If you are on Instagram, this guy posts weekly about home maintenance (for super beginners) in a very calm, accessible way. He talks about what you should do each season too.
On maintenance topic, I encourage homeowners to change their furnace filter on a regular basis (and leave a pen/paper there noting last change date… it can be hard to remember when last done).
We have a nice filter system, with jumbo accordian style filter and once let it go too long. Far too long - our summer visitors eventually fessed up that the guestroom was very hot (and the rest of the house a bit warm). It turned out the filter was really constrained, causing ice to build up in the AC unit.
We have one of those 4” thick air filters. Our boiler/AC guy told us when we moved in, that they were good for 6-12 months. Since we use the boiler in the winter, we let it go for 12 months. I write on all sides of the filter (with a black sharpie) the date I put it in, but I always try to install it close to 6-6 since that’s easy to remember. We moved in the end of May and the AC really gets going around that time. It’s never really that dirty when I change it, but figure once/year is good and easy to remember
My husband doesn’t change them as often as recommended. What he does do which is fun is he notes the date but also something that is going on in our lives. One year it was him guessing what our daughter would name her soon to be born baby,
We have a team cleaning our split A/C units. They charge more than competitors but seem MUCH more thorough. I’m pleased and they got rid of the irritating flapping noise in the master bedroom. They said it was mold in the wheel, causing it to spin unevenly. They bought the hydrokleen franchise and are very cheerful and thorough and don’t leave the floor all wet (unlike wife of installer who “cleaned” our units last year but never got rid of flapping noise and didn’t do nearly as thorough of a job).
Follow up: I got the copy of “Home Maintenance for Dummies” today and it’s just what I was looking for. D and I were discussing this a few weeks ago and I’m thinking of getting a copy for her.
DH and I would love to add whole-house humidification to the house. (Long, boring story as to why.) We just had one guy, from our heating company, tell us it was virtually impossible, because our AC stuff is in the attic, and you don’t want to put a water pipe in the attic because it’s not a question of if it will leak but when. So he said, within three minutes of coming in the house, that it can’t be done, we shouldn’t do it, and we should just set up individual humidifers wherever we want. (PITA.)
I have another guy coming to the house on Friday, from our AC installer.
Our house has heating units in the basement and the attic. Our attic one has a humidifier component, but TBH we don’t use it. Not even sure if we have to do something to provide water but there is a pipe t here, with a pan beneath it to catch any water.
How much do funerals typically cost? Cementary plots? My father is starting to ponder these things… a good thing, but I think he is going to have some sticker shock.
In-laws have already made arrangements with The Neptune Society for cremation for the cost-saving benefits and to save the family the hassle. Totally understand that some prefer burial to cremation for many legitimate reasons, but cremation can be magnitudes less expensive.
