That’s all there is to it. (I use a trick to make it not show up as a quote in my post.)

As a relative newbie to CC, I really appreciated the support from the “pros” on the MT posts. My D decided not to pursue that field, but I have learned so much that other prospective MT students ask where I got all the tips…and I direct them here!

Mr B used to laugh at me for hanging out too much with “my online people”. Not anymore! After benefitting from the travel and cooking advice I got here, he learned to appreciate CC and even brags to his buddies that I have a “secret source” filled with incredibly useful information. Love it!

I’m relatively new to cc, but I have a story to share from just this week. I have communicated with cesium55 a couple of times because he graduated from the college my son just started. My son had trouble signing up for classes, so he missed a couple of early lectures, had trouble getting some of his books, and still hadn’t figured out how to get a packet of material necessary for one of his classes. He wound up in the emergency room earlier this week, so it’s been quite a stressful time, at least for this mom 300 or so miles from my first to launch college child. I reached out to cesium55, and he was able to tell me what the packet was, where it came from, how my son could get there, and the name, address, etc. of the place. He also provided advice related to how my son could get help if necessary, including his personal e-mail in case my son wants to contact him. I was able to call early this morning and have the packet mailed to my son, to ease his stress just a little. I even got an expression of gratitude from my son over this, which unfortunately doesn’t happen that often these days. These acts of kindness from relative strangers are awesome!

jym626, after reading your post, I wish I could hit a “like” button. If we had that option there would be a lot of Likes posted on the contributions in this thread. Love to read that you helped a former student land a J-O-B.

Thanks, Faline. Have to admit that was really rewarding.

I have been on both the giving and receiving end of cc kindness. This is truly a wonderful community. We may experience some skirmishes here from time to time, but for the mostpart this is an incredible network of folks.

keeping my fingers crossed – I guess if it works I will save in on a word document titled "CC for Idiots’

HUGE shout out to Boysx3 who is in loco parentis for my S1, who is in the hospital in her city.

CC is one of the best sources of everything important in my life.

Edited to add: Change that: CC is THE best source for everything important in my life. You guys are the best.

VeryHappy, hope your son is okay! It is a comfort to have a cc friend to check in on him!

Two stories, one college-related, one not:

After posting in the Musical Theater forum about two acceptances D was having a hard time choosing between, I was contacted by a student at one of the colleges. Turned out she had been faced with the same options the previous year and explained how she had made her decision. The two girls communicated, and when D attended accepted students day, which had no overnight component, the girl graciously allowed D to stay in her room so she wouldn’t have to pay for a hotel. I think that positive experience was a big element in D’s ultimate decision to attend that school.

Just this week I posted a completely odd question about, of all things, what milk cartons looked like in NYC in 1990. I expected zero responses. Not only did I get a bunch of useful info, one poster actually sent a link to a 1990 Saturday Night Live skit where a carton of milk was on the table! Still haven’t figured out how he or she managed to come up with that.

Happy to check on your son, VeryHappy! And it was nice talking to you after.

I couldn’t even begin to detail how much help I’ve received since I stumbled onto this site several years ago (don’t remember how it even happened). Some of the people I’ve met here have become dear friends IRL. Students hosted my son at colleges, he hosted other people’s kids, I have felt my hand being held by caring people through stressful times and people even responding to trivial questions almost immediately.

Like Bunsen, I’ve gotten lots of great tips here…and my family does tease me about my CC life. Also commiserated/kept updates with a few when our kids were stranded in London’s snowstorm in 2010. I’d also send a big shout out to MOWC, who provided great advice, calming words and a few contacts…

I have picked up so much useful information over the years…college related, medical, home fix-it, you name it. This place is a marvel.

A big shout out has to go to the parents, medical students and young docs on the Pre-Medical threads. Some of the posters have become as expert in the how-to’s of applying to med school as any college counselor and it isn’t just about themselves or their kids…they want everyone to succeed. There are a handful of current medical students and young docs in residency who feel that they were helped by the board and come back when they can to share their wisdom. That they take the time just blows me away.

I believe that the advice of Bluedevilmike was a determining factor in DD’s acceptance to her first choice med school. (Thanks again, BDM!) It is a small group but the regulars are very knowledgeable and really want to help.

Endless advice, of course.

Two fellow CCers sent me a copy of their financial aid appeal letters when S12’s #1 choice FA gapped him a bit too much for us to handle. I used elements of both letters and one of the CCers helped me refine and edit the final product. S’ #1 choice matched a better offer and he’s a happy frosh there today.

(My screen name is new, I had a tech difficulty with my old one, but I’ve been around for a year or more).

OHMomof2, I wish there was a “like” button on cc.

This may sound mundane, but I am so appreciative of the NY/CT travel advice that I have received from numerous CC posters over the years. It always helped in getting D back and forth to New Haven from various airports during her 4 years there.

Nothing like a little local knowledge to help out the uninformed traveler.

I’m so impressed with all of this posts! Wow–and I thought this place was just a nice way to get a little help on the side with my son’s college search and application process!!!
