I made about $150 on my Tiffany trade and it’s taking off today. It appears that there are a lot of people out there buying expensive jewelry. I asked my wife it she’d like some jewelry and she really didn’t give me an answer. She did bring some back from Singapore but I think that they were gifts to her. She also brought back clothes for our daughter which seemed to make her happy (my wife) because they fit our daughter well.

[Wedding Research Debunks Common Views On Engagement Rings](<a href=“Wedding Research Debunks Common Views On Engagement Rings | HuffPost Life”>Wedding Research Debunks Common Views On Engagement Rings | HuffPost Life)

D2 got engaged on Monday. She is very happy with her ring! :)

I never got the point of an engagement ring in the first place, and I’d rather not my SO give me one because it’s like a pre-wedding ring that costs more than the wedding ring, and I don’t like jewelry anyway. I don’t know if his gf shares my sentiments, however.

Have to report, three weeks after this thread got me thinking about offering my diamond (small and needs to be reset but very good karma), son called last night to say the wedding will be next summer. :)

All the young women today have rings that look alike. The diamond may be bigger or smaller, but all these rings look just the same. (Kind of like wedding gowns.) Where’s originality? Why is everything related to weddings so cookie-cutter today?

PS 1moremom, my comment has nothing to do with your post. Congratulations to your son! (And you.)

It seems that the majority of the rings I’ve seen lately are the cushion cuts nestled into a ring of smaller diamonds - halo I believe it is called. I blame the Bachelor/Bachelorette shows.

I’m happy for you, 1moremom! We may have a summer 2014 wedding to freak out over, as well. DS and GF are visiting next month, so I hope to hear more details.

Yes, while we’ve been looking the rings have seriously all started to look the same. Hell, it’s even made me question whether or not a “real” engagement ring can be sapphire and not diamond like what I want. Objectively, I know it can be whatever I please but the diamond pressure is immense. I just never realized it before.

I think that ring designs have always followed trends. When I was in college a popular cut was the marquis. I never see that now. I opted for a pear shaped because I wanted to be different…Ha! ;)

I think D2 is looking at Fall 2014 for her wedding. We look at the first reception venue on Friday! The places she was interested in are all booked already for summer 2014.

romanigypsyeyes…a sapphire was “good enough” for Princess Di and now Princess Kate! ;)

Oh, see, I see it completely differently. “In my day” you got an oval or a round cut with no side stones - a sapphire or emerald was unheard of. Your bridesmaids wore matching gowns, and they were long / to the floor. You served beef if you were well-to-do and chicken if you were cutting corners. The cake was always white / yellow cake and done in white frosting. The invitations all looked a certain way – formal calligraphy on white or cream paper. Nowadays I think it’s a lot LESS cookie cutter. People do all different types of rings, they have all different types of attendants, they pick their own dresses and don’t have to be matchy-matchy, there is a lot more creativity in terms of food, and it’s no longer just white or yellow cake - you can have all flavors and all decorations.

Romani, you know I’m a jewelry snob and I say, get the sapphire! I love sapphires. Gorgeous stones.

Get what you want. If you want a topaz, get a topaz. I have a friend who has an engagement ring made from a stone she and her now husband found on a vacation. I don’t even think it’s a “stone,” but it’s hers/theirs. What the heck.

Get what you want! Express yourself.

1more and NM, congratulations!

When I was in college and engaged for the first time my ring was pear shaped. For my second engagement (the one that “took”!) I opted for marquis in order to be different. :)

Science has proven otherwise:

[Size does matter](http://news.sciencemag.org/sciencenow/2013/04/the-final-word-on-*****-size.html)

I know my D said that when they went shopping for her ring (that she has not actually gotten yet
), the person assisting them really tried to talk her out of yellow gold because “nobody gets yellow gold these days”…which, to her was just ridiculous! How silly and shallow of that woman to think she’d want something only because it seemed “popular”!!

She had a pretty definite idea of what she wanted and found it and I cannot wait to see it “in person” and on her finger! We found a site that has pictures online and even a kind of creepy animated “video” of a hand wearing the ring so you can see it from all angles. I will be glad to see the real thing!
Her BF ordered it back in March and has had it for a while now. I am actually really proud of him for waiting until all his “plans” could be carried out to surprise her and make it a very special day. I love him for that. :)

Please excuse all the smileys and exclamation marks. Can you tell I am happy for my DD?

Congrats all.

Don’t worry all, I’m about as stubborn and thick headed as they come. I’ll get what I want, trends be damned.

Besides, like I told my partner, I can always exchange the ring, can’t exchange the proposal (but no pressure of course)
:p

I feel bad for guys these days with all kinds of elaborate and romantic proposals all over youtube and such. I don’t know exactly what is planned, but I do know that DD’s boyfriend is developing back-up plans if the weather is not good. But the weather IS supposed to be fantastic on THE day, so we will see…

I agree, churchmusicmom! Poor guys - trying to live up to extravagant engagement/wedding expectations created by overly-materialistic (and solipsistic) couples and egged-on by merchants with dollar signs in their eyes.

In my day… everyone I knew got engaged in bed ;)

I would definitely not say no to a huge emerald cut diamond in white gold or platinum, but not as an engagement ring. I have no intention of getting married again. This talk reminds me of the “Sex and the City” episode when Carrie found the ring Aidan had picked out and hated it. She questioned how she could pick a guy who could pick such a ring. By the time he gave it to, one of the friends had intervened and the ring had been exchanged to one more of her liking.

Geez, my son (formerly known as the worm) has shopped with his g/f. He has been to her parents’ home several times. Hard to imagine him having to come up with some fabulous romantic “occasion”. I think they are waiting for him to graduate, and goodness knows how long that will take. I admit I don’t know what ‘halo’ style is, will need to explore that.

NM, my mom had the marquis. Jewelers tell me not to expect much on trying to do an exchange. I wish my mom had tried to be original.
