Hey - I’m interested in double majoring in journalism and history, as well as doing Gemstone. I actually applied as an international relations major to most of my other schools, but interestingly enough it doesn’t seem like UMCP has the equivalent (correct me if I’m wrong). I figured it would be easy to tailor the history degree to focus more on current affairs as well as throw in some econ/peace & conflict studies/etc. courses.

I know CP is a HUGE school and that I’m trying to juggle a ton of things! Will I get a lot of help from the advisors, especially in trying to do my history degree the way I want it? If advisors are anything like HS guidance counselers, I fear for my life! :P. I know this sounds anal, but I want to start tackling this four-year plan over the summer (I won’t be taking many CORE classes if any at all due to AP credits), because I feel like it’s going to be tough to organize.

Oh, please do try to tackle the four year plan over the summer. The advisors will love you for it.

I never go to my advisors because my major doesn’t require it but I heard a lot of them are *******s. Hopefully you have a good one. Don’t worry about figuring your plan out yet… go get drunk or do something fun. You have the first few months of school to finalize and submit the plan so don’t worry and it’s completely tentative… you don’t have to follow it at all.

actually hardtoimpress i’d recommend getting advising fairly soon once you get to school. journalism is a program with a lot of strict requirements. my boyfriend is a journalism/history major as well and he’s had to do a lot of planning to make sure he’ll graduate on time.

Ah, what a bummer. I wonder if maybe Gemstone on top of that would just be crazy.

advisors are dumb in general
They don’t know specific subjects that much to give you advice. They just want you to ‘take it slow’ and ‘stay in school’
like if you want to take 6,7 classes / semester, they’d say no immediately
