I think that’s a pretty common thing. I have a couple that I bought many years ago. Have you checked Amazon or big box hardware stores? Maybe there’s a more modern version I’m not aware of?
We use Hue Smart Bulbs- they are slightly more expensive than a regular light bulb, but are controlled by an app on my iPhone. You can also change color on many of the bulbs. I have mine set to turn on at dusk and turn off at bedtime. You set it by the bulb, so each lamp is controlled individually. Amazon has a wide variety for sale.
We use smart plugs for a couple of lamps and the Alexa dot to turn them on and off. And I can set programs for when we travel. Alexa periodically offers to set up a program to turn them on at dusk.
Yes, +1 for Hue smart bulbs and smart plugs!
This is for a lamp. Something controlled by an app would be great because I don’t use Alexa.
Hue has its own app, but you’ll also need to buy a hub (just one - once you have that you can control all your Hue lights and smart switches). I don’t use Alexa either but you can also control these lights from the Google Home or Apple Home apps. You can also set a schedule to turn the light on and off automatically.
My husband has apps that control a lot of our lights but you can also just go old school and get a plug in timer. I think we have one of those on the water heater. My parents used to use them on lamps and the coffee percolator so the coffee would start up in the morning when they got out of bed. Here’s an Amazon link so you can see what they look like but your local hardware store should have them: https://www.amazon.com/G-Homa-Electric-Mechanical-Christmas-Decorations/dp/B094W2Q659/ I did a search on “plug in timer for lamps and appliances”. They have been around for 50 years or more probably.
We use the GE LED timer bulbs on our living room floor lamps. No app, just set it by turning on lamp at time you want it to come on each day and set for how many hours, I think the options are 2,4,6,8 hours.
You can get smart plugs from Gosund - you don’t need Alexa or Google to turn those on/off - you could use their own app. If you have either Alexa or Google home, the plugs integrate with those as well. We have several of these plugs around the house and H loves shouting at Alexa to turn things on and off ![]()
We are still old school for timer - outdoor grade, used it for outdoor christmas lights and indoor plant light. It plugs into outlet and then item(s) plug into it. Admittedly, tis a pain to reset the time each year via the mechanical dial.
We are old school also. My husband uses the ones that plug into the wall, and you plug what you want into the timer thing.
A lamp can be easily controlled by a plug in timer as others have mentioned. For a wired in fixture, it is either a smart bulb/app (pita, and the bulbs can be bigger than those that fit the fixture) or a wired in timer that replaces the switch. Leviton and Honeywell make these. Like this one:
We use GHome , and have been pleased so far. It must have a strong WIFI connection, however. On one of our trips, the set schedule stopped for some reason, but we were still able to control lights “manually” from 2400+ miles away. That was fun, but a bit of a pain being in a different time zone. Our assumption was that it was due to a temporary WIFI loss, but at least there was a work-around. It also offers flexibility.
We formerly used the old-fashioned plug ins, but unfortunately our neighborhood has occasional power outages. When that happens, that type of timer will be off by whatever length of time the power is out. No big deal if an hour or so, but totally odd timing if off by 6+ hours. We would then need to ask a friend to visit the home and reset all the timers. So far, the remote WIFI + APP system has been a much better system.
We have these on three light switches and can control them on the Google home app. Not sure how well it will work on a cruise though not sure about Internet or Wi-Fi Access.
We have these. They have a battery backup in case of power outages.
I’m not sure I pasted that correctly. Hopefully it works.

I was gifted a nice bottle of blueberry balsamic vinegar. ![]()
How would you use this item??? Need something beyond “on top of ice cream”. ![]()
@abasket - you can make a nice mocktail. I found a few simple recipes by googling.
I’d use it to make simple dressing for a spinach and berry and feta salad!
Both good ideas!! ^^^
