The Power of Focus

I’m reading the college student version.

My dad said experience can only get you so far. You have to be intelligent and innovative.

So I don’t know if they will let me work and study abroad or anything in college… because according to them, all you need is intelligence.

If you’re not white and you don’t have intelligence, just do medical field.

I don’t like how they view life. They view life as “do this, do this, do this”… Life to me should be “I want to do this, so let’s go and do it!”

This is why I wanted to go someplace on full scholarship. So I could do what I think is right. But now that’s not how it is. How am I going to be happy?

“If you’re not white and you don’t have intelligence, just do medical field”

I pity everyone in the medical field for being dumb and maybe even off-white.

You need a fat liberal arts education  I think you should first figure out why Dad has these sentiments. Address his concerns and let him know that all will pan out well - only if you believe that it will too.

Tell him exactly how you feel and to get to him, you’ll probably need to talk to him like he’s a baby. Let him know that you’re in control about your “fate” because it seems like he has insecurity issues about your future.

so your dad is saying your not intelligent?

and I don’t get what these people your speaking to are saying about the medical field. I mean it sounds kind of stupid to tell someone “if your not white or intelligent go into medicine.” If that were the case I’m sure a lot of people would be practicing medicine right now.

Anyways I don’t see why not getting the full scholarship is stopping you from doing what you want to do. Don’t let money get in the way of the things you want. If it costs more then go ahead and do it. Your going to college to get a degree that will hopefully get you a decent good paying job after you graduate, primarily anyways. Worse thing to have are regrets in life.

I was commuting last semester. It cost me more money to dorm but I’m doing it now. Of course I hate it now but that’s for other reasons. At least I don’t have to wonder what could have been had I never taken the chance to dorm. So if it costs more to study abroad then go ahead and do it, because you’ll never know what you’ll get out of it.

And there was an interesting article I read recently about how an attitude can shape the way one succeeds. For example, you dad says that intelligence comes naturally. You feel you aren’t intelligent for whatever reason and because intelligence is something that is natural you feel there is nothing you can do to improve on your intelligence. You give up. However if you believe that intelligence is something that can be acquired you will motivate yourself to do better because you see that you can improve. The article goes on to further talk about how this is why a lot of people with great potential never get to reach it, because even though they have this great gift (whether it’s intelligence or playing a sport or whatever) they feel they can’t really work on it to make it better, it’s just something that comes natural. I’ll see if I can find the name of the article, magazine or author that published it.

I hate it when people say some things are unattainable. You can do whatever you want. Nothing is unattainable. Don’t want to sound a bit “starry-eyed”… er herm. But you can do whatever you set your heart and mind on.

The fact that your Dad is limiting and even undermining what you are and what you can become is a shocking reality kids face. Maybe show this thread to your Dad.

So I just got my 2nd Pokemon gym badge. I’m thinking about not going to meet my proffessor at class today…maybe I’ll meat Prof. Rowand and Oak instead.

^do you ever make on topic posts?

Back on topic…

What you really need to succeed in the world is common sense and a good gut. Listen to your gut and do what makes the most sense and you’ll be fine. Lots of people with low intelligence are suceeding because of this–I know of a guy who’s making $50K a year with just a GED, for example–and he’s still got room for promotion.

And to the guy who remarked about Pokeymon–it won’t get you anywhere. Watch the South Park episode about it (it’s called Chinpokeymon), you’ll see what I mean.
