Thanks everyone. This student may have different tastes in department stores, so I might be a little hesitant to risk that.
Old Navy or Gap could work for plain pants, shirts. Banana Republic and Anne Taylor Loft are also good places.
When we want to give a gift card, but are unsure about the specific places liked - or don’t have any of the known favorites around us because they’re local or whatever - we always “print” one out and wrap it around a check or $$. It will say something like this:
Gift Certificate* to Your Favorite Restaurant or Food Truck (with some food choices pictured on it)
*It might look like an ordinary $50 (or whatever), but that’s just what you are seeing. Take it to your favorite place to enjoy a free meal (or two) on us. You’ll see that it works.
My antenna is flat and smaller than an 8 1/2x11" piece of paper. It looks lovely to me compared to a DirecTV bill of $150/month for a bunch of channels we didn’t watch.
I’m really bummed about the college D’s wardrobe. We spent the last 3 years acquiring professional outfits. I thought we did really well. Turns out she’s joining the tax department in a Big 4 firm and they wear jeans most of the time. Sigh…
It’s very sweet that you’re thinking so hard about what to gift this new graduate. Sadly, I can’t remember if I got any gifts for graduating from law school–I rather doubt that I did. I don’t remember any for passing the bar exam either.
If the kid is going into IP law in a tech hub like SV or Seattle - business casual is what they all wear when their jeans are all in the wash.
If they are going into a more traditional law firm or clerking for a judge or something like that… then they have to look more presentable.
The biggest thing most new law grads can need is more time. We don’t know if this one is going into a high paid position or not, what role or location. A sweet personal gift can be meaningful.
What to do about dog nails scratching wood floors . Large dog. Had her groomed- nails cut and dremelled. But the front nails still ‘click’ on the floor. The back ones are plenty short from our 4 mile walks daily. I think it is the way she walks and the legs are longer in the front than the back. For 2 months now we are careflully cutting or dremelling weekly to hope the quick moves back. Not sure it has, she has black nails. Have tried oil on them to tell. Have only needed to use styptic on three occasions.
We are going to visit someone with wood floors and this makes me nervous. I read about the nail caps but we walk a lot on the road, so think it would wear down. Thought about nail socks or boots. Any suggestions or experience with these?
My old dog kept the booties on for about 6 seconds. YMMV.
RMH, do you have floor damage now or some reason to expect it? Many floors now have coatings that resist dog nail scratches. I’d find a way to ask your hosts is they have any concerns.
Yes we did have plenty of scratches before we realized it. It started when she reached 50 lbs (she is 70 lbs). Still hear the ticking sound from the front feet (I put blue paint tape on her to locate the responsible paws). We are going to have to refinish our floor eventually. D is refinishing her floor this summer and I really don’t want to ruin it. I just ordered paw pads and see if that will go over the nails temporarily for when we are indoors at her place. I will try them at home first.
Random question: If Soy milk and other similar products can’t call themselves milk, why can manufacturers claim products are made from “vegan leather”. Maybe the dairy industry needs to give some lessons to the rest of the cow product vendors.
Never heard of that, jym. Maybe they mean you can’t call it dairy milk.
I think just the word “milk” still includs the alternate generic definition: " : a food product produced from seeds or fruit that resembles and is used similarly to cow’s milk coconut milk soy milk."
IIRC, Silk had to rebrand itself and take the word “milk” that was in big letters off its cartons. Maybe its not in effect yet? https://www.forbes.com/sites/nicksibilla/2019/01/31/fda-crackdown-on-calling-almond-milk-milk-could-violate-the-first-amendment/
(ETA - looked in the fridge- mine just says “Silk - almond”. The “almond milk” is now in small letters at the bottom). e.g:
example of old packaging: https://www.amazon.com/Silk-Vanilla-Almond-Milk-Fl/dp/B07PSQ51FD/ref=asc_df_B07PSQ51FD/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=343950603487&hvpos=1o4&hvnetw=g&hvrand=8882553638451628309&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=t&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9010794&hvtargid=pla-782692273167&psc=1&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=76048402064&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvadid=343950603487&hvpos=1o4&hvnetw=g&hvrand=8882553638451628309&hvqmt=&hvdev=t&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9010794&hvtargid=pla-782692273167
So back to the random question-- vegan leather? That’s an oxymoron!! Toyota calls their pleather “softex”.
Nothing compares to the plush “Corinthian leather” found in a 1975 Chrysler “Córdoba”

CC question.
When looking at a forum page on your mobile app - are the same threads ordered on the page for every user?
Does clearing the number of unread posts to zero by scrolling to the end move them lower in the queue?
Or is it the number of views or active responses that reorders the view ?
“Almond milk” states the source of the product on the face - “almond.” Vegan leather tells nothing about the actual materials used in the making of the product. In fact, “vegan” implies that it is plant-derived. We can debate whether the oil which was used to make the chemicals which were used synthetic materials is plant-derived… I am sure there were a few dinosaurs mixed in it. ? So to me, vegan leather is a misleading description. Almond milk is not!
Not sure about the app, but on CC mobile site (which is what I am on) the thread only moves up if a new post appears after the last screen refresh.
Saw an ad for “Silk” on tv last night. Could not see the word “milk” on the front of the carton. But it looks like they are still fighting it out in court https://www.forbes.com/sites/nicksibilla/2019/01/31/fda-crackdown-on-calling-almond-milk-milk-could-violate-the-first-amendment/#5d0313f37b70
This wasn’t the commercial I saw, but is another by Silk https://www.ispot.tv/ad/IOzk/silk-almond-dont-stop-me-now#. I tried to stop the video/do a freezeframe when the cartons were shown- couldn’t see the word “milk”. Can anyone find it?
