The Sing-Off!

Okay, fans, here is our very own thread.

I thought that the right group went home last night. Some interesting groups left: I’m looking forward to seeing how they develop.

I found it interesting that A) a lot more groups seemed to be trying to follow in the hallowed footsteps of the incomparable Pentatonix (just to let you know where I stand  ) by including percussion, and B) the collegiate groups seemed to be trying hard to include the entertainment value of the Dartmouth Aires.

I think Jewel is a nice addition to Ben and Shawn.

I agree, consolation, that the right team went home. I enjoy this show and I think that it has improved over the years. I liked the addition of an actual sing-off! I don’t have a favorite group yet but look forward to seeing all of them again. The addition of Jewel is a good one. Her musical knowledge is extensive.

I was hoping that Pentatonix might perform!

My D’s friend is in Home Free, so I am watching to see how they do. I thought they were very good last night.

I agree the right group went home. Their performance got a little sloppy in parts.

I’m just a sucker for these kinds of shows. I have zero musical talent myself but I always wanted to sing like Barbra Streisand. Maybe in my next life!

Thanks for starting this thread, Consolation. I don’t think I’ve seen this show before. I love the choreography almost as much as the singing. All the groups are so different, yet so entertaining.

Love it! Sometimes I am just amazed that there are no instruments. You would SWEAR there’s a band hiding somewhere :-).

Had to DVR it last night and am watching it now. Am glad it’s back! Thanks to you all who did not spoil it for me by mentioning who went home.

I love Shawn’s comment, “Country music is a white man’s R & B!”

toledo, if you’ve never seen the show before I suggest that you go to youtube and watch the performances of the Dartmouth Aires and Pentatonix from the last season it was broadcast. Particularly the Aires’ Queen medley, and Pentatonix’ Let’s Get It On.

[Sing Off 3 7 Dartmouth Aires - Queen Medley - YouTube](<a href=“Sing Off 3 7 Dartmouth Aires - Queen Medley - YouTube”>Sing Off 3 7 Dartmouth Aires - Queen Medley - YouTube)

[Sing-Off Episode 9 - Pentatonix - Let’s Get It On (Marvin Gaye) - YouTube](<a href=“Sing-Off Episode 9 - Pentatonix - Let's Get It On (Marvin Gaye) - YouTube”>Sing-Off Episode 9 - Pentatonix - Let's Get It On (Marvin Gaye) - YouTube)

I want to watch this, it sounds great! When and where is it on??

I think the University of Kentucky guys were fun. Also agree that the Princeton guys were the right group to go home. I really like Home Free. That’s cool that your D’s friend is in Home Free, musicmom.

movemetoo,
It’s an NBC show and it continues on Wednesday night this week, 8 p.m. EST. My understanding is that they are going to condense the whole airing of the competition so that the whole thing wraps up within two weeks. The first show was on last night for two hours and one group out of the 10 was eliminated.

I agree that the right group was sent home, and was surprised that they didn’t do a better job. I do object to this competition being posed as “the best a cappella groups in the country.” Not hardly. They are quite good, but NBC was clearly looking for a mix. College groups, a high school group, a street corner doo-wop group, let’s-put-all-backup-singers-together-and-see-how-they-do group, etc. People unfamiliar with a cappella shouldn’t get the impression that these really are “the best.”

Anyway, I think that Jewel is a very good addition, even though I liked Sarah Bareilles last year. Jewel was giving really specific constructive criticism, just like Ben Folds does.

Found this show by accident last night doing some channel surfing. We were pleasantly surprised by the variety of performances. It did seem strange compared to so many reality music shows that group experiences of being together singing varied so much. The age ranges also seemed interesting but somehow added a level of “disadvantage” to some over others.

Anyhow, will probably watch again if it doesn’t conflict with something else on that catches our eye more.

Liked the Kentucky group and the country group from last night’s performances the best.

Also, always loved Jewel but she was outstanding as a judge compared to all these shows where they never basically say anything of value but give banal comments. She was so precise with her comments that it seemed she was enjoying her role and giving constructive feedback to the performers. Loved her!

I found her husband charming on Dancing with the Stars a couple of seasons back. They are just a cute looking and adorable couple based on their TV personalities.

Does anyone know how they are going to thin the field this year since it’s a limited run? I thought they would send more than 1 group home last night. I’m also wondering if there is going to be a time when their fates will be turned over to the viewers.

As I mentioned on The Voice thread, 2 of the AcoUstiKats are from my hometown and there has been a big buzz about the group here. Based on local news coverage and posts on Facebook, I have a feeling they do well. At some point they will be performing a mash up of Call Me Maybe and Payphone.

Payphone has been that song that I can’t keep out of my head for the last couple of weeks! I also thought it would be an awesome song to do a cappella after I heard it a few times. Ever since D2 was in an a cappella group in college, I tend to listen to songs and judge them as to whether they are a cappella ‘worthy’ or not!

This is the schedule:

Mon. 12/9 - 8 p.m. EST - season premiere
Wed. 12/11 - 8 p.m. EST
Thu. 12/12 - 8 p.m. EST
Mon. 12/16 - 10 p.m. EST - special time (after “The Voice”)
Wed. 12/18 - 8 p.m. EST
Thu. 12/19 - 8 p.m. EST
Mon. 12/23 - 8 p.m. EST - season finale

I’m glad that NBC decided to resurrect the show and it’s nice to have it here for just a few weeks during the holiday season.

Finally watched the first show on DVR late yesterday. I’m so glad it’s back and look forward to this thread. I was really not familiar with a capella until I went to a program for parents at D’s college orientation a few years back. It wasn’t long after that the first Sing Off started, and I’ve been delighted with it ever since.

Really enjoyed the show which I also found by accident (husband was watching the headless Horseman in the other room - have not been able to get into that at all) - thanks for posting the schedule as I would not have been looking for it to be on tonight.

Absolutely loved the group that performed the Robin Thicke song, they were so much fun to watch. (was that the U of Kentucky group?)

Agree the right ones went home. They could have sent the other group in the bottom 2 home as well as far as I was concerned.

Agree with all the positive comments about Jewel. I enjoy watching this group of judges during the performances - they seem so entranced by it all.

Yes, swimcatsmom, that was the U KY group. The other group was lacking in the pure a capella realm, since they seemed to be concentrating on being a entertainment act with hot chicks dancing. Being in the bottom two right off the bat may cause them to rethink. I don’t know about anyone else, but the Filipino guys were so frenetic that although I liked them a lot it was difficult to just listen to the singing!

Jewel is a very good judge. I like the fact that she is giving very specific comments. (I also agree that she and her H the rodeo champ seem like a very nice couple. )

Watching right now…

I can’t believe Nick Lachey callled the coaching mom of the AcoUstiKats a cougar!

Ben Folds - he’s such a nerd, and I mean that in a good way. :)
