The Random Questions thread

The only place I’ve been on that passport was to New Zealand in 2006. I don’t think that’s worth commemorating. I don’t think New Zealand will care. And I’ll remember that trip, given that I rarely leave the US.

{ETA: One might therefore ask why I need an up-to-date passport. Beats me. I just believe in being prepared!}

We like keeping our old expired passports. It has a partial history of places visited. Sadly, not all places stamp when you visit any more.

Write down the dates, scan the front page, and shred it if you don’t want to keep it. I will do this with mine.

We kept ours, including the girls’ young ones where they looked scruffy and dangerous (must have been middle school.) Luckily, TSA just chuckled. Unfortunately for the girls, they were stuck with the pics for 5 years.

@LBowie - I can attest to the hand sanitizer! We went through a lot of generic purell and a few microfiber cloths to scrub hundreds of drops of ponderosa pine sap off of D’s car. It was nice to use a plastic spatula and just scrape them off the glass parts.

i get why older teens can chose to not allow their parents see their doctor records, etc.

QUESTION: But why can’t a parent have access to those records from when that teen was a kid? anyone know?

I’m assuming that records ownership passes to the adult child when they become of age.

So … the internet is going crazy with praise for Jeopardy contestant Austin Rogers. Does anyone else think that he’s a smug, conceited, pretentious jerk? I can’t be the only one in the world who has a hard time even watching the show at the moment.

^^ Yes, that’s a perfect description of the guy. I was so hoping he was going to lose today when he didn’t have such a good start. His smug facial expression really bugs me!

Eventually his arrogant, unwise wagering will get the better of him. I’ve had enough of his antics.

He’s definitely getting noticed.

I realize the post is a month old, so please forgive me if you have resolved the issue of replacing your key fob. Have you tried a locksmith? Our locksmith provided a new key fob for my son’s car for $125 when the dealership wanted $400.

I want to buy an Airbake 9x13 cake pan. I have one from 30 years ago. There are 2 choices Natural or Ultra. Does anyone know the difference? ($14 versus $24 on Amazon).

@Madison85, do yourself a favor and buy a pair of magic line pans of that size (not necessarily from here):

and a set of magic cake strips of an appropriate length instead:

You can use the strips on a variety of cake pans.

Consolations, DH makes cakes for folks at work all the time and one of his colleagues mentioned a heating core that goes in the cake to help it cook thoroughly. Are there any you recommend?

I think if you have decent pans, you shouldn’t have issues, at least not in my experience. That assumes your oven doesn’t have big hot spots.

For large cake layers, I’ve seen flower nails recommended:

@CountingDown , I’ve never heard of using such a thing.

The “flower nail” doesn’t work for me. I got a cake leveler, instead.

A few weeks ago I had the issue with removing sticker glue from a stainless steel dish. I tried the nail polish remover. What ended up working? Using a stainless steel cleaner wipe. All those frustrations for nothing. Now it is shining like brand new.

I would much prefer using Magi-cake strips or the Rose Levy Beranbaum Heavenly cake strip for level cake layers rather than using the heating core. I’ve made some big cake layers (16") that have come out beautifully flat with the magi-cake strips.
