The One Food Item You Just Can't Eat

I swear , the only vegetables my mother ever bought from the produce dept were non-ripened, grainy tomatoes wrapped in cellophane and iceberg lettuce. She bought fresh fruit , but nothing much for veggies.

Raw onion. It gives me a major stomach ache and my mouth starts to salivate and I get bloated. they are fine if cooked, but not if raw!!! I also hate lima beans and liver, but they don’t cause me any pain…

My mom was an Adele Davis aficionado. She didn’t take it to extremes but it was definitely all about fresh veggies, whole grains and she was an early adopter of the sultan yogurt maker. We got home made granola bars in our lunches in lieu of cookies.

@Emilybee, we were in Southern California, where it all grows, there was no excuse!

@nottelling and @3bm103, I cannot stand the smell of cucumber. Not sure if I am somehow hypersensitive to it or what, but I just can’t tolerate the smell. I have met other people who feel the same way! Have you ever heard of super-tasters? They have many times more tastebuds than normal, and can taste things the rest of us can’t. Well, for some reason, I must be a super-smeller, like a bloodhound, but only for cucumbers.

cheeses: American, Bleu, Roquefort, Limburger
tripe, pig feet/knuckles, eel

Those above were adult choices I made.

Today, because it was forced on us every Friday: tomato soup and grilled cheese

bananas because I got sick eating a piece of banana cake at the age of 5

any melon that isn’t watermelon

Well, stuff I am allergic to, or course, and…

egg whites, lima beans, kidney beans(all textural issues…gross), very spicy foods

I feel that way about the smell of limes, fresh basil and fresh cilantro. Why have these things become so popular! I won’t even allow them in my house. Those strong smells take my breath away, not pleasant.

I cannot eat pine nuts

^^There is a thing called pine nut mouth syndrome, where eating pine nuts causes everything to taste rancid.

Wow! Interesting . . . I could just sit with my nose in a bunch of fresh cilantro and breathe deeply . . . yum! I love lime smell too. What I can’t stand is the smell of anything that is artificial fruit flavor/smell. I can’t eat cherry flavor, grape flavor, apple flavor, etc. I can hardly stand to be in the same room with it. I love watermelons but can’t do watermelon flavor. I am feeling a bit queasy just thinking about it.

surfcity- yep. I had eaten pine nuts for years with no problem. Out of nowhere had that reaction so I gave them up. Tried them again a couple of years later and had the reaction again.

Made everything taste terrible. Great diet plan though.

" I could just sit with my nose in a bunch of fresh cilantro and breathe deeply ."

Me too! I can eat it in bunches - as a side dish with beef kabobs.

On caviar, I hadn’t thought of it but I did try it once. Tasted like eating a spoonful of salt. Very gross. Now, this was $2 caviar at the grocery store that I thought “Hey, I’ve never tried caviar, why not try it for $2.” But I’m curious what “good” caviar tastes like.

I never had brussel sprouts as a kid but having tried them as an adult I like them. I used to refuse to eat mushrooms as a kid as well, tried them in college and now ever pizza I ever get has mushrooms on them.

Like ambrosia. OK, I have no idea what ambrosia tastes like, but “good” caviar is divine.

Ditto to that ^

More people seem to have trouble with Chinese pine nuts, which aren’t always labeled as such.

My H also has trouble digesting cashews until I learned that soaking them first helps.
Something about the cashew needing to pass through digestive system intact.

congealed duck’s blood and sea cucumber as well as sea slugs are my lines in the sand.

I love sea cucumber. Although the only time I have had it, was just minutes after it was gathered from the floor of Puget Sound.
Congealed blood I will pass on, and while I have enjoyed it in the past, I won’t eat pate anymore.
