The Tennis Thread

@Alexandre, I didn’t remember the year she wore it - just the kit. So I did the google.

Fritz and Tiafoe had big wins and McDonald really battled.

Nice to see a men’s match where both had one-handed backhands. Fed said afterwards that it was like playing a mirror. The difference, of course, was the unforced errors by the underdog Evans. Johnnie Mac admitted a major point ended because of a choke job.

Nadal is fun to watch but what’s with his rather peculiar routine regarding a wedgie? He’s done this ever since he arrived on the scene while wearing capris. Tailored clothing should not necessitate this. Superstitions and routines are one thing but doing it in front of the public after every single point…

Rafa’s tighty whities are too tight. And he has OCD.

He also wears tennys that are a size smaller than his foot.

Rafa’s rituals are even more obvious when you watch him live. He does his shoulders too. They used to bother me, but I really think he can’t help it.

He lines up his water bottles just so near his seat. They have to be set a particular way. Yes OCD.

And god forbid anyone/anything kicks them over.

“Just a sample of Nadal’s unusual rituals:

  • He must have a cold shower 45 minutes before a match.
  • He must carry one racquet on to the court.
  • He must have wrapped his own white grip on his racquets in the locker room.
  • His bag must be placed next to his chair, on a towel, never on the chair.
  • He must towel down between every point. It can be ace or double fault — he must towel down as if he is covered in sweat.
  • He must pick at his underpants.
  • He must drink from two water bottles at changeovers. One bottle has cold water, one is warm.
  • He must never rise from his seat before his opponent.”

What a barn burner between Kei and Ivo. Calling MOTD and it was first up.

Nadal also smells his fingers for the whole world to see. It works for him.

Remember McEnroe not stepping on the service line after games? “Step on a crack…”

@emilybee Nice to see a serve and volley player for a change.

Excited to watch the Bryan brothers. Bob is playing with a fake hip. Some are urging Murray to get one like it.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed the American commentators don’t hype Amanda so much that I end up hating her.

Well, both my draws are a bloody mess and I wasn’t doing well before last night.

At least Petra won. And yay for Pavs - who I had going out in 1st or 2nd rd.

Collins from UVA looked like a number one seed. Where has she been?

She had a good run last spring in Miami. Made the semi’s, iirc. Then she did absolutely nothing until this week.

Sad that Fed is out, but Tsipitipas is fun to watch. Nadal looks good. I was very surprised that Collins looked so good against Kerber. She beat Goerges, who had been playing great, first round. Kvitova looked very good I will try to wake up in the middle of the night to watch Serena vs Halep.

Very sad Fed is out but am excited about several young Americans that have made it this far.

Woke up in the middle of the night to watch Serena vs Halep. It was great tennis.

Will any of the remaining women beat Serena? Osaka can and it would be nice to see a re-match without the drama of the US Open final. After seeing Collins play, I think she could put up a fight against Serena also.

Serena’s next opponent, Pliskova, has beaten her in the USO in 2016. Kvitova has the power game to beat Serena as well. Svitolina as well. In fact, Osaka, Pliskova, Kvitova and Svitolina are 4-0 against Serena if you look at each of their last matches against her. This is a wide tournament on the women’s and the men’s side.

I have no idea anymore as far as the women’s draw goes, but I doubt anyone left I’m still pulling for wins.

Happy for lovelyLucas. Just wish it wasn’t against another of my outer court guys. But a good result again after a few years in the wilderness. Love that he hired Amélie, too.
