I too am in the anyone but Djokovic camp. Rooting for serena as well
I’m pulling for IW winners JMDP and Naomi.
Oh my what a tantrum in the ladies final. Really overshadowing Osaka’s great play.
The umpire really ruined it.
Very unfortunate how this all played out. This may have very well gone to three sets.
Very emotional . Congratulations to the winner!
Very emotional. Serena had much more on the line in this battle than a win. I believe that is what she was fighting for.
Very sad to see Osaka be almost apologetic about the win. I feel the umpire also took her ability to win fully on her own away from her.
That whole awards ceremony was ALL KINDS of awkward across the board.
I disagree that the umpire ruined it. Serena lashed out and accused him of being a thief. Very unsportsmanlike imho.
I’m surprised that twitter is calling her a “class act” for trying to give Naomi the credit for the win. That’s the bare minimum of what she should have done.
I really dislike the victim attitude.
I am not as familiar with the prevalence of coaching etc but the rules are the rules. Curious on @emilybee opinion since she knows way more about tennis.
Wow, just wow, way to let umpiring ruin a final. The head guy should’ve overruled the umpire on the final violation. Absolutely no winners in this match, but one huge loser - the US Open itself, due to a self-inflicted wound.
And lest we forget, just a few days ago at the US Open an actual chair umpire got down out of his chair and gave long, heartfelt, detailed coaching to one of the players mid match. And was Kyrgios penalized? No. Was the umpire fired or sanctioned? No.
The umpire ruined it?!?!?
First, Patrick admitted to the coaching. Even if the player doesn’t see it or hear it they get the warning. That is the rule. Umpire was corrrect in issuing the warning.
Then she smashed her racquet. That is racquet abuse. Again umpire correct in issuing 2nd warning. Point penalty.
Then she ranted and raved at the umpire calling him a liar and a cheat, saying he wouild never work a match of hers again and demanding an apology. That is verbal abuse under the rules. 3rd warning. Game penalty.
She has a habit of doing this at the USO when she is losing a final. 09, ‘11 and now ‘18.
The crowd was horrid. And that “please don’t boo we’ll get through this,” instead of telling the crowd to knock off the booing and that Naomi deserved this championship. Serena was just classless.
How Naomi was able to keep her composure and serve it out shows what a worthy champion she is. Shame Serena and the crowd had to ruin this moment for her.
The only one owed an apology is Naomi from Serena.
+1 to everything emilybee said!
Agree with @emilybee and well said
Serena was outplayed, that was quite evident. Now I don’t think she owes Osaka anything, she asked the crowd to stop booing. What do they have rules if they aren’t going to apply them evenly? If all the coaches do it, why was she penalized? Mind you she wasn’t even looking at him.
I’ve been at thousands of matches over the last 40 years and seen coaching called dozens of times. Despite what the comms said, it isn’t that rare of an occurrence. I bet it was called more than a handful of times just in this tourney.
It doesn’t matter if the player hears it or sees it. If it’s called the player gets the warning. The player is responsible for their coaches actions during their match.
The reason a lot of times it’s not called is simply because the umpire doesn’t see it.
This is all on Serena not the ump. I can’t help but think if she was intentionally playing it up for footage and viewership for her reality tv show. It was too over the top. In general, I’ve been a Serena fan in the past but she’s lost some of my respect.
BTW, why all the Djokovic haters? I’d be happy if either he or Del Potro won.
Why the shock over Serena’s on-court frustration ?
There have been many men who have misbehaved on the tennis court. Who have broken racquets, yelled, pouted, screamed at umpires, The f-word has been said to umpires by legendary players – and those tantrums did not make headlines.
I think this hysteria is all about Serena being black, being tough, and being female.
I don’t think there is hysteria. Her fans at the stadium seemed to stay on her side (given that they booed Osaka). I don’t think the behavior Williams exhibited is appropriate for women or men or for people of any race or ethnicity. And while I generally think of WIlliams as tough, this behavior didn’t come across that way.
I’m confused. What hysteria?
“There have been many men who have misbehaved on the tennis court. Who have broken racquets, yelled, pouted, screamed at umpires, The f-word has been said to umpires by legendary players – and those tantrums did not make headlines.”
And they get warned plenty of times. What they don’t do is get two more warnings after that to get a game penalty.
Here is same umpire giving Djoker a warning. https://youtu.be/NJm_oYcDMkM
Also, the rule regarding verbal abuse clearly states ‘verbal abuse is (…) any statement about an official (…) that implies dishonesty’. In this instance “thief” definitely fits that definition.
And there is no way Serena doesn’t know the rules.
“I think this hysteria is all about Serena being black, being tough, and being female.”
Absolutely:
"“I’m here fighting for women’s rights and for women’s equality and for all kinds of stuff. "
As for men behaving badly and not making the news - here a just a few samples.
