s except for a B in french 2nd semester. So long story short, hard classes, GREAT upward trend, weighted GPA of ~3.9 (4.1 post-9th grade)

Chance me! I know I’m far from a lock, it might even be unlikely. Michigan would be AWESOME though. And is it true that merit scholarships are sometimes awarded based on stuff like “achievement in the arts” and essays?
