The Tennis Thread

I really hate watching Sharapova. ESPN was showing her the other night (when there were a few Americans playing in very close matches, @emilybee, by the way). She takes so long between points, countless dry run service tosses, prissing around, and that infernal shrieking. Go, Angie!!

@Tiredofsnow, ESPN/TC will show Martha no matter who else is playing. Ditto, for Roger and Rafa.

I’ve been watching most of the matches on WatchESPN the last few days, because I find the split screen they’ve been doing so much this tourney, very, very annoying. The comms are much better too. They don’t spend any time talking about themselves or talking about everything else but the match.

Done in by a toenail.

I need to go cleanse my brain with some men’s tennis.

i was very impressed by Davis. Such a bummer she didn’t win.

On a side note…anyone follow doubles? There was an amazing match earlier (Paes/Raja vs. Murray/Soares)…came down to the third set tiebreak too.

Heartbroken for Herbert/Mahut though… up 5-1 in the third set tiebreak and lost it all :frowning:

Interesting that Zverev seems to struggle more against the guys his age.

@hope469, shocker of a result for Frenchies. I don’t watch dubs until second week - after most of my favs have crashed out of singles draw.

Helpful hint: don’t put money on Aussie women or SZrevev to make into into 2nd week.

Shame Lucie had KaPlisk in 3rd rd. Both were playing fantastic tennis. Only one break in whole match and it was when Lucie served to stay in match at 5-6.

Angie came to snatch some wigs.

So Rogi now has Fuscovic and either Walking Bye or The Fog to get to semi’s. Tough draw morphed into cake draw.

@emilybee no doubt Mahut/P2H been struggling at Slams recently…opponents yesterday were too aggressive, too powerful, and they definitely weren’t in gear.

Yay for Kerber, and good to Roger for getting through Gasquet…wonder why he got RLA night session twice in a row?

^ Because he is the GOAT and Laver was in the house. He’s not going to go sit in MCA to watch a match.

NickK, proving once again he’s his own worst enemy. And Dimi, raising his level when it mattered.

Thanks to Marin for preventing another Rafa v PCB beat down.

Svitty & Sunshine NID.

And Anett done in by choking once again. Then that net cord on penultimate point rubbing salt into her wounds. Good on Carla for staying the course.

I am exhausted at work again today. I watched the Kerber vs Hsieh match which was exhausting. Hsieh was getting such crazy angles! I left the TV on and kept waking up and watching. I watched the end of the Federer match (the Hungarian was better than I expected), and the end of the Djokovic match (is Chung the real deal or was Djokovic out of gas?), I didn’t realize there was another woman’s match until I got up to go to work and checked the scores (I didn’t see any of the Halep/Osaki match so wanted to check who won) and it was still going! (6am PST!). I can’t believe the run of Sandgren. They showed a picture of him from last year. I am glad he ditched the handlebar mustache and ponytail.

I am a Djokovic fan, but I am really happy for Chung. He played great tennis. He reminds me of a young Djokovic actually. Like Djokovic said after the match, he played against a wall. Whatever Djokovic threw at him, Chung returned with greater power and ferocity. Great angles, excellent shot selection, etc…He may have played the match of his life, but he played just as well against Zverev two days earlier. I think he could be on a roll, which does not bode well for future opponents. Djokovic played well, and he had no answer. Djokovic’ high number of unforced errors were not a result of poor play, but rather of being outplayed. The fact that Chung is such a modest and likable man found me cheering for him. I hope this is the start of a long and very successful career for him.

Brisbane winner curse continues. AussieElise now 15-0 Down Under.

Dimi just awful. No excuse for his poor performance. Props to Edmond.

Divadal 873-0 when not injured.

QuarterfinalCarla in the house, again. 0-5.

Yikes.

Angie in post match interview: "I will go enjoy my day off now.”

^:)^ ^:)^

Good riddance to bad rubbish.

It was strange for me to be so emotionally invested in a tennis match, where I wasn’t rooting for a player to win. I was glad Sandgren lost. It will be interesting to see how things play out for him. Time will tell.

^Not racking up endorsements, that’s for sure. Quite telling that he got not a single patch endorsement when he made the qtrs.

I’m very happy he was outed. The NYT reporter who tweeted glowingly about him after, iirc, his match with Stan, was called out by a number of people to “do some research.” Then the floodgates opened.

For people who follow tennis closely, like I do, this was well known. How reporters who cover tennis did not or more likely chose to ignore, I find shocking. You know it’s bad though when ESPN couldn’t avoid it any longer.

He’s not the only one either. During the NFL kneeling stuff, Harrison blocked James Blake, saying he only wants, “Patriots” as followers, after Blake supported the players right to do so.

Loved Serena’s tweet before the match started.

First time in forever I liked all 4 semi-finalists so still happy with the results - even though I picked Angie to win it all.
What a drama filled semi - WD to both ladies. Angie looked so knackered those last few games, But a great start for her - especially after the horror of 2017. Simona the mentally tougher in this match. She’s now saved match points in two matches.

Except for the wobble at end of second - Sunshine solid as a rock wall. But got it together to win and save going to a third.

I want both Simona and Sunshine to win on Saturday so will just sit back and enjoy. Hopefully, it’ll be a match worthy of a GS final.

And finally there will be no slamless #1!
