@ehello129 Definitely give ACT a try. You never know. The mid 50 for UMich was 30-33 this year while the mid 50 for CoE was 31-34 last couple years. It may get slightly higher though as the CoE admission rate went down from 30 % to 20% this year.

@billcsho does michigan still recalculate GPA because I read somewhere that they stopped recalculating GPA. My regular unweighted GPA is 3.74. I have taken APUSH and AP Bio and got 4s of both. I am taking AP Calc AB and AP Calc BC as well as AP Physics B in my senior year. Would I still be able to get into the College of Engineering if they didn’t recalculate my GPA? My essays are pretty good and I have decided to get a counselor recommendation.

@Schmitty3333 They have resumed recalculation of GPA a few years ago. My D just got the enrolled freshmen stat from school yesterday. The average HS GPA of enrolled freshmen is 3.82 (3.85 for admission average), while the 75% is near 4.0 as 20% enrolled freshmen had GPA 4.0. That is for UMich overall, you can imagine the CoE stat would be higher.

@billcsho from this site it states that the median GPA for admitted freshman was 3.9 and the median ACT was 32 for fall 2013. Engineering does have a higher GPA but not by much. If I recalculate my GPA the way michigan does it would be a 3.81. Do you think my 33 compensates for this or not?

<a href=“Facts & figures”>http://www.engin.umich.edu/college/about/facts

@billcsho according to this site in 2009 they stopped recalculating gpa. Did they resume it since then?

<a href=“'U' to no longer recalculate GPA in admissions process”>http://www.michigandaily.com/content/u-no-longer-recalculate-gpa-admissions-process

@Schmitty3333 Yes, the median GPA for CoE was 3.9 in the last couple years. The stat for 2014 is not out yet. Mid 50 ACT was 31-34 for the last 2 years but it may go up this year as the admission rate dropped significantly this year. They did recalculating GPA the next year or so although they did not make a public announcement about it. The adcom is telling people about GPA recalculation at information sessions. ACT 33 is just slightly above the admission average for CoE, I don’t think it can compensate anything. However, there is no standard in GPA. 3.81 in your school may be as good as 4.0 in others. You should check with your GC or Naviance to see how your GPA compare with former students from your HS admitted into UMich CoE.

@smilelikeabunny, it should be a high match to match for you as your GPA and SAT are both slightly above 75th percentile.
@kthk5k5, CoE would be a low reach for you. The admission to CoE is getting more and more competitive particularly for OOS. Your GPA is near admission average while your SAT is within mid 50.

My counselor told me Michigan recalculates GPAs without freshman-year grades. Can anyone verify this information?

^ That was the way (and no subgrades) I heard several years ago (from my D’s HS GC). Since we live in town and I believe that should be accurate. However, I don’t know if they have changed the policy recently or not.

@nicholask In state student with 34 in ACT and GPA 4.0 should be a easy match for UMich CoE. Not sufficient for scholarship though. You may want to retake for a higher score if you are interested in merit aid. Anyway, your financial need will be met at UMich.

@shark90 strong test scores and middle of the road GPA. You should be able to get in, especially if your essay is as good as you say it is.

@PneumaticCow Are you responding to someone posted in 2008?

If above is your stat, your GPA would be a major concern. The average GPA for admission last year was 3.85. The 75th percentile is near 4.0 as 21% of enrolled freshmen had GPA 4.0 from HS.

@scalia13 It seems you have an upward trend in GPA and a great ACT score. For in state applying to LSA, it should be a match for you.
