@nicobella You would likely need ACT35+ to get those major scholarships. You know there are at least 25% admitted students (near 4000) getting ACT33 (or SAT equivalent) or above while the better scholarship only go to the top few percent.

Could someone chance me please?

@marilo12 I would say you’re a low reach/match. Getting into Michigan these days can be difficult for an oos student. Your ACT score is about average. The 25th-75th percentile admitted student range is 30-33 for the entire university. For oss students, I would expect the average to be a little higher. Your GPA is slightly below the average, but your rigorous schedule and the competitiveness of your school should help make up for it. If you are serious about applying, I highly suggest you apply early action. Also, take the UofM essays seriously. Best of luck to you!

@JLaggot University of Michigan is a school that relies on a GPA and ACT/SAT more heavily than Extracurriculars. In Your Case, Your GPA and ACT are great and are above the UMich Average; however, Michigan’s College of Engineering is very competitive, therefore you need to stand out in your essays in order to get admission. Your Extracurriculurs are little general too Btw. To answer your last queston, Umich doesn’t prefer ACT over SAT, they are equal in terms of admission. If I were you, I wouldn’t send in that SAT score. You will get in if your essay is good!
good luck, (BTW I am Out of State as well)

Whatfreak, I don’t think Michigan relies more on GPA and standardized tests, but they seem to only be impressed by significant ECs that demonstrate genuine passion and extensive time commitment.

Before I post my stats, I want to calculate my UM GPA, any idea how? Also, is it true that they exclude freshman year when recalculating GPA?

Wait, does it matter though? UM stopped recalculating GPA as of 2009:

<a href=“The University of Michigan is no longer recalculating GPA! - University of Michigan - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-michigan-ann-arbor/796954-the-university-of-michigan-is-no-longer-recalculating-gpa-p1.html

With that given, I guess I’ll post my stats as they are.

Thanks whatfreak! I decided to go ahead and post my stats here because I see myself as really borderline, almost 50/50 as to whether I get in or not. It’s reassuring to think at least one fellow out of stater thinks I can do it.

[ *] major strength/weakness:
Good stuff:
-I’m a good writer; I can communicate my ideas effectively. The preceding point may not be made evident by this post, but it’s true, guys…
-When I find something I enjoy learning about (civil engineering!!!) I find that I obsess… Then, I gobble up all of the information I can get about said something…
-My extra-curriculars are great, but they aren’t very diverse. maybe a jack of all trades vs. one trade scenario?
Bad stuff:
-My ACT score isn’t good enough to be much of a benefit (even though it’s in the freaking 98th percentile in my state ugh), though I suppose it’s also not really bad enough to be a detriment…
The only B’s I’ve ever had have been in history… History is a core subject, so I guess if they recalculate my GPA it’ll go down a bit (assuming they count history as core).
[ *] Other Factors/questions:
Do I have a good shot at the CoE? And, sorry I’m so basic, but can I apply to multiple colleges within U of M?
Should I retake the ACT in September?

@billcsho do you know if they include freshman year when they recalculate?

@frake53 when I did the tour this year, they told us that they include freshman year and all electives when recalculating GPA

So they basically just unweight it? (That makes me so happy.)

@Skylark1 Wow! Your extracurriculurs, awards, and interests show passion for engineering. Your SAT is solid, and your gpa (converted to 4 point scale) is a 3.853/4 If your essays are good you are definitely going to be admitted. Lol dude, no offense, but shouldn’t you be applying for like northwestern or some other amazing school? You’re a little above it ;)

@whatfreak123 For one, he is not guaranteed to get in regardless of the strength of his essays. His stats are about average for the CoE. When you factor in that he is an international student, his odds decrease considerably. Also, you assume that Northwestern has a better engineering program, however, UofM is a top 10 engineering school and Northwestern is not. UofM is ranked in the top 10 in 10 specialty areas. Northwestern is only ranked in the top 10 in 2 specialty areas.

@whatfreak123 Northwestern may be more competitive than UMich as the admission rate is lower, but it does not mean it is better in engineering. Indeed, my D pick UMich over NU even they provide pretty good financial aid.
@Skylark1 What is your uwGPA? I do not see any grade on your post except for AP scores. Also, what are your single sit SAT scores? UMich does not superscore. Anyway, your superscore is around admission average, however, the admission rate this year is ~20%. As an international student, your chance is probably not higher than admission average.
