Again, I agree emily. Even if Djokovic is fit, he will need time to adjust to his new technique. It is unlikely he will pose a threat until later this year. I think del Potro in the QF and Alexander Zverev in the semis present more of a challenge to Federer.
I don’t like to speculate too much on later round matches because draws never pan out as we think they will on paper. There are always shockers - especially at AO.
Just watched Angie v Pome. Pome played really well and still lost 3-6, 1-6. So nice to see Angie playing so well after the horror that was 2017.
There are some hideous clothing being worn.
Most of the players arent wearing the kits for AO yet, but there are some hideous ones to come. I’ve seen pictures.
Aisics was by far the worst the last few weeks. Awful shape and Ill fitting on everyone who had to wear it. They’ll be wearing a tight fitted dress in a light greenish color (that’s what it seems to looks like in pictures) with no pattern.
Wonder if Simona Halep found something to wear. Saw an article about her sponsorship with Adidas ending, so no clothing sponsor for her?
Not as of a yesterday that I know of. On one of my podcasts they said she told Adidas that she was leaving them to look for a better deal with a sponsor then they were willing to offer, but didn’t get any offers. She said, it’s all good anyway and she was letting her management handle it.
Not the best match but YaY Angie for first title since 2016 USO!
Bummed JMdP lost but still great way to start the year for him.
In honor of start of AO. I expect we will all know it, once again, by heart, by end of the fortnight.
So many good first round matches today - especially on the women’s side. Belinda-Venus, Stosur-Puig (in battle of flops,) Domi-Kanepi and Flipkins-Riske. All flips of the coin, IMO.
On the men’s: Shapovalov (young Canadian) v Tsitsipas (the young Greek,) and Anderson v Edmond. These are really the only two that, IMO, will be competitive.
What a twit. Won’t be missed.
“Bernard Tomic has bowed out of the Australian Open ahead of the start of the tournament proper, before opening fire at the media in a bizarre post-match interview.
The 25-year-old Gold Coast native fell just short of qualification for the year’s first major, losing 6-1, 6-7(5-7), 6-4 to Italian Lorenzo Sonego, ranked 218.
Tomic will miss his first grand slam tournament in seven years and his ranking will dip even lower than 142, where he currently sits.
Asked whether this represented a career crossroads for him, Tomic responded sarcastically to journalists.
“I just count money, that’s all I do. I count my millions,” he said.”
Nike pepto bismol pink on guys is oh so horrid (and blinding!)
American women 0-6 so far and we are only 4 hours in.
Yikes!
Yikes- but Bencic! I’m glad she won!
0-7 now. Plus, Isner lost on the men’s side.
I only had CoConut going through on my draw but I’m happy to make the sacrifice.
KAndy losing to Edmond really messed up my men’s draw. I had him going to at least the qrtrs.
0-8.
@emilybee, you don’t like any American players? Do you pull for them to lose?
I figured Bencic might win after the way she played at the Holman Cup. I kind of hope Kerber goes the distance.
Sorry to see Jack Sock and Venus lose. JS is entertaining and seems like a good kid (although I’m surprised at his ranking).
Sock’s ranking has benefited from all the injuries on the men’s side. Djokovic, Murray, Nishikori, Raonic, etc…He would still be ranked among the top 15, but not among the top 10 if it weren’t for all those injuries. Tomorrow will be an interesting day. Djokovic and Federer both have relatively tough first round opponents.
You’re right! I’m anxious to see how Djokovic plays. It seems he’s been gone forever.
CoCo is such a brat, but for some reason she amuses rather than irritates me. She’s just herself, love her or hate her.
