The Random Questions thread

I use it as a salad dressing. I combine it with some macadamia nut oil.

I love apple cider vinegar! I like Braggs but you can find less expensive brands including one at Trader Joe’s. Look for the vinegar that is cloudy. I use it in salad dressings. My basic go to is Apple cider vinegar and olive oil in a 1 to 2 part ratio. I add Dijon mustard, pepper and an turmeric. I sometimes add a small amount of maple syrup. You can also add any herbs you want depending on the flavor profile your looking for. I sometimes use stevia or no sweetener at all. I find honey a pain to work with. It doesn’t blend as easily and can leave a sticky mess on the counter.

But I’m seeing that the improvement in morning blood sugar level is when it’s taken before bedtime. Two studies in the journal, Diabetes Care:

“two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar before bed with a snack (one ounce of cheese), they had lower blood sugar levels the next morning, compared to when they ate the same bedtime snack paired with two tablespoons of water.”

Another study: “all three groups had better blood glucose readings when they consumed less than an ounce of apple cider vinegar with a high-carb meal (a white bagel with butter and orange juice), compared to when they the had the same meal and drank a placebo. People with pre-diabetes improved their blood glucose levels with vinegar by nearly half, while people with diabetes cut their blood glucose concentrations by 25%.”

That’s just for your consideration. I agree it’s tough to swallow, so to say.

My understanding is the Trader Joe’s ACV is pasteurized which would mean it doesn’t have the “mother” in it like Bragg’s and therefore would be missing some of the health benefits like probiotics. Supposedly the magic is in the “mother”.

A lot of detox recipes recommend a tablespoon or so in a glass of hot water with honey and cayenne. You can also add other spices like cinnamon, ginger, tumeric. It’s one of those things you get accustomed to after awhile.

@lookingforward I am assuming the diabetes care you refer to is in regards to Type2 diabetes. Type1 diabetics, once out of honeymoon phase, have a pancreas that no longer produces insulin. Therefore ACV combined with snacks would still require short acting insulin to cover what the pancreas should produce. And it is dangerous for Type1s to administer short acting insulin within 1-2 hours of their long acting insulin which is administered at bedtime as dangerous lows can occur while sleeping.

@doschicos thanks for the heads up on the TJ vinegar. I guess I’ll stick to the Bragg acv. Bragg’s also makes some apple cider vinegar drinks. I’ve never tried them nor looked at the label but might be worth looking into as a more palatable way of drinking vinegar. I’m odd in that as a kid I loved drinking pickle juice so ACV tastes good to me.
I think one thing to be aware of is that ACV can be hard on your teeth enamel.

Yes, ACV definitely needs to be well diluted. I need to go look at the Bragg’s drinks. Hadn’t heard of them.

Funny how popular pickle juice is these days, especially with endurance athletes like cyclists, runners. And now all kinds of pickle flavored products are hitting the shelves. I’ve even seen pickle juice popsicles.

Apologies, @4MyKidz
I know how serious diabetes is and should have made that distinction.
This is the link that mentions the tests

These were reported in Diabetes Care. I dont think they’re to be taken as advice for diabetics.

But folks should also familiarize themselves with side effects (some in the 1756 link.) On one hand, some are reported with much higher consumption. On the other, be savvy if you have a preexisting condition.

Thank you @lookingforward for clearing that up. My son is Type1 and I have Bragg’s ACV in the pantry  I bought it for me and weight loss, but is really nasty tasting! LOL!!!

Met Gala 2018- Frances McDormand

What does her dress reference? Tabloid Art Historian Twitter doesn’t seem to have the answer.

At the event, she said she’s a pagan. Is she wearing nature?

This has perplexed me the entire day. Please help.

She kind of looked like she jumped out of a Kehinde Wiley painting.

Oh my. I just googled it. Oh my.

Supposedly, the theme this year was, “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.” I just figured she was meant to be some sort of nature goddess.

So many of those dresses are not pretty, not even fun, to me. There’s nothing necessarily savvy or deep about a designer’s imagination, no vetting to see if they stayed on theme well.

Ya know?

Received an email (evite) to a Christening for a much younger cousin’s 2nd child, (husband’s second cousins). We live 1200 miles away and did not attend the wedding or the 1st child’s Christening or his 1st year birthday party. We sent gifts for the wedding, (no thank you received), gift for 1st child’s Christening, (thank you note was sent). Now the evite with the “click below” to send a gift. It is a link for an Amazon gift card. I must be getting old, but we don’t know these people and more than likely will only meet them if we attend a funeral for one of the older cousins. I am tempted not to even respond. Just seems so much like a ploy for gifts. Is this common in other families now with the evite and “click gift”?

Never seen an Evite with a gift link. Very tacky! I would ignore that link and send whatever gift I though would be appropriate.

Or just send a $10 gift card.

Yes, I finally just send a card. Period.
That is all that is necessary.

@JustaMom5465 - I’m late to the brown sugar party, but I’ve had a little gizmo called a sugar fairy or something like that, that you keep in the bag to keep the brown sugar soft. The bag should still be tightly sealed. It’s just a round piece of unglazed clay, like terra cotta. You soak it in water for a few minutes and put it in the bag. The retained moisture keeps the brown sugar soft. I’ve had mine for years. You could just use a broken piece of terra cotta though!

It’s just like this one except mine has the impression of a little fairy.

Anybody’s college student still looking for a summer internship?

And it’s paid!

I’m looking to buy solid color cloth tablecloths for an event and to use for future events for a nonprofit. Budget is tight so don’t want to spend a lot. Figured some here might have recommendations. Any online source you would recommend?
