If it’s my dog, I just stand at the top of the stairs with a can of whipped cream and dude is at my feet before I can say a word!!!
I sympathize, our 3 year old lab started about a year ago not wanting to go in the car. He is healthy, muscular and plays with no issues. He previously had no issues. We tried a lot of different incentives but nothing works. He no longer goes places with us as he prefers to
Stay home.
Can he see well? Is there a night light that comes on in the hall at night? if he can’t see well it could scare him.
Or perhaps (since he needs a running start anyway) does he have arthritis that kicks in at night? You could try some inexpensive stair treads to see if a better grip for him would help.
My thought was also the lack of light to see. I had one dog that was terrified of wooden steps, so would take him forever to get up the courage to go down; up was not a problem.
Poor pup and poor you!
Could it be something about his nighttime routine? So he is inside, upstairs all night and gets let out downstairs in the morning to attend to business??
…do you feel like he might need to go out at night but doesn’t have the opportunity? One thought is that he may be anxious because he has needed to go out but has been unable to. Has he been going out more than usual lately?
Just a thought…
Could there be shadows on the stairs at night that aren’t there during the day?
Hmm…. perhaps a high pitched tone (which may or may not be heard by humans) from AC, air purifier, etc?
@islandmama1 : Nothing in his going out routine has changed. He has a doggie door so he goes in and out at will; at 10:00-ish at night, we put the hard door in it so he doesn’t go out until 6:30 AM or so. But that’s nothing new.
@Colorado_mom : Nothing goes on at night that isn’t also on during the day.
@1214mom and @gouf78 and @snowball : You may be on to something. Tonight, I’m going to light up the stairs like an airport runway. We’ll see what happens.
How’d it go tonight @VeryHappy ?
I’m a big proponent of treats! Our dog is a super duper anxious rescue. She is terrified of so many things for no discernible reason. Treats have really helped her get through some of her fears.
Well, we didn’t do anything special, but he ran up the stairs with DH. He had stood at the bottom for a little bit and whined when I went up, so we were worried. But nope – he just ran up with DH. So I have no idea what’s going on!!!
Maybe he was waiting for your husband and didn’t want to go up without him?
Maybe put a rubber backed bathroom carpet at the bottom of the stairs to get the running start. That’s what we had to do in similar circumstances.
Also our dog won’t go up unless the last person (me or H) is up there, too.
What’s the best website to order (maybe discount) Broadway tix? (not last minute tix)
So last night again the dog went upstairs with no problem. So I guess I’ll relax now. Thank you for all your suggestions.
Dog is on to you. I can hear it saying “rut roh, they’re on CC asking for ideas, I better stop tormenting them and just go upstairs!”
Hey, @JustaMom – whatever works!! Last night was no problem either. I have no idea what was going on the night he wouldn’t go upstairs.
Hi - random car buying question that doesn’t fit the specific threads…
Does one really have to buy certain new cars without taking a test drive or possibly even seeing one in person? Son is considering a new Toyota Corolla hybrid and all of his area dealerships says they have none; everything coming in is already purchased. Son can’t even find one to rent and try.
I bought a Tesla model 3 when they were new and there were none to test drive.
It’s a gamble. I think I’d at the very least I want to know the drivers seat comfort, height, etc. I’m short at just 5’2" so being able to sit comfortably and see is important to me. My friend is 6’4" and they say that would be important for them too.
No Turo within 100 miles that you S could rent?
He’s off to a dealership appointment today and should be able at a minimum to sit in a used hybrid Corolla and a new regular model, both of which they have on the lot. So hopefully that will give him a feel for the comfort, visibility, and dashboard functions (or whatever they’re called now). Husband and I are shaking our heads on how much things have changed. My last new car (CRV) was seven years ago.
Admittedly we actually offered for our current house without setting foot in it. We did visit during the escrow period!
