@yoloyng wow, you are unique and have impressive stats. You will definitely be accepted if your essay is good.

What I meant to say is that for a very highly qualified student, UMich is often not a primary choice (the yield rate proves this).

Whatever you mean, it just shows the yield rate at UMich is about the same as Caltech, Northwestern, Rice, etc. It is definitely not Harvard or Yale though. It actually indicates >58% of the admitted students are also qualified and accepted by those more competitive schools. It shows in the admission stat and enrolled freshman profile too. By no mean this would suggest UMich to be a safety to anyone.

I guess you are right, but I think UMich would probably be a safety to somone like an NPhO winner (assuming great grades and test scores), but that is just my opinion. What do you think? I think the best statement here is “UMich cannot be considered a safety for almost anyone”.

Considering that UofM gives very little aid to OSS, that yield rate is quite impressive. Many OSS students who are able to get into Michigan aren’t able to attend due to the lack of financial aid. Heck, even many in-state students are not able to attend due to the lack of financial aid. Boston College, Emory, Wake Forest, WUSTL, NYU, John Hopkins, Rice, and Tufts all have lower yield rates than Michigan, even though they offer more in financial aid than UofM does.

It would be amazing if you can possibly chance me as I honestly have no idea about this whole college thing haha my grades really suffered this year because my friend died in a car accident. It was only in second semester when I realized that I was being stupid for letting myself go and barely managed to pick up my grades.

urghhhhhhhh hate how scary this whole college application thing is

Very good point @Miw140‌ . Are you sure about NYU though?

The lack of financial aid to oos students is a typical issue for most public colleges. That is one of the main reason why the yield rates are usually between 30-40% for them. When students compare financial aid packages and final costs for accepted schools, oos public usually lose in the comparison unless they granted a large scholarship which is not very often.

@yikesyikesyikes True. I totally forgot that NYU is not very good with FA.

[ *] Other Factors/questions: I’ll be applying EA only to Michigan

@shs631 Unfortunately, UMich is likely a rather high reach for you. The mid 50 ACT for 2014 admission is 30-33 and your score is far below the 25%. You do need to bring up your score significantly if you do want to apply to UMich.

@billcsho If I do end up bringing my score up to a 30 by the Nov. 1 deadline, would my chances improve significantly, or not as much considering I’m OOS?

@shs631 It will then bring you from high reach to reach or low reach.
