The Rutgers Indecent, but the other way

I can see a 20 something girl thinking this is amusing, especially late at night when everything is more funny, but why would she not have hidden HER name with something like subject A or any other anonymizer?? Makes me think she never thought it would go far or wants publicity? And why not list the guys anonymously, heads cut out of photos, etc?

“Thing?” A young man killing himself is a “thing?”

What is your point? Why are you so angry that a young man taking his own life has gotten so much coverage?

In any case, no, one does not have to wonder. Luckily, no one connected with the Duke case has killed themselves. We never would have heard of the invasion of privacy at Rutgers if Tyler Clementi were still alive.

The invasion of privacy aspect is wrong in both cases. That one case lead to a suicide is what makes it of national interest. You really couldn’t figure that one out on your own?

This particular incident is getting a lot of news coverage also. As far as recourse for the men named in the “thesis,” most of the reports I’ve seen so far state that this is not a criminal case, but rather a potential civil case. This is in contrast to the Rutgers case, which has criminal ramifications. Every state has their own laws regarding privacy violations.

Well, I was almost starting to feel sorry for Karen in addition to the men she embarrassed, but I forgot that in America, all too often bad behavior brings major rewards. After the book, I guess we’ll get to see her in a reality show?

[BlogPost - Karen Owen’s Duke thesis may land her in a heap of trouble – and a lucrative book deal](http://voices.washingtonpost.com/blog-post/2010/10/karen_owens_duke_thesis_may_la.html)

Well, looking at up to 2 years in jail (and being classification as a sex offender) based upon whether a jury determines the taping person intended to arouse /gratify the sexual desires of any person seems a risky proposition.

I knew there had to be a thread about this powerpoint presentation here on CC!! I just couldnt find it!!

So, jym626–ain’t technology great? Why, when I was growing up a polaroid (and a poor tape recording) was about all you ever heard of/saw.

Kids! What’s the matter with kids today? Whey can’t they be like we were; perfect in every way? What’s the matter with kids today?

I think there might be a song in there!!

BTW – I just saw that the (now 17 yo) kid who plays Jake on *Two and A Half Men *will get $300,000 per episode with probably a minimum of 48 more episodes. Do the math.

Karen gets a book deal and maybe jail time for doing it and telling and “Jake” gets $14 million for play-acting the same thing. Double standard?

Okay, maybe I’m un PC but too bad for the boys. Yes, I’m sorry their shortcomings are out in the world for all to know about, but I’ll betcha 90% of those guys gave some play by play about their romp with her in the locker room. It probably included words like ho, slut, skank, among others that I can’t mention. So she happened to make light of her escapades and send it to a couple of friends. The way I see it her friends violated her trust. As for the guys, you reap what you sow.

I feel better.

I agree, GA2012MOM, the double standard is notable.

Don’t these Duke Lacrosse players ever… play lacrosse?

No, they just play.

So, GA2012MOM–you’d not have any sympathy for named females if it was a guy who did the powerpoint and was betrayed by his friends?

As I said, I know that there are women who do discuss their escapades and “satisfaction” ratings.

What about: You’ve come a long way, baby!

Don’t be changing the subject 07DAD. :)

Besides, can you see a Duke jock doing a power point? Yeah, right.

Did you ever move down here to Texas?

Well, maybe a different kind of “power point.” Or maybe a Brownie “point and shoot” camera, heh, heh!

This story bothers me too. For some reason it was the PowerPoint aspect. PowerPoint is a tool used for presentations and I can’t think of anyone going to all that trouble for a presentation for a few people. Usually a PowerPoint presentation is prepared for a somewhat large group. Think of all the time she spent working on this. It just seems like it was being created for an audience.

She says that wasn’t her intent and that it was only supposed to be seen by a few friends. In that case maybe she should have printed out copies and not emailed it to them. Sexual activity, whether it is the act itself or who gets to view it is supposed to be consensual. In this case the act was, the subsequent public broadcast was not. These guys have a right to be really mad and I would love to see any of them sue her. If some of them aren’t mad then that is OK too.

No, still doing the LD thing.

Karen is not going to jail for this incident. She might be sued in civil court, but jail, no.

And, with the prior publicity, going public on "doing "the Duke lacrosse team guys was a guaranteed 15 miutes of fame and possible book deal. Maybe not DWTS since you apparantly have to get pregnant and give birth, but some major media interest.

A reporter had a copy of it in her hands and showed that it was 42 pages long. I wonder if she spent that much time on any of her senior papers or research projects. Seems like she was very busy. Did the girl ever go to class?

No possible jail time in NC? Well:

Even a misdemeanor could have jail time.
