***The official University of Michigan Chances Thread:***

Also to continue two 5s on the only AP tests i was allowed to take – USH and Stat, all the AT classes i was allowed by my hs to take so far

also my UM gpa is wrong, idk how to do that…

According to college board website, UMich does superscore. My single sitting score is 2120 though.
I don’t get GPA in India. I got a 89/100(Composite of all subjects) in 11th grade. And I’m expecting 90+ composite in 12th grade.

@Skylark1 Trust only the school’s admission office info. UMich does not superscore.
https://umich.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2079/kw/superscore</a>
Also, you need to list out grades of each class, not just an average, before converting to the 4.0 scale. For instance, C is 2.0 while A is 4.0. It is a 2 fold difference in the 4.0 scale but not in 100% scale. You have to start the conversion from raw data (% score) to letter grade then to uwGPA.

Oh. I was relying on this: https://professionals.collegeboard.com/profdownload/sat-score-use-practices-list.pdf</a>
I should get As(A+/A-)in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Chemistry and English.

@Skylark1 That list is misleading. Also, you must have some grades below 90% to get 89% in 11th grade. Those are B(s) if above 80%.

@billcsho Are you an Adult or a Student? I’m only wondering, because, quite frankly, I have zero credentials for chancing people, yet I chance them based on what I see other people say on CC. (I assume most people who answer chance me posts are high school students like me…

@Whatfreak123‌, you can easily trace thru postings by @billcsho to see that he’s a well-respected parent of a highly-qualified student sharing a lot of good information on CC. Though he can’t guarantee the results while chancing others with the available stats published online (no one would be able to make that guarantee anyway), he’s not like the blind leading the blind.

[ ] College (LSA, engineering, etc.): LSA (More specifically, I am REALLY* interested in the honors program). I’d also appreciate it if you guys could chance me for any of the merit scholarships.

-Various Volunteer/Community service activities: Local Hospital (210 hours) + Various School Volunteering Organizations - a major one being the NHS (105 hours collectively) so over 300 service hours in total.
-What I believe sets me apart from others the most is that I have been conducting research alongside a college professor and a graduate student. They have been mentoring me since sophomore year and will continue to do so until the very beginning of my senior year is over (this is when I expect to have my paper completed). Without going into much detail at all, my problem statement concerns diabetes and certain carcinomas in Drosophila. By this September I will have 650+ hours spent in the lab.

[ *] Major strength/weakness:
Strengths - Academics
Weakness - ECs (In terms of community service and not holding an actual leadership title position in any of the clubs I was in)??? Not too sure.
[ *] Other Factors/questions: I’m applying for early action.

@StandingOnGiants Umich LSA should be a low match for you as in state student. You also have a very high chance to get into the honors program. However, merit scholarship is hard to say. Getting 35+ would be much more likely to get those major scholarships. You may try to apply additional scholarships that are not automatically considered by submitting EA. I know someone get the Bells scholarship with ACT score like yours. Also, UMich meets need for in state students even with a lot of grant money. In some cases, additional merit scholarships would not save you much money as it will be offset by the need based aids.

@StandingOnGiants‌ you’re in

@StandingOnGiants‌ freaking apply to stanford XD gosh dude. You have a very nice college application (if your essays are good)

[ *] major strength/weakness: ecs are really good, weakness is my gpa but when looking at the breakdown from class to class, i get like one B+ in either math or english (math because it’s the highest level possible for anyone in my grade, and because i suck at english)

Hey guys,

As my name suggests, I am very nervous about going to college (class of 2019).
So, if it is not too much of a bother, could some of you chance me for U of M Engineering?

[ *] College (LSA, engineering, etc.): Engineering
[ *] SAT: 2230 (probably won’t send unless advised otherwise)
[ *] AP: Calc BC - 5, Chem - 5, Euro - 5 (probably won’t send unless advised otherwise)
[ *] ACT: 35 (36M, 36S, 34E, 32R, 8W) (will send no matter what)
[ *] UM unweighted GPA: 4.0
[ *] Rank: 3 of 534 weighted, 1 of 534 unweighted
[ *] Class Difficulty: Taken all possible honors classes, so I maxed out what my school can do.
[ *] Subjective (ECs, special circumstances, etc): Co-Captain of Quiz Bowl team, coach and member for Science Olympiad, member of NHS, did two mission trips for a total of 90 hours, part of local recycling organization, president of French Club
[ *] Essays: 7/10 or 8/10
[ *] Teacher Recs: 9/10, really showed my personality. 7/10, showed a little bit of me, but is from someone who writes dozens of these each year.
[ *] Counselor Rec: 5/10, average at best. Very generic.
[ *] Hook (legacy, recruited athlete, etc.): Father attended, sister still there
[ *) Location/Person: MI
[ *] State or Country: MI
[ *] School Type: Suburb school
[ *] Ethnicity: White
[ *] Gender: Male
[ *] Major strength/weakness: Very good scores, but my ECs and recommendations are not too great, and neither are my essays. I still have to revise them more, so they could become better.
[ *] Other Factors: Applying EA if I can remember to.

@WishfulSenior Your credential is near identical with my D who was accepted last year with scholarships. You should not worry about admission.

@billcsho Thanks! I was also wondering if you know whether being a National Merit Semifinalist/Finalist makes me a better candidate, or do they not care at all because it is related to the PSAT?

It is better than without, however, it would have minimal role. Your SAT score suggests you are as qualified as NMS anyway even if you are not.
By the way, my D has the same SAT and ACT composite scores but she submitted both as she also has a couple SAT2 scores.

I have extrapolated some unoriginal, slightly out-of-date acceptance rate stats based on a 2012 Ann Arbor news article.

36.5% acceptance rate for OOS, 53.8% acceptance rate for IS, and 36.6% combined for 2012

<a href=“Enrollment trends: Out-of-state students form 42.6 percent of University of Michigan's freshman class”>http://www.annarbor.com/news/university-of-michigan-sees-increase-in-out-of-state-students/</a>

According to the news article, 32,500 OOS students applied in 2012, versus 9,800 IS students for a total of 42,300 students. They accepted 15,500 students in 2012 expecting roughly 6,000 of them to enroll. The 2012 freshman class was comprised of 42.6% OOS students. The yield for accepted OOS students was 22%, while the yield for accepted IS students was 67%… The freshman class size was 6,124. 2,609 OOS enrolled, therefore 11,860 OOS students were accepted out of 32,500 who applied, so the OOS admissions rate was 36.5%… 3,515 IS students enrolled, therefore 5,273 IS students were accepted out of 9,800 who applied, so the IS admissions rate was 53.8%!

I know the combined admissions rate for U of M has gone down since 2012 – does anyone know if the OOS/IS admissions rates have furthered the extent of their differences, or have the admissions rates become fairer? I’m pretty sure the enrollment is roughly the same, and I know the trend has been more and more OOS kids applying… and I can’t fathom why the number of IS applicants would increase…

I did my figuring as I typed this – I’m glad I did because I’m pleased with my not-at-all-surprising findings… just thought I’d share!! Did I make any mistakes?

There is an error in your calculation. With a 36.5% admission rate for oos and 53.8% for in state, it cannot come up with a combined admission rate of 36.6% unless there are hundreds times more oos applicants than in state applicants.
My last estimation in a similar way was less than 30% admission for oos.
The number of applicants increase 10% in 2013 and another 7% the past year while most of the increases are believed to be from oos (as the in state hs graduate is steady or decreasing slightly). That suggests a 23% in oos applicants and the admission rate will drop around 1/5 from whatever value it was.

15500/(9800+32500)=0.366ish, 5273+11860=17133, and 17133/42300=0.405ish. Good call, @billcsho‌!
