The Random Questions thread

I think I’ve asked this here before (a year or two ago) but I’ll ask it again: Does anyone use Consumer Cellular as their phone carrier?? I could save over $90 a month from our Verizon plan but I’m nervous about changing.

Why does Verizon have such a hold on us… I too worry about changing.

I have Att and also worry about changing

And a T-Mobile user who is hesitant to change. We have an older senior plan no longer offered. But it seems the only way to get upgraded phones is to switch plans every few years and become a ‘new’ customer with another company. There are no incentives to keep existing customers.

I don’t care about an upgraded phone every few years. I think the one I’m using now I got in 2018. All a new phone does for me is make me feel stupid.

So no one uses Consumer Cellular?

Don’t use Consumer Cellular. But I can identify with the reluctance to change cell phone carriers. We had a combined plan (including the kids) and didn’t make the move for several years even though we were paying quite a lot per month. The pain of coordinating with everyone and making the switch held us back. Finally got the switch done this past thanksgiving and I feel like I had a huge accomplishment!!

I can only speak as the person who paid the bills to Consumer Cellular. We got fed up with how much ATT was charging my MIL for her phone and made the change to Consumer Cellular. The monthly saving was substantial and they offered everything she needed. I wasn’t her primary caregiver but never heard any complaints about the service. I paid all her bills/managed the account and never had a problem with them. ATT, on the other hand, had some of the worst customer service I’ve ever experienced.

We have 2 55+ lines — S&H and me and D. It used to be $60 for 2 lines but price has crept up and is $80 for 2 lines. So far we are happy and haven’t tried to switch, even though no free phones. We don’t want to prepay with a debit card nor give them access to our checking account.

After much research, son (long term Verizon user), just switched to Visible. I believe he’s saving $40/month. He buys new phones separately, not through the provider.

I bought my last phone at Costco. The vendor there is from AT&T. I am a Pixel user but they have Samsung and iPhones too. I saved a lot and got a $100 (I think) Costco shop card after a month.

@arisamp : Why do you say “don’t use Consumer Cellular”?

I think there is an implied “I” at the start of that statement.

There’s a subreddit for Consumer Cellular and i notice a large number of complaints.

I’ve had Verizon for 30 (?) years. The girls are still on our plan, so we benefit from the number of lines. It’s the only provider with good reception at our second home, so changing is not an option. My SIL and her husband went on T-Mobile and find it’s ok.

I don’t want to upgrade a phone every few years either. Mine is about 9 years old now  Problem is the iOS will no longer update, so the APPS I use no longer work. However, I DO like TMobile customer service (at the local stores). I can’t think of any time they failed to help me, and always patient. I also like the included coverage in most EU countries, CA & Mexico.

I just wish they would occasionally “reward” long-term customers with a break on upgrading phones - rather than only offering breaks for new customers, or new lines. Wishful thinking, I know.

I am not sure, but I believe I saw an ad for Verizon stating that deals are for new and existing customers. Perhaps TMobile would agree to match it. Plus unlocked phones are always available on Amazon and sites that sell refurbished phones.

Customer service can vary by location. I needed a new phone recently and went to my nearest AT &T store ( we have had AT &T forever). The store manager and the other guy in there were fantastic. Very knowledgeable, helpful, and nice. They have a lot of 5 star reviews.

COVID Tests - An older relative tests positive. Wondering if it could be still reflecting their October Covid case? (which thankfully was not too bad… so hoping that bodes well if it is a new infection)

You mean they had Covid in October and tested positive and now they are testing positive again? Do they have a reliable test (like one NOT from 2020)??

If the control line was positive and the test line was positive, I’d be thinking they have a new case of covid, but they can ask for PCR test to confirm and ask for treatment to hopefully reduce risk of long covid.
