The Random Questions thread

Anyone have any leads on a summer sublet in midtown Manhattan? If so, please DM. My daughter and a friend have internships and need a reasonably priced place to stay. They are non-smokers and very clean and responsible.

Hmom16- no help here but hope they find something.

QUESTION: someone sideswiped my car, did damage, and left their name and number. I’ve called and talked to a really older gentleman once; he said he’d call back because he was sleeping; but he hasn’t. Damage is worth $2K; i’ve had two places check it out.

what should i do?? police say i can’t file a report because it’s civil and i have his name. should i call him again? have insurance find him? sort of lost here; would love thoughts on how to move forward.

Report to your insurance.

^^ do you think my insurance can try to get ahold of this guy? would it count as a ding against us? thanks for your thoughts.

It depends if you live in a no fault insurance state @bgbg4us. In our last state, I was hit in the parking lot of my daughter’s school, caught on the school’s surveillance video. The police tracked down the driver, and his insurance covered everything, no impact on my insurance at all.

A few months after we moved, my DH was side swiped by a drunk driver. We now live in a no fault state. Our insurance went up even though he wasn’t at all at fault.

My daughter was at fault for a scrape and ours did not go up. In another instance, someone else totalled our car, no change. I sideswiped someone, left my info, weeks later she called back. We exchanged insurance info and again, no penalty increase. Depends.

But if you’re thinking you can skip this question by getting an older guy to write you a check, at this point, I wonder if it’s worth you trying to fill the ins company’s shoes. They go after folks all the time, have access to various records and more.

@bgbg4us I’d call the guy back again. If he was sleeping, he may not have copied down your information correctly.

What inside antenna attached to your tv do you like that gets local air channels? Not wanting to spend a lot.

I think I spent $20 and mine’s an “Insignia,” from Best Buy. My local BB has better trained staff than in the past. How much you need to spend is a factor of how far you are from the towers.

Frankly, I find I rarely use it. I’m on Sling and already get one local in my service area, no antenna needed. You want to check what does come through without the antenna. There’s some chart online, by zip code or metro area. Some cities get them all.

Onebyone is what we got from Amazon. $25 or so. Works just fine.

So, do you just hang these on your wall? Don’t they look ugly?

Mine lays on a shelf under the tv, with other connection gear. Imperfect solution.
Dos, these are smallish flat units.

Need suggestions please for a gift for a friend’s daughter who just graduated from law school. Ideas?

@jym626, are you sending this to my D2? She would love a gift card for a manicure, a restaurant, or a Bed Bath and Beyond type of place. Thanks, you are so thoughtful.

Our antennas are hanging on the back of our TVs (we can see the lights at the tops of the transmission towers… the signal is good here).

LOL, @Nrdsb4 ! Give me her address and I’ll send her one too!!

@jym626, as part of her dual program (JD/MBA), she still has a year for the MBA degree. I’ll give you a rain check for next year.

Jym, very few law school grads come out of the last finals with a fat bank account and a closet full of professional attire. I recommend a practical gift. A gift card to some store like Nordstrom, Brooks Bros, Zappos/Amazon, or anything where a newly minted lawyer can get things to update their work wardrobe would be appreciated.

^^^^Good point about the clothes. My D just graduated from a school where the last year is mostly about litigation and they make many appearances “in court,” so they have to have professional attire. D2 said a lot of her classmates could only afford one outfit, which they wore over and over. They will need to add to that at their new jobs. Since D2 won’t be starting a job yet, that idea didn’t occur to me, but it’s a really good one.

For females, Ann Taylor is where my niece bought a lot of her courtroom outfits. When you catch a sale, prices are not bad.

Macy’s has some suits and blazers that work well and with sales and coupons can be quite reasonable as well.
