The Scandinavian Department.

What are your impressions of it?

In the far future - i.e. a decade or two from now - I might apply for its Graduate Studies program.

BTW, I checked ratemyprofessors and couldn’t find Karen Møller.

My impressions are that it’s very good, and that probalby won’t change in a few decades, but why worry now? Ratemyprofessors.com is often not as helpful as i would like it to be.

I took a folklore class with Prof. Lindow. It was excellent.

I was an undergrad in the Scandinavian department. I had an excellent time. I can’t speak for the grad experience, but the professors are wonderful. I don’t know much about Karen Moller’s research interests or anything, but she’s a hilarious person and really great to be around. She taught my course on Scandinavian history from 1600-1800 or something like that, and I thought it would be terrible. She made a really boring part of history seem interesting (I’m not really a history person).

Lindow is great, and so is Carol Clover. They are both fantastic.

The department is really small. When I graduated, I walked with two other people. If I had walked at the appropriate time (I went a semester early) I would have been alone. There are more grads than undergrads though. But just keep in mind that it’s tiny!!

That’s superb, FB. I know that Fru Møller currently teaches the undergrad Danish courses, and I now hope that she also does the upper division ones as well (AND continues to if I ever get there).

Yeah, I assume you guys talked about the historical accuracy of “Day of Wrath”, Drottning Kristina, and one of my personal heroes, Baron Holberg, among other things. When were you there, BTW?

I don’t mind the size; one gets to know his/her instructors better if the department is comparatively small, in any case.

But now that I think about it, if I’m accepted, I’ll probably be able to do only PhD work there; I’m eyeing Wisconsin-Madison for the (prerequisite) MA.

I’d prefer Washington-Seattle (for the MA); I’ve heard that not even Wisconsin’s best public transit systems can compete. I HATE cars.
