The Olympics

Yes, that’s his name, J.R. Selski. They showed the tape of his awful accident – one of his skates cut his leg, blood all over the place, just missed his femoral artery. It made me queasy to watch it. But that’s an amazing comeback.

Comcast suxxx… Canadian stations are not allowed to show Olympics here in WA. Grrr… NBC’s monopoly. I’m watching the first heat right now.

Apolo and JR are both local kids. This is JR’s first Olympics. I hope it is not the last!

So do they have you on a delay? How strange!

I may have to stop watching because out NBC stations (we have 2) are messed up and flashing. I thought it was our TV but none of the other channels are doing it. It is so bad I can’t even watch anymore.

Oh it just stopped. Weird.

I liked the part in the opening ceremony where it looked like ice flows were breaking up (right before the orcas). Can’t believe they didn’t use Michael Buble, though! I did love the Mounties, wish they had more closeups ;)

We have lost sound a few times during the opening ceremony. Grrrr… NBC stinks…

I thought one guy that was singing was Michael Buble. Then it turned out not to be. kind of looked like him.

Fun fact: my husband was a national-level competitor in freestyle moguls in high school and college – the guys who are competing for the US this year are guys he grew up competing against. He may very well have been in this Olympics if he hadn’t had a career-ending knee injury in 2004.

So we are glued to the TV this weekend – I get commentary way better than what’s on NBC, plus all the juicy inside gossip. :)

I also liked Sarah McLachlan.

Did he injure it skiing? I have pretty bad arthritis and couldn’t decide whether my knees or hips hurt worse watching some of the girls on the moguls. I’m not sure our joints are made to do that repeatedly!

I had a total hip replacement about 5 years ago so the thought of falling on it really gives me the creeps. I don’t know how these kids’ joints endure the pummeling.

Yeah Hannah Kearney! Our first gold! Was NBC not prepared for that win? Ouch, those knees! But, that sure was great form spiraling down the mountain.

So much coverage on Apolo. I was glad / relieved he medaled. I remember last Olympics when he slipped. That was an amazing race to watch.

Bob Costas is an idiot. He actually described winning numerious medals as “Phelpsian”. I wanted to gag.
They were not prepared for the JR Celski medal in short track. Good for him in hanging in the race and being there when the S Koreans wiped each other out. Drama!

Moguls - I think the American commentators were wishing for a Canadian win. I know Canada is our friendly neighbor but sheesh - cheer for the home team for a change.
They totally jinxed Michelle Roark’s final run buy saying she would either nail it or wipe out.

Note to Apolo Ohno: The little soul patch beard went out of style LONG ago.

^That drives me crazy. I find myself watching Apolo’s chin while he’s being interviewed!

About Celine Dion & her absence at the opening ceremony:
“Celine Dion didn’t make the Quebec premiere of her new movie - and she won’t be at the opening ceremonies of the Vancouver Olympics tonight - because she is in a U.S. hospital trying to conceive a second child, her husband says.” (per MSNBC)

swimcatsmom – Yup, he injured it in a fall at Junior Olympics his freshman year in college (and then skiied on it at US Nationals the next week…).

The girls in moguls tend to be able to have longer careers than the guys. The guys are skiing so much faster and doing tricks that are so much tougher, so when they screw up their knees badly, their competitive days are over. Hubby says none of the top guys have had more than one knee surgery (and he says it as though having to have knee surgery is totally normal!).

^^Plus simple physics would suggest that that a 170 lb guy would do more damage to his joints than a 115 lb woman would while falling or landing awkwardly after a jump.

" none of the top guys have had more than one knee surgery"…maybe the ones who have had more surgery are not competing anymore! Ouch! Must be sooo much fun for your husband.
Has anyone heard anything about Tucker Murphy, the cross-country skier from Bermuda? He seems to be a perfect person, brilliant pre-med Rhodes scholar from Dartmouth. Decided to pick nordic skiing while at school. From Bermuda, for god’s sake! Another member of the lucky gene club!
Jennie Heil attends my S’s school - all very disappointed last night. I wonder if she competes in another event??

I don’t mind the soul patch. Soul patch = Apolo. Bandana = Apolo. Great hair = Apolo (his dad is a hairdresser and has always done his hair). The bandana is signature Apolo is well. That is something athletes often do - have a signature thing, signature routine. Notice Apolo before races. He yawns continuously. (I wonder if it’s a building oxygen thing). He does some crazy facial/jaw moves. When we saw him race live in a small venue these things were SO evident, everytime he raced.

I was wondering about all the yawning yesterday.
