The Random Questions thread

I have thought about a password protector app. But in recent years I’ve not done anything because things have been easier with face id, and the more important accounts have 2-factor protections. I’d be interested in hearing feedback / success stories from those who use password protector apps.

iPhone passwords app. Very convenient - works on your phone, MacBook (if you have one, including on Chrome)

Just a thought on 2 factor, and hopefully this will not be a concern for many. Before my husband died, I was able to go through all his accounts and apps to get the passwords. He used a coded system for his passwords and kept them in his contacts; each number was assigned a letter. The kids and I knew this code, so we were able to get into almost all account prior to his death.

There were a few logins that I was not able to get into as I didn’t know about them until months later; at this point, I had cancelled his phone thinking I had already logged into all accounts. Just took some extra time, and these were non important accounts, but just something to think about. Keep a list of which account have 2 factor in the event someone else needs to get into the account for you, or if you change your phone number.

I just discovered that the photos on my iPhone supposedly are a smaller file size (MP), than what is stored in the cloud? In the past, I’ve simply downloaded and filed photos on my own, when my cloud storage reached capacity. But I downloaded directly from my phone rather than from the “cloud”, then removed them from the phone (I prefer to store on (2) remote hard-drives rather than “in the cloud”). BUT… I had no clue they were actually a smaller file size! Is that something new with iPhone storage?

Thanks for that info a few months ago. Airpod as hearing aid sounds interesting.

Wondering if anybody has new Airpods as holiday gift (or other purchase) and could offer feedback. If better, I could start a new thread.

I bought a pair of Airpod Pro 2 because they were in Black Friday sale. When I learned they could be used as a hearing aid, I gave them to H and he wore them for a few days. I think he found them ok (or he wouldn’t have worn). Not sure why he stopped wearing them. I will try to ask.

I bought the new AirPod Pro 2 because my old AirPods developed a lot of static. I had the old ones for a fairly long time and used them a lot so I didn’t mind spending $s for the upgrade. Hopefully these will have a long “Apple” life.

My husband loves his and says the noise canceling is better than his old ones. He noticed a lot of improvement when he mowed the lawn and used the leaf blower.

My H isn’t used to having anything in his ears so we will see how he adapts to them. D helped swap the earpieces that came with the AirPods for smaller ones that fit better. It’s still early, so we will see how much H uses the AirPods.

If you’re looking for advice about things like AirPods, within our family 4 new Shokz OpenRun pro2 minis were purchased. 3 people love theirs. I haven’t tried mine, but they were recommended to us on a bike trip. My son and his wife knew about them too.

Random question.

H is having a “meniscus snip” - this is how he constantly refers to it and it is a procedure he had years ago on the other knee. I was not able to go to his doc appts to get more info. In fact, I was STUNNED when he came home from his appt with the doc earlier this week just before scheduling the procedure and H had asked basically no questions! No idea where he would have it. No questions to doc about recovery or what he would need after. No details about how long the procedure would take or what we would need to plan for that day. I would have been the 20 questions lady!

ANYWAY……the procedure is currently scheduled for March 12. I am scheduled to take an out of town work trip 6-7 days later. While I’m going to have him call the doc office back and ask these questions specifically….will he be ok to be on his own 6 days later? Will he need walking assistance beyond maybe a cane or something by then to keep off the knee? Will he be able to drive by then??

We are starting to think maybe he should reschedule. We have a dog who will need to be attended to but he can let the dog in the yard and my S/DIL can probably come once a day and walk him.

I just feel like we are cutting it too close. It’s annoying that in January that is the “soonest” date they had - we figured we’d be in the clear. The work trip is important and I would hate to miss it - nor do I want to leave and feel worried about him. He can pretty much “live” on the main level of our house and only needs to go down one step outside to get to pavement.

Just thought I’d ask the bee hive before I really push him to see if he can get something sooner somehow or delay until I get back.

I think it’s a good idea to have those Qs asked. My H had challenges when he had any surgery to his knee. Knees are delicate, especially as we get older. Sorry, I don’t have answers but I’d be nervous being away when my H has had any procedure that may impair him for any length of time. YMMV.

I’ll add that oddly neither of us can remember much about his recovery when he had the first knee done in 2012.

This procedure is one of the least invasive procedures done on a knee.

Just saying, he would have been 13 years younger in 2012. As we get older, recoveries tend to be slower and more challenging. I’d ask the surgeon.

Can he reach out to the surgeon and ask for a copy of post op instructions? I’m sure there is a PDF of those in their system. I’d hate to give you any recommendations based on our experience because Mr. B was much younger when he had his knee meniscus repaired, and he healed quickly despite ignoring all PT exercises.

If this is the meniscus removal (and not the repair), then it’s what I had in 2017. I ditched the crutches the first day and just hobbled around. The second day (at night) I went to outlets for Black Friday shopping. Granted, this was NOT fun. I walked very very slowly and basically was the person who stood in line while others shopped.

If I had had a cane, that would have been good because others would have given me more space. I could walk in straight lines. Pivoting is what you do NOT want to do. I had to be super careful for a long time not to plant & pivot. Getting out of the car and also unloading the dishwasher were the two biggest activities that I had to look out for.

I had the surgery on Wednesday and was back at work (at my desk job) by Monday. Thursday & Friday were holidays. I think they wanted me walking ASAP, and I want to say I walked my first mile after 1 week? After 2 weeks, I got my stitches out and I started stationary biking. I know people who started back running very early, but I waited until I was 6+ weeks out.

After 6 weeks we went to Mexico where I went upside down ziplining and horse back riding with full support from the surgeon. Aside from being careful not to plant & pivot (i.e. getting on the horse), I was 100% fine.

I don’t believe i took any of the pain pills. Maybe I took the first one because I thought i was supposed to.

I was 45 years old and in good shape. I went to some physical therapy, but I don’t remember when it started and think it only lasted 6 weeks? I had some exercises do do at home starting on day 1. I still do one of them to this day!

Edit: the repair kind of surgery takes 3 months of no weight bearing for recovery…

Don’t worry we are going to def ask more questions - I think I said that from the beginning. Just looking for a little input perhaps to further convince myself that we should try and reschedule

Did he tear his meniscus? What is the reason for the surgery?

I had surgery for a torn meniscus in my left knee several years ago. The surgery took care of the pain, and recovery was minimal, BUT the “shaving” they did to remove some of the detritus in the joint changed the way the ball and socket fit, and my gait changed, not exactly a limp but a slight change to the way my knee bends that I’m often aware of and requires me to be more careful going down stairs.

Three years later, the meniscus in my right knee tore, but my current doctor advised physical therapy rather that surgery, and though that took a bit longer, the result was much better. He told me that meniscus surgery is one of the most unnecessary surgeries performed in the U.S. based on this article in the NEJM:

Arthroscopic partial meniscectomy is one of the most common orthopedic procedures, yet rigorous evidence of its efficacy is lacking…

CONCLUSIONS

In this trial involving patients without knee osteoarthritis but with symptoms of a degenerative medial meniscus tear, the outcomes after arthroscopic partial meniscectomy were no better than those after a sham surgical procedure.

You might want to get a second opinion. I would not opt for surgery if I didn’t have to. At the very least, you could try PT and have surgery later if the PT is ineffective.

(Apologies if this is not relevant to his situation. It’s just that every time I hear “meniscus,” I think of this.)

Appreciate your input.

He has been doing PT for 2-3 months with minimal improvement. Not enough though, similar to the other knee he had done in 2012.

He did have two docs look at it too! Both recommended this least invasive procedure which takes about 45 mins in the procedure start to finish . I did get that out of him!

So the procedure will happen, we just need to call and see if we can reschedule and be safe rather than sorry!

I am about to buy a leather sofa (better for cats and visiting dog) and I will need a chair too.
Question is - get the same style and leather chair, or get another style, and make it fabric.
I’m inclined to go with a fabric chair, because I think getting the same may be too “matchy matchy,” but I am not good with decorating, and I have commitment issues (my current matching leather sofa and chair are over 25 years old, and I will likely live with whatever I get for a very long time).
Thoughts?

We just got a new leather sofa and matching loveseat for our family room; we are awaiting a small (wall hugger) LazyBoy in a coordinating fabric (I hope!). Our previous set-up was a leather chair and ottoman and fabric couch and loveseat…
