The Random Questions thread

Close the door of the room it’s in, open a window and remove screen if necessary, use curtains or shades to block out the non-open part and any other windows, and try to shoo it towards the window.

It will head for the light from the open window and fly out.

This happened to us a few years ago but the bird flew up to our third floor where we didn’t have a door. We opened all the windows and blocked the stairwell and it found its way out quickly.

Word of caution - tell your friend to make sure the windows get closed properly - our D didn’t close the sash all the way and a bat got in!

Great ideas. Thank you @notrichenough and @momofboiler1!

Are any of you in the intersection of dual cicadas this spring/summer? We are not. We’ve been pretty lucky. The last time we had them, we actually had very few on our property according to what we had been told to expect. And according to any maps I have seen, we won’t have any this year. Time will tell.

We are not. Thank goodness.

We are close-ish to where there is an intersection but really we’re just in one brood. They are pretty bad where my D lives (closer to the intersection) and I could hear them over the phone when we were talking last night when she was out for a walk. So far it’s not too bad by me (knock on wood).

New question.

Who has sold (or bought) on Thred Up? I was doing a quick browse because I got a coupon card randomly in the mail. I see for selling, you just send your stuff and they list it - you can get cash or credit when things sell. Need to look more to learn a little bit and I understand they must take a good cut but also it sure is tempting to just send a pile of stuff in!

We would have been if we hadn’t moved nine years ago! Some of those cicadas are going to be surprised when they discover a much bigger house overhead. Also less trees. Sooooo happy not to be there! (Also, I don’t have to be interested in mosquito repellent in the outdoor thread.)

I have both bought and sold on thred up. It really depends on what you are selling. I send in about 25 items and make about $50, which I turn around and spend on thredup.

NYC / AIRPORT transportation advice? - Poughkeepsie… then Penn to Newark: 2part Amtrak ticket (familiar but limited; maybe pricey)? Or Amtrak to Penn (or possibly Metro to Grand Central) then NJ+Airtrain?

More Details: I am headed to Poughkeepsie for Father’s Day. Booked a Friday United one way into LGA with 1:30pm arrival, will take taxi (or maybe bus) to Grand Central… have done this before, and traffic is not bad mid day. Now researching for one way return flight Denver, Tues evening flight. I really don’t want to have rush hour traffic in the equation. Looking at Newark flights. On my last trip, I booked Amtrak to EWR … with layover at Penn/Moynihan. Easy peasy, BUT there are limited options… some with long wait. In theory I think I could walk over to Penn station and do NJ transit to Newark (several trains per hour) + AirTrain. But I’ve not done that before.

MetroNorth to Grand Central goes to Poughkeepsie, cheaper than Amtrak. And once you’re there, 4-5-6 trains go to the Oculus where you can take PATH to Newark. If there’s time and you’re over 60 (I think), you can apply for half-fare on NJ Transit and PATH. And 65-up you are eligible for half fare on NYC subways and buses.

Agree metro north will be cheaper and just as easy from Poughkeepsie. Not sure if there are more stops though.

It’s the same train station. And there are trains with more or fewer stops.

Thanks for the quick feedback! I’ve done Metro many times, comfortable with that. It does seem prices on Amtrak (a little nicer but less frequent) vary a lot… but nice to go right into Penn. When I did Amtrak Pok —> EWR in January (with a few days advance purchase), it was $77 total. Not bad in comparison to Metro + Taxi to LGA. Of course cheaper would be nice too, if not too much challenge on logistics.

I like the alternate suggestions. Rome2Rio suggests walking GC to Penn, 1.2 miles. I’m an avid walker, but I don’t want to do that with a backpack and rolling carry-on in NYC crowds and summer humidity. Taxi is a possibility, but I might not like the stress/expense of rush hour delays.

It’s been a long time since I’ve done NYC subway, but it was with others… and no luggage. I might try it if folks here think it is safe and manageable for a little old lady like me.

Subway is super easy and super safe in the middle of the day. If you have Apple Pay on your phone you can just use that at the turnstile - don’t even need to buy a metro card! I would always recommend the subway as by far the easiest transportation option in NY.

Thanks! Delighted to hear Apple Payworks at the turnstile.

Funny travel story: When a group of 6 of us visited Barcelona, on the first subway ride two of us goofed at the turnstile… lost a ticket (not expensive) by not pushing through fast enough. Yea, one was me. And that was without luggage.

More detail for those who don’t already know about using Apple Pay / Wallet for subway in NYC (and elsewhere)

Video reminds to “Enable Express Transit” in wallet. Here are steps I used to verify.

I am an old lady myself but not so little (76 next week; shrunk from 5’10 to around 5’6). I use the subway all the time. Virtually all air conditioned cars, and the platform for 4-5-6 at Grand Central actually has air conditioning units. A zillion elevators and escalators. There are commercial airport buses across the street. For what it’s worth, you can take 7 train to 5-6th Ave and take the F train to Jackson Heights where there’s a bus that stops at all the LaGuardia terminals. But you can google bus lines to La Guardia–not difficult! Cheaper and probably faster than a cab–buses can use HOV lanes.

I just changed my senior Metrocard to OMNI, the tap-to-pay system.

Thanks. I have used buses (pre-covid) for Grand Central/LGA and JFK. They worked pretty well mid-day. I do worry about rush hour factor for my evening flight options.

My concern on subway / commuter rail is that I’m just not a city kid. Don’t feel like I have good commuter instincts… will look vulnerable dragging a suitcase. But I have not ruled it out. In fact, I’m starting to see there are non-bus options to get to JFK too.

To Newark too!

I must say that New Yorkers have been incredibly helpful to me, especially when I was having breathing problems. Ordinary people carrying my granny cart up steps if elevators were (rarely) out of order. Almost always offers to help. I feel comfortable taking public transportation well into the night.
