The third letter of recommendation.

Hey guys,
We know of the two academic letters of recommendation that I believe are required of all law school applicants. But also there is the third, optional, non-academic letter of recommendation. I would like to know more about this third letter.

For instance, can an applicant supply this third letter of recommendation without being prompted to do so? Or must the applicant be asked for a third non-academic letter in order to be allowed to submit one?

I’ve also heard that this third letter is catered around people who are out of college and working. Must this third letter be from someone of the employer sort? Or can it be a non-academic teacher such as a music teacher? (because that is who I am thinking of using)

Thank you

For most you need two. Nevertheless, the third optional can be sent – law schools generally accept them. As you note, it is often used by those with some work experience to get a rec from an employer but it can come from anyone (e.g., do you know an alumnus of the law school you are applying to?). At the same time don’t start believing that it really makes much difference in the admission decision whether you send a third optional letter.

Ok, thank you
