They came yesterday but I haven’t used them yet! They seem a nice weight and sturdy. While I cook a lot, I’m not one to over research or over spend on some cooking utensils - I’m good with a mid-range product.
Greek mythology!
Why is it called a mailer daemon? The name comes from Greek mythology, where a daemon was a benevolent but unseen spirit. In computer jargon, a “daemon” is simply an unattended software program that runs in the background. So the mailer daemon is the program that is responsible for delivering your emails – it also goes by the more humdrum name of “mail delivery subsystem.”
I put the socks in the mesh laundry bag!
They’re quite harmless, and easy to train. I’ve had a couple of them myself
There are many of these interesting references floating around operating systems, Unix especially. The “charon” daemon, for example, was named for the son of Erebus and Nyx whose duty it was to ferry souls over the River Styx. The job of this daemon was to communicate (ferry) between other programs.
Programmers crack themselves up.
And Kerberos - the network authentication protocol that protects communication over an unsecured line. Named after Hades’ three headed dog that guards the gates of the Underworld.
We could spend all day educating CCers on the history of Unix commands and utilities, but I suspect the interest would be small.
Yes of course. But I always thought that was a clever name, so couldn’t help myself
This.
The other day, our son popped all the key caps off DH’s filthy keyboard, put them in one of my smaller mesh bags, and ran the bag and keyboard through the dishwasher. Who knew?
(Just make sure the keyboard is BONE dry before plugging it in.)
How do you make sure the keyboard is bone dry??
(ETA: Sounds like the start of a riddle.)
We’re in AZ. Anything left in the sun more than 20 minutes is bone dry.
Seriously, though, dry it off externally, then leave it upside down on a towel in a warm spot for a couple of days. This not a method to use for a generally-dirty keyboard that you would just blow out and wipe with a damp cloth. In this case, the keyboard was an old favorite that DH was complaining didn’t work well anymore (sticking keys, etc). DS knew what to do. DH is happy again.
ETA: Also, don’t use soap in the dishwasher run, water only. Scrub the keyboard prior with water and a small scrub brush to get most of the gunk off. But, really, don’t do this unless the keyboard is so bad it’s ready to be tossed.
Also maybe snap a photo of the keyboard prior to popping any keys off, so you’re not left to second-guess, is it zx… or xz…?
I wonder what’s wrong with Kate Middleton. I sure hope everything is okay.
Wrong thread???
Random question: Who has washed their washable rugs?
Washable rugs are everywhere online and in stores. I have a few - and have washed a few smaller ones (entry way for instance) no problem. They wash and dry nice.
But how do you handle larger ones??? I mean you can get 8 x 10 rugs but are they fitting in your washing machine? Do you take them to a laundromat with a commercial sized washer?
I have one in my kitchen that is probably 4 x 6? I haven’t had to wash it yet. I’ve spot cleaned it and I shake it out a couple times a week or vacuum…but while I think it will fit in my washer…will it???
Curious.
I have a few Ruggables, mostly 2x3 but have a runner that’s pretty long and have no problem washing it. I have a top loader, no agitater and can wash a king comforter in it. I would think a 4x6 would surely fit but an 8x10 maybe use a commercial washer.
Just bought a 5X7 rug at Costco. It is pretty thin and compact when folded. I have a giant Miele washer that can handle king-size comforters with ease. Haven’t washed the rug yet, but it looks like it would absorb much less water than a comforter, so the washer shouldn’t be overloaded weight-wise.
Apple watch?
Wondered if anyone had a recommendation for a good version of the Apple Watch for safety and fitness tracking?
Husband is traveling a lot so I’m alone at home for a good bit - thinking if I fell or something might be good to have something close! Also trying to track sleep & various other fitness metrics…
Thanks for any thoughts!!
What do you mean by good version? Whatever the latest model (but not the super fancy one). If you are always in Wi-fi or have your phone near buy you don’t need the one with Cell service (though I enjoy that feature when get to run without the phone but it will cost you an additional $10-15 per month). I recently upgraded and opted for the larger one. I really enjoy the larger screen size, but other wize they are the same.
I think 9 is the latest. I got an 8, right before the 9 came out, because I was going on a trip and wanted it for the trip. I probably wouldn’t go lower than 8, but I have no real rationale for that.
