The Texas Solution to School Shooters

"Perry added, though, that in a candid moment, Cuomo likely envies Texas’ growing economy. Perry said: “he’d dearly love to be able to stand up and say ‘we did this in New York,’ but he can’t.”

"Perry added, though, that in a candid moment, Cuomo likely envies Texas’ growing economy. Perry said: “he’d dearly love to be able to stand up and say ‘we did this in New York,’ but he can’t.”

Is there a link to where Andrew actually said this or does this go under the category of “musing?”

Argbargy, you obviously did not watch the interview or you would not have asked that ignorant question (969). RM advocated for nothing. She did an on-site interview of the parents of two sons, one murdered, another who was at the school during the massacre. Inconveniently for some, they have decided to speak out. It clearly was very difficult for them. They are very courageous people.

I don’t know what you’re referring to as “weapons of war”, but such weapons aren’t available to the general public seeing as how weapons of war are fully automatic assault rifles. An AR15 is not a weapon of war, and there’s no point in pretending it is when this is an undeniable fact.

I know a lot of people who work in the Newtown and surrounding school districts. There is very little info about Adam Lanza. Like virtually none. He was quiet. He caused very little trouble. Yes, he had seen counselors and psychologists and educators in the area, but there is noone who can come up with any reason or rationale even an inkling as to why he would do this, and he was one of the last people on anyone’s list to do so. Really, the only risk factor he had was that he was familiar and comfortable with those weapons and had acces to them. The media has been going through contortions trying to find someone, anyone that could come up with anything. He was quiet, shied away from any interaciton and just wanted to be left alone. He was capable of driving a car, going to college, doing decently in school, self care, shopping, but avoided doing anything as much as possible. So all of this focus on mental health… I don’t know.

Funny, about NY not wanting other states’ guns here. New Yorker go in droves up to CT, in the Newtown area to target shoot. Those ranges are booked full well in advance.

We are texas, a land of musers and self congratulators!

Really? You don’t think there was anything unusual with the shooter’s mental state? It was the access to guns that caused the massacre?

Someone recently posted that there are currently 1 million assault weapons owned in the state of NY alone. Those gun owners haven’t gunned down school children simply because they have access to guns. Human beings do not slaughter school children unless there is something mentally wrong with them.

Just you wait, those guns are planning their attack as we speak.

[The Truth About Assault Weapons](http://www.assaultweapon.info/) this one is not too bad.

Also someone already posted this earlier, it is a good explanation for those of you what the difference between assault rifle/assault weapon and a sporting rifle is. Although when I wiki the separate terms, I can’t get anyone to agree on them consistently. All that really matters is that you should know the difference between semi-automatic and automatic.

It might be a good idea to broaden your internet reading. The DOJ was not caught doing any such thing; and the president has not said that he plans to do anything unconstitutional. Heller affirmed the constitutional right to keep and bear arms, but also alluded to areas where restrictions may be constitutional.

All constitutional rights have parameters. We have a first amendment right to free speech, but cannot yell fire in a crowded theater. We have a right to our property, but we still have zoning laws.

There is no rational reason to think that the 2nd Amendment and only the 2nd Amendment has no implicit restrictions. Yet that is what the NRA appears to argue.

Yes, and the fact that he was very comfortable with using them.

What problem are we solving here?

Our most recent evil nutcase used his Mom’s guns, right? How would your strict gun laws have kept her from purchasing her guns?

I don’t see ANY solution to the most recent scenario other than a good guy intercepting the bad guy on his way to kill the innocents.

The Truth About Assault Weapons
Good Link. I doubt many of the Anti-gun people will read it through.

In the event someone in the mental state that s/he is thinking about mowing down people with an assault weapon, it’s an added impediment, opportunity to catch him, if he does not have one handy. He apparently tried to buy his own, but was turned down or the waiting period turned him off. The sales person did not seem to think he was someone to report as questionable in buying such a weapon.

The young man had autism. That is not classified as a mental illness. It is a disability. He did not have any outward signs of ever possibly harming others.

The NY law is banning any new weapns that have removable multiple shot magazines, I beleve, as well as addressing the mental illness issue. I don’t think even that law being in effect wouldhave prevented what happened.

Millions of Americans have guns and are “comfortable with using them”, and yet they aren’t initiating mass shootings. Didn’t take long to disprove your insane myth.

Clarification- they havent admitted it.

“When the President does it, that means it is not illegal.”

Can we get a list of what proposed measures that people think would have prevented Newtown? Because so far I see 0.

Bypassing congress to force feed unconstitutional laws IS unconstitutional.

I don’t think there is one single person in the country who thinks they have “measures that would have prevented Newtown”.

Newtown, by force of its sheer horror has gotten the conversation going, however. And the fact that we, as a nation and as a CC family, are asking questions of ourselves and of each other is a great start.

The fact that this thread has gone on as long as it has, in relative politeness, without being shut down is fantastic.

I have read every post on this thread, and have appreciated the questions and opinions, especially those I don’t agree with. I have learned a few things. I would hope that everyone who has been reading and commenting would say the same thing. Not that opinions have changed, but that we have learned from each other that there are different ways of looking at the issue.

We all tend to be blinded by the tiny world of the people we know. We need to look beyond our own beliefs on these big issues.

Here is a helpful glossary

semi-automatic: full automatic
high-capacity: 6

“I don’t see ANY solution to the most recent scenario other than a good guy intercepting the bad guy on his way to kill the innocents.”

AllThis - I don’t intend to pick on you. This thread is has a thousand posts, and it’s unlikely you’ve read them all … many of which address your statement. Allow me to summarize:

(1) Bad guys commit their acts in public areas;
(2) Mass murders are not identified prior to beginning their assaults;
(3) When armed “good guys” are present, mass murders aren’t stopped by them.

Virtually all mass-murderers are mentally unbalanced, and will not be dissuaded by an armed public. This is confirmed by the Aurora episode, the Columbine episode, the Ft. Hood episode, etc. etc. etc. ad nauseum.

What all this leaves us with is one constant … mass murders are always committed by guns in public areas, and they occur due the inability of the police/public to identify them before carnage begins.

This by itself is not an argument for gun control. But is an argument against the notion that “bad guys” are easily identified.
