The Sing-Off!

Can they send both of these bottom groups home??? I wish…ugh

I just realized that I described Calle Sol as being in the bottom two on Monday. I guess it was wishful thinking. I’m not a fan.

Very glad the KY group is staying.

I missed some of the performances tonight, including Home Free. Of the ones I did see, I think I liked Streetcorner Renaissance and Vocal Play the best.

I miss the swan songs from previous years, when the group going home sang a farewell song. It was a classy way to end it.

I liked Street Corner Renaissance and the Filharmonics (sp?).

Husband watched for a few minutes, but left, saying he hated the show. For some reason, this show seems to elicit strong opinions.

I didn’t enjoy the show nearly as much tonight. Did very much enjoy Street Car Renaissance though (I think they were the only ones I did not fast forward through).

I have to say that the groups competing last season were a lot better than these, overall.

Does anyone know if this show is live like other reality music shows? They never say at any point or have LIVE in the corner of the screen or anything like that? And is it really only judges or is there ever any voting by the studio audience or public? I would think that could get skewed based on built-in fan bases that college groups would have over other type of performers.

Missed it last night due to wednesday night line-up on another network. Hope to catch a glimpse of it again at another airing.

^^I agree the previous season was stronger, but the groups this time around are very diverse and have very different styles.

What happened tonight? I missed the show.

Four groups performed number one hits: Filharmonic, 10, Street Corner Renaissance, and the Univ of Kentucky group. Filharmonic and SCR were in the bottom and SCR went home.

The other four groups will perform on the next show, which is Monday.

They should have them all do a classical number, too… just sayin’

Thanks for the update.

Finally got around to watching the Thursday show on Hulu. (Had to miss it for choir practice, ironically. )

I can’t argue with the results, although I thought all 4 sounded very strong. Personally, I prefer to listen to SCR than the Filharmonics, but oh well. Part of the problem for me is the song choices of the latter group, which haven’t appealed to me.

I don’t know how they divided them up, but it seems to me that Element is weaker than either of the bottom two in this group.

Regarding public voting: last season the public eventually got to vote. Don’t know what will happen this time, with things so compressed. I must say that I prefer having the judges decide, because they know what they are talking about and seem to be very fair.

How much time do the groups get to prepare for the sing off if they’re in the bottom. The performances seem so rehearsed. The back and forth between the groups are timed perfectly and the song chosen is obviously not a surprise. They have the parts worked out and everything.

I think that they actually have a week in between each performance. There have been references to it. In the earlier seasons they had a lengthy period where they were in LA for the earlier rounds, then they came back for the live shows. (I remember that one of the Aire’s basses had to leave because he was starting grad school, and it appeared that they couldn’t replace him.)

I’m assuming that with the sing-offs all the teams prepare in advance. I figured that they divide the song up into part a and part b, and the teams learn both and then are assigned if they have to battle. I don’t see how else they could do it.

According to a kid I’m friends with who was a Whiffenpoof (not the year they competed) there are a capella gurus who help them with the arranging and, of course, costumes.

I really like Home Free!

Overall, it feels like there are more groups that have “pop appeal”, compared to past years.

I want to like Filharmonics more… but they need other members to be more dynamic vocally, in addition to the (smaller) lead singer, who is really strong.

Just finally got around to watching episodes 2 & 3 from this week. Am having fun seeing some of the songs D2 did in her college a cappella group being done on Sing-Off. However, I will say that I much preferred the arrangement D’s group did to Chain of Fools than the one done by Ten.

I wish they had extra reels or something of cameras on the judges during the performances. I love watching their reactions when they show an occasional snip it. Have to say, I think I Ben Folds’ feedback the most.

Just posting preliminary thoughts in order to bump this thread.

Did anyone find it odd that the (only) girl in the VoicePlay had eyebrows the same bright red as her hair?

I think the right group went home tonight. Wednesday, two will go home. It’s getting harder to predict which two.

I love Home Free. Of all the groups, I want to hear them again.
