The Random Questions thread

The latest one.

Thanks for the feedback! I guess I was a little vague in my request! I was hoping not to spend the maximum money  but find one that was good at health tracking/had helpful safety features.

I’ll compare prices. Thanks!

Do you use other apple products? If you do I think the Apple Watch is a no brainer - if you want to save some $$ then see if you can find an older model - maybe 4 and up? I can’t remember what model mine is, it’s 3.5 years old?

You do want the model you get to still be supported by updates.

I just think it’s a fact that the Apple Watch does fitness stuff unless maybe you’re really hard core pretty well.

Minimal research indicates 3-5 years is how long Apple has been keeping the watches current with security upgrades, which are important.
You may already know this, but sometimes Costco runs sales including the Apple Watch.

Abasket & 1214mom - thank you! I do have an Apple iPhone and was just a little confused by the various iterations of watches! I appreciate the tip about how far back updates go - that will help inform how much I can economize! Also will check out Costco!

Speaking of Apple: I’ve never signed up to pay for its cloud storage but I’m considering it.

I do use Google Drive (free), and Amazon Prime’s “free” photo storage (free with Prime).

But I’m considering dumping Prime in March, as we really don’t use Prime enough to justify the cost (and it seems like every time we want to watch a movie, it is a rental cost anyway). Now that they’re gonna implement ads in their free offerings, I’ve gotten motivated to take action.

If we dump Prime, I need to move the photos off there before we do so.
Is there a free way to transfer from one cloud to another? I think I’ve read about some paid apps; not sure if they even work with Prime/iCloud.

Or do I have to manually babysit the process?

Prime gets you free Amazon shipping too, right? (Though I think you can get it also with minimum purchase amount, used to be $35).

Yeah, still $35 for free shipping. I would change my shopping habits and take advantage of that threshold if we dumped it.
I mean, it’s nice to just buy a five-dollar item on a whim and not worry about the shipping, but it’s certainly not essential.

In my experience it’s pretty hard to move photos from one cloud to another. I’ve tried to get relatively few off Shutterfly/snapfish and it’s very tedious. I have 10s of thousands on Amazon photos - enough since there’s videos too that I actually have to pay extra. I’d also like to dump prime at some point but I’m not sure I ever can due to the photo issue.

I have an apple 4 watch since 2018 and love it. I keep track of aerobic minutes, steps. H uses it to keep track of heart rate and A fib. While he has not had Afib, he does have tachycardia from dehydration at times and remedies it. I really have fallen a few times and it asks me if I want 911 called. The loud sound warning is also really nice when I am not aware the decibels are high.

I am almost never without my phone so I don’t pay extra per month. I have used the watch to answer phone calls (get smart style) when I could not get my phone out of my pocket.

So, when this one dies (battery still good), I’m getting the latest which is the 9. It has added crash detection and more cardiac monitoring.

Thanks, @rockymtnhigh2! I might have to save up for the latest - good to know it’s got crash detection!

Apple has pulled Series 9 and the Ultra 2 from Apple’s online store - you can google the ban (ordered by the International Trade Commission to stop selling them in the US).

I love my Apple Watch! We also got one for my brother after he had a stroke (he lives in another state, and he shares his activity with us so we know he’s alive!).

My husband keeps offering to buy me an Apple watch as gift. But… I actually like to remove my watch (and rings) before a run. My iphone 12 mini is my exercise workhorse - MapMyRun, Apple Health app (total step count), podcast via one wired earbud. I also enter food (for nutrition breakdown( and exercise into MyNetDiary. I certainly understand the appeal of “closing the rings” and wish he’d get one for himself, but I have system that suits me.

I hear you Colorado_mom! My phone has been totally adequate for a long time!

But with my hub now traveling a fair bit & daughter at college I had this picture of me falling down the steps and being alone for days with no way to call for help.

I realize that may be overly dramatic and quite unlikely but I’m always the one planning for worst case scenarios :joy:. Apple Watch seemed like a good solution lol

Acquaintance fell at home, could not move to reach phone in another room. Used his watch to call 911. He lived alone, no one checking him frequently.

H got me an Apple Watch 9 for Christmas. I think it was $329 and I don’t have a phone line for it as my phone is normally with me. It replaced my Fitbit which stopped working. I like the Apple watch so far.

According to a 2023 Popular Science DYI article you can use the Amazon Photos Desktop App to bulk move photos into and out of Amazon Photos. Move your digital photos between services without losing a pixel

Sounds like a good idea to have an apple watch for extra safety. Would you add cell service?

My husband’s bike computer has a crash-detection (unintentionally tested at the driveway when he had a fall due to snafu on new pedal clips). I think it somehow ties to his iphone.

Costco online has a decent selection, more band choices than the store. My husband bought a series 9 in December and we bought my daughter the SE. My watch is older and I have the SE and we are both happy with that model. It’s less expensive and it comes with a smaller size face option which I liked. It might be enough for you. None of us have the cellular model so your phone must be around but it’s not been a problem.

I’ll add that I do not have cell service…if I’m out for a longer walk or a run I just want my phone with me. That said, the range is decent where your watch will pick up a call or text even if your phone is not near. I can be out cutting the grass and a call or text will still come through on the watch.

The watch will also let you know when you are out of range of the phone - if I’m at work and decide to go for a mental break walk and leave my phone behind my watch will alert me at some point that I have left my phone behind.
