The Olympics

abasket, there’s a delay at the short track. You’re in luck!

Do we know how much of a delay?

1,500 Final starting in about a minute…Introductions right now

Gosh, I hope Apolo wins!!! He’s awesome.

eta: bronze! = 7!!!

The Koreans obviously work together and looked unbeatable - unless when working together, they knock each other out.

Bronze - I’ll take it! (and likely so will he! )

Good for Apolo, but I don’t think it’s right for NBC to talk about him as if he’s surpassed Bonnie Blair and Eric Heiden in any meaningful sense. They each won five gold medals, after all (if I remember correctly), and Apolo’s won two.

PS: I watched a few minutes of curling earlier today, and fell promptly asleep. It ranks right there with rhythmic gymnastics in terms of my interest level. I’d rather watch marbles, if they made that an Olympic sport.

^^
I think that 7 medals are pretty meaningful. You can always pick it apart, but 7 is pretty impressive.

Agree re: curling. I don’t get it at all. How is it a sport? Is bowling a summer olympic sport? What’s the difference?

I haven’t been to the Olympics (yet!), but the cowbell thing is very common at cross country ski races at all levels. Spectators have them at our high school races here in Minnesota. I do think it is the spectators with them; any coaches along the coach are way too busy shouting instructions to the skiiers to ring a bell. I think the spectator areas are less “structured” for the nordic races, people usually just stand along the course at every race I have ever seen. They probably limit access to only certain parts of the course at the Olympics, but I still don’t think all the spectators are sitting on bleachers. And the spectators are probably very close to the course (except maybe in biathlon  ).

Cartera, that is cheap shot but not as cheap as Russia 1 cheering when the Canadians flipped over. Your comment shows about as much sportsmanship as the Russians did. Oh and just for the record the home advantage of training on the Olympic site happens in all countries not only Canada. All countries have been given training time slots and a large number of them did not bother to come, who’s fault is that.

I agree it’s meaningful, very much so. I just don’t think it makes him the “greatest” US Winter Olympian of all time.

Interesting you didn’t comment that I was hoping the Korean skaters would fall down. I guess you’re not Korean. I’m not there. I’m not competing. Sportsmanship is for the competitors - not for people sitting at home typing what comes to mind and yes, some of what is said is a cheap shot. Is it going to take someone dying to make the access more fair in future Olympics? I guess we’ll find out.

Who is the parent of a gymnast? Missypie? The ice dancing compulsaries is just like being in the gym whilst the level 5/6 music plays over & over & over. For me it was 15+ years ago and I think if I heard that music, I could do the routine right now!

Heading to Vancouver tomorrow to soak up the ambiance, the sun, the crowds and perhaps to purchase some cowbells, if they have them in the lowlands! Who knows, maybe we will buy some scalper tickets cheap!?

Well, there are probably some pretty amazing stories to come out of the winter olympics- I think the Shani Davis story is pretty amazing, too.

Have fun, somemom! One of my coworkers went there last weekend and said that the border crossing was a piece of cake. H and I are going skiing at Stevens. Should be a great day! Yardwork can wait another week :)

You guys did not like the compulsory dances? What about the grace, the artistry, the fire? Isn’t what we all want from figure skating? Just kidding  - I found it relatively boring, it was a good thing that the costumes were something to look at! The current leaders did stand out of the crowd, IMO.

Am I the only one who noticed that some bobsled athletes did not look too athletic? Beer bellies in spandex - ewww…

Put the average NFL lineman in spandex and he’d probably look pretty much like those bobsledders, only more so.

Donna, thank goodness NFL does not use spandex bodysuits! My guess is that many MLB players might look similarly unatrractive in bobsled tights :)

Yeah, those bobsledders in their spandex-- not a good look.

I was thinking along the same lines, but thinking shuffleboard instead of bowling.

Lighten up. We’re a bunch of spectators here, watching GAMES for crying out loud. Cheering, speculating, crying foul and complaining - it’s all part of the process. These are not issues of cosmic import.
