I just can’t stand liver (bad childhood memories–parents forced us to clean our plates) and Brussels sprouts.
Not crazy about shellfish like oysters and clams, either. I avoid cilantro. It tastes like soap to me.
Wow! You guys are making me feel great! I tend to think of myself as a picky eater, and I do eat many of the things some of you have mentioned not eating, but agree with many others. The only seafood I will eat is an occasional fish, tuna fish, shrimp and king crab (have had lobster; would prefer king crab). Can’t stand onion or mustard, or most anything in the onion family.
My kitchen is decorated in artichokes because I love them so much. My vegetable repertoire is fairly limited, but enough to get me by. But throw an onion in it or any mustard-based dressing, and forget it.
Only meat I really eat is regular beef, chicken, turkey and pork… nothing that is gamey.
Potato salad, or really any cold starchy salad with a mayonnaise-based dressing.
I used to enjoy oysters but I got really sick from a bad one and now I can’t go near them.
Where I live we don’t call those “salad”
My husband cannot stand the sight or texture of chickpeas or white beans. It makes him gag if I have an open container of them. My daughter cannot stand to smell yogurt if I am eating it.
I cannot stand shredded coconut -yuck! I also have a problem with pickled beets.
And sadly, I love tomato sauce but it no longer loves me. I feel sick after eating it.
^^I agree with the pickled beets. I Love roasted organic beets, not pickled beets. Deb22: I eat cooked tomatoes, not raw tomatoes. I also stay away from mushrooms and liver. My H gets ill with the smell of tuna fish or bananas. I’m eating much more vegetarian these days (except for mushrooms!
shellz: try roasted cauliflower! yum
I just realized what I would never eat… grocery store lard-and-sugar cake frosting (or any canned frostings, like Betty Crocker, etc.).
Cilantro…can’t stand it! And it seems to be in everything lately.
Life without fresh tomatoes would not be worth living
Yea, brains is something I haven’t tried and have no interest in consuming. I’m not a fan of liver either, tho H & S enjoy it a few times/year. S is literally allergic to any form of green bean–makese him wheeze. I am literally allergic & get hives from consuming crustaceans and scallops. I am the only one in our family who will consume natto but won’t go out of my way to get it. H likes lactose and gluten but neither likes him. D likes most things.
Younger son is like that. He’ll eat just about everything and loves a lot of things that don’t seem to agree with him. Thai food, cream sauces, and pork seem to be the biggest culprits.
Oh yea, am allergic to shrimp as well and reacently learned that many thai curries have shrimp as an ingredient. I was wondering why I’d get itchy after eating a thai curry that didn’t APPEAR to have shrimp until I started reading the labels of the cans they had for sale, including the sauces for several of the curries they made. Only their yellow curry DIDN’T have shrimp listed as an ingredient.
Monkey brains doesn’t appeal to me. Or any brains, really.
I’m not a big flesh eater altogether, although I did eat raw oysters yesterday & they were delicious!
Cilantro does seem to be something that some people love (DH & I) and others find tastes like soap (some of my kids)
I also cannot seem to gag down an oyster, I have tried several times, but just cannot do it
I grew up with a very very picky eater Dad so limited palate experiences & just cannot embrace and enjoy the briny flavors of seafood, but I keep trying. I can do a nice seared scallop, Ahi, halibut, etc., the dryer the better and I don’t want seafood juices sullying the rest of my food. I guess I need one of those kid’s divided plates. I feel the same about other meat, like pasta Alfredo, don’t put steak or seafood on top to ruin the purity of the sauce.
Another who hates all colors and types of olives. I also don’t like capers, and don’t like pickles.
Another one who won’t eat organ meats, altho I will eat pate.
I also won’t eat hot dogs after working with an older woman when I was a teenager who had previously worked in a hot dog factory. The stories she told me turned me off from ever eating hot dogs again.
DH won’t eat cream cheese or sour cream, but will eat cheesecake and onion dip.
Any cheese besides Parmesan and Brie. The texture and smell makes me gag.
One more that will not eat organ meats, including pate. Of the more “traditional” foods, I stay away from brussels sprouts, beets (except borscht), pickles, and pea soup. I’m not sure why pea soup, as I like peas. That used to be a traditional leftover dish from a ham dinner until the night I yakked on the oriental rug; that was the last time pea soup was served in our house.
^^ Opposite for me. I love a good split pea soup with hambone but won’t eat peas by themselves. I’ll eat raw cauliflower and broccoli but the cooked stuff makes me gag. Also, no organ meats, especially liver. I have bad memories of trying to choke it down at the family dinner table after drowning it in ketchup. Ugh.
American cheese. I don’t think it’s food. (And there’s a big textural issue for me).
