The Random Questions thread

Note that the article states that the virus has been inactivated so was no longer infectious. One possible explanation is that they needed these samples for some research purposes and couldn’t get approval of some sort so decided to just bring the samples back. Very stupid!! And lying to the CBP is a big no-no! Hope there will be an update as this case unfolds.

This article has some more details and explanations of what the samples were intended for:

Thanks. That’s an enlightening article.

Random question. Subject: :cucumber: cucumbers!

I haven’t bought a “regular” cucumber in years. Also have sworn off the long English cucumbers.

I love, love the small cocktail cucumbers or the cucumbers used for pickles. All raw.

What I do not like is that they go bad so quickly!

Seems just a few days in the refrigerator and they get mushy - have tried counter storage but doesn’t seem to help.

I’ve washed , dried and pre-sliced putting them in a container maybe with some paper towels. Still get mushy!

Any storage tips. I don’t expect them to last 2 weeks but more than 3 days!

Peel (if desired), slice, and dress with oil and vinegar, Italian dressing, or whatever.

That’s called a salad - which I love , but I want to keep them “undressed” for various purposes including that is the only way H will eat them.

You could use vinegar or oil and rinse them off when serving your husband.

I usually wrap them whole in a paper towel and put them in a plastic bag but I don’t know how much it really extends their life. I also feel like they get mushy quickly. It’s one of the vegetables we eat quickly after purchase.

I promise, he will know and that won’t work! This man uses no condiments beyond ketchup and zero salad dressing to “wet” toppings. But he will eat this type of cucumber!

I guess you or he need to buy it the day he wants to eat it. Oh well.

I store cucumbers and other fridge-storable veggies in these green top Rubbermaid produce storage containers; they are awesome and do extend produce storage time significantly.

Have you stored fruit and veggies? I’d also like strawberries to be a little more cooperative

Yes, I wash and let drain and then cut the tops off strawberries and store them in these containers!

Are you storing them with ethylene-producing foods like tomatoes and apples? That will accelerate spoilage.

I don’t refrigerate tomatoes and apples are in another drawer. Only vegetables in the drawer I usually store them - sometimes I even keep them out of the veggie drawer whole in an open container. Any way, life seems only a few days.
We do try and eat them fast and I only buy a few at a time.

Have you tried these?? I find they really work! https://thebluapple.com/

I’ll check it out!

wrap them tightly in plastic wrap! It works. I don’t love plastic wrap, but since we started buying them from local farmers this way they last a lot longer than ones that aren’t wrapped.

Whole and not cut??

Generally cutting veggies (or fruit) greatly shortens their lifespan. I’ve only stored them whole when I try to keep as long as possible—NEVER cut them.
