[ *] Other Factors/questions: i like collegiate football so i wana go 2 michigan

@hornet11 Your GPA is a bit low while your curriculum is not particularly rigorous (with 2 AP only so far?). Your ACT score is above the 75th percentile for LSA but not really outstanding for Ross. As an OOS, LSA would be a high match to low reach (depending on your school profile explaining the mediocre GPA). Ross pre-admit would be a reach.

[ *] College (LSA, engineering, etc.): LSA
[ *] ACT: 32 (28 E, 35 M, 33 R, 33 S)
[ *] UM unweighted GPA: 3.94

[ *) Location/Person: Oakland County
[ *] State or Country: Michigan
[ *] School Type: Public
[ *] Ethnicity: White
[ *] Gender: Male
[ *] major strength/weakness: My strengths are my class rigor and gpa. My weakness is that I’m a white male.

@andyg223 Both your GPA and ACT are above admission average for LSA. It should be a match for you from in state.

OUT OF STATE (St Louis MO), MAJOR is Chem E.
ACT: 33c 34 superscore (36m, 35e, 31r, 34 sci, 11 writing)
SAT IIs: 800 in math II
APs: 5s in: Physics C: Mech, World history, comparative politics, and statistics
GPA: 4.00uw/~4.6w (on a 5.0 scale, with a 97-100 being a 5.0 for honors and AP and a 90-96.9999 being a 4.5 for honors and AP, standard 4,3,2,1,0 for regular classes and unweighted). Never had a B or A-
Class rank: 3/400 (fairly competitive public high school, valedictorian will likely attend Stanford and salutatorian MIT, 6th in state)
Demographics: White/asian male from Missouri, 210k per year
ECs/subjective: Debate (four first places at district tournaments, nothing huge), FIRST robotics, Beta Chi Pi science club, about 3 hours per week mentoring freshman students in study hall, world peace club (charity), played three years in the school band (first chair two of them, two awards at a local music festival), played in the school music sophomore year (3-6 hours per week for about 6 weeks), AP scholar w/ honor, Rensselaer medalist, 99th percentile on two national German exams 2012 and 2013 (AATG). This list isn’t really exhaustive, but it’s all I feel like putting down for now.
Senior year courses: AP Bio, AP phys 2, AP chem, AP calc BC, AP psych, AP english literature/composition
Essay: 10/10, multiple opinions, solid writing. emphasizes leadership and community service
Rec letters: Probably generic, but they’ll be good rec letters. 7/10
Major is Chemical Engineering

@nickchan1 You have great GPA and course rigor. Your ACT is around admission average for CoE admission. UMich does not superscore but they will look at your section scores. 36 in Math is good. CoE should be a very high match to low reach for you. The admission rate of CoE has dropped down from 30% in 2013 to 20% in 2014. It is likely to drop further this upcoming year. For OOS students, it is probably as competitive as some Ivies.

(junior as of now)

[ *] Other Factors/questions: is founding a club worth the trouble?

@billcsho Thanks!

@billcsho could you help me out brotha?

@taishi Your GPA is around admission average while your ACT is at the75th percentile. It should be a very high match to low reach for OOS. Since you are still junior, you may be able to bring up your GPA for a better chance. Just be careful as you are taking 4 AP this year. Don’t let your GPA go downward. You do need a good recommendation from GC though.

How much does being African American help in admissions? I heard they were really pushing to increase black enrollment this year.

@olampy It does help but it would not be at the level of several years ago.

@billcsho‌ what was different several years ago?

@olampy The affirmative action in admission was banned.

@billcsho‌ oh so race doesn’t come into admissions factors then?

It still does, as a way to increase diversity, but not as substantial as with affirmative action.
